Check Out The Epic Crystal Brush 2017 Winners!
March 28, 2017 by brennon
Crystal Brush 2017 was a fantastic event once again showcasing some of the best painting out there in the industry right now. If you haven't checked out the winners yet then we've collected together the top three starting off with First Place and Best In Show, Space Wolf.
This amazing original piece by Sergio Calvo Rubio is utterly amazing and shows off so many amazing techniques. The work across the armour is fantastic, giving it a realistic sheen but also drawing on the artwork that inspired it by Paul Bonner.
I always like seeing people paint up wolves and fur, and the attention to detail that's gone into blending together the variations in the fur here is amazing. You get a real sense that the two pieces are mirroring each other as if both the Space Marine and the Wolf are bonded in their purpose simply by the posing of the overall entry.
It truly is rather fantastic and it's nice to see the artwork of Paul Bonner continuing to inspire painters. I'm still looking at all the little details on show here including the snow that has been sprinkled over the models strategically to plant them within the setting.
The Tribute
Second place went to Michal Pisarski who painted up this amazing scene showing a Vampire Lord pledging his allegiance to Nagash in the world of Warhammer Fantasy.
Again, an amazing piece with a real sense of scale to it. You can feel the scene looming over the Vampire as he pledges his sword to the Lord of Undeath and it's a decidedly imposing diorama.
Seeing Nagash like this also adds to his villainy and I think this is possibly one of the best representations of him out there right now. He looks like the dangerous God-like figure of the background. You can get a closer look at The Tribute over on the Crystal Brush Awards Page.
Oz
Third place, with an utterly amazing piece, we also have Oz by Francesco Farabi showing Dorothy in a strange world of mysticism and whimsy alongside her strange friends on the road to the Emerald City.
I really like the reimagining of the different characters to give them this creepier vibe, almost like they've been Malifaux'd. It's a great piece, packed with charming little nods including the Tin Man's inner workings and the fact that Dorothy is looking after the mighty lion rather than the other way around.
If folks are familiar with the style of American McGee's Alice then you'll see a similar style brought to life here. As with The Tribute you can see more of Oz over on the Crystal Brush gallery.
What do you think of these three fantastic pieces?

Wow…..amazing work
Oz is my favourite, genuinely beautiful. where are those models from, tell me there not scratch built? imaginative and full of emotion. the base and contrast in the colour palette is just top draw stuff.
the space wolf is extraordinary
I’ve got some bad news for you… scratch built.
Now, it is probable that a sculptor of that caliber cast his originals in resin rather than painting them- which might mean that he intends to sell them later (this has been true of several of the past Crystal Brush winners- but not all of them).
We have great artists and painters here on this site and in WAYPN, and then there is this level
The first and third ones I really love. The second one I just don’t like as much personally, but the painting is done great.
They were amazing to see in public and the obvious choices. Amazing work!
Crazy what people can do.
Absolutely amazing work all three. I have to agree the fur on the wolf is brilliant it was one of the first things that drew me when I was looking at them a couple of days ago.
I feel like a lot could be learned from these three entries in terms of painting. But how the heck they got to that level and what black magic is involved is beyond me.
they are stunning the wolf pelt could do with a wash & the Nagash?/necromancer looks foreboding.
this is dedication guys.
Stunning. Simply stunning. I could tell myself that I’d be able to approach this level if I cried tears of blood every day over miniatures for a year or two, but I dare not make any predictions… I would fall a victim of the Dunning-Kruger effect. Plus, I don’t have that kind of time.
While Golden Demons may be easier to acquire (although by no means easy) in certain countries, this goes largely above and beyond. I haven’t seen that sort of thing since the days of the Ravage Mix Open, outside of historical display painters shows.
Amazing stuff, truly amazing. I was just utterly fascinated by all the pieces, with Oz being my overall favourite. Incredible. 🙂
I love the paint work on the Space Wolf’s shield, and Nagash’s throne is also a great creation.
I love the wolf itself….so realistic looking. Oz is amazing as well and so is the lighting on Nagash’s armour. Amazing stuff!
