Crystal Brush 2017 was a fantastic event once again showcasing some of the best painting out there in the industry right now. If you haven't checked out the winners yet then we've collected together the top three starting off with First Place and Best In Show, Space Wolf.

This amazing original piece by Sergio Calvo Rubio is utterly amazing and shows off so many amazing techniques. The work across the armour is fantastic, giving it a realistic sheen but also drawing on the artwork that inspired it by Paul Bonner.

I always like seeing people paint up wolves and fur, and the attention to detail that's gone into blending together the variations in the fur here is amazing. You get a real sense that the two pieces are mirroring each other as if both the Space Marine and the Wolf are bonded in their purpose simply by the posing of the overall entry.

It truly is rather fantastic and it's nice to see the artwork of Paul Bonner continuing to inspire painters. I'm still looking at all the little details on show here including the snow that has been sprinkled over the models strategically to plant them within the setting.

The Tribute

Second place went to Michal Pisarski who painted up this amazing scene showing a Vampire Lord pledging his allegiance to Nagash in the world of Warhammer Fantasy.

Again, an amazing piece with a real sense of scale to it. You can feel the scene looming over the Vampire as he pledges his sword to the Lord of Undeath and it's a decidedly imposing diorama.

Seeing Nagash like this also adds to his villainy and I think this is possibly one of the best representations of him out there right now. He looks like the dangerous God-like figure of the background. You can get a closer look at The Tribute over on the Crystal Brush Awards Page.

Oz

Third place, with an utterly amazing piece, we also have Oz by Francesco Farabi showing Dorothy in a strange world of mysticism and whimsy alongside her strange friends on the road to the Emerald City.

I really like the reimagining of the different characters to give them this creepier vibe, almost like they've been Malifaux'd. It's a great piece, packed with charming little nods including the Tin Man's inner workings and the fact that Dorothy is looking after the mighty lion rather than the other way around.
