Games Workshop dropped a little bit of a surprise over the Christmas break. A new miniature for the Chapter Master of the Dark Angels, Azrael, popped up. He has now crossed the Rubicon Primaris and will be leading the Dark Angels in Warhammer 40,000 very soon.

With Abaddon and Vashtorr planning to conquer the Imperium, the Dark Angels are right at the forefront of their onslaught. Azrael is back to lead the way with the Sword Of Secrets and his Master-Crafted Combi-Plasma, The Lion's Wrath. I like that they have retained much of the original look and feel of the older Azrael miniature here, especially in the pose. It feels like a natural evolution of the miniature.

The miniature comes with a few different options for you to consider. You can have him helmeted or unhelmeted as you see fit and that also means that his companion, the Watcher In The Dark, can either carry the Lion Helm into battle or be the bearer of his scabbard instead.

I think I'd go for the helmeted version of the miniature but I think that the Watcher In The Dark looks better holding the helmet. So, it's a bit "oooh errr" for me! Otherwise, I think the miniature is looking great and there will be some very happy Dark Angels fans out there I don't doubt.

This does support the ongoing rumours that we're going to be seeing Dark Angels in the 10th Edition boxed set for Warhammer 40,000 going up against something Chaos-focused. Either that or we get some special boxed set which focuses on a couple of the new miniatures (like Vashtorr and Azrael) as we've seen in the past.

Could that also mean that we see the return of another Primarch in the form of Lion'El Johnson? It would certainly make sense to see him awaken from his slumber to deal with the coming threat.

Are you tempted by the new version of Azrael?
