Cadian Stands! Big Astra Militarum Update For Warhammer 40K!
October 10, 2022 by brennon
Games Workshop had their big celebration of Warhammer 40,000 over the weekend and revealed not 10th Edition but a new Army Launch Set for the Astra Militarum. Cadia Stands!

Shop Warhammer 40,000 @ Store.OnTableTop
The new set comes with a whole host of options for those building up an Astra Militarum force, perhaps for the first time. Brand new plastic infantry are on the way plus loads more including Sentinels, Field Ordanance Batteries and more.
Astra Militarum Army Set Reveal
Inside the set, you'll get twenty Cadian Shock Troops, a Command Squad, a Field Ordanance Battery and a Sentinel. You will also find the new Codex which has been in the works for a while. The focus here is on the Cadians as you can see by the colour scheme but you could use them to bring any regiment to life with enough tweaking and tinkering.

These weren't the only miniatures previewed during the event either. We also got this new Commissar which I'm in two minds about. I would have liked to have seen him doing a bit of shouting!

There are also lots more options for some of the bigger kit that is going to be rolling onto the battlefield for the Astra Militarum. The new Sentinels are looking ace and can be built open-topped or close, based on the battlefield role you want them to take on. Get those chainswords ready!

Also, I am fully on board when it comes to the larger artillery pieces that we're seeing. They seem totally on brand for the Astra Militarum.
Heavy Weapons Teams // Warhammer 40,000
You can bring lore-bore cannons, multi-missile launchers, lascannons and more to the tabletop to utterly terrify the enemy. I love the little dioramas that you get to make when you build artillery crews and these are no different. I like that a lot of them could be used on tank crews as well if you wanted to add some character to some of those bigger vehicles.
Additionally, it was also mentioned that you can now mix and match your forces from different Regiments. Want some Catachans fighting alongside your Cadians? Go for it. Could this mean that we're going to be seeing updated kits for a lot more of the factions fighting under the umbrella of the Astra Militarum?
Boarding Actions!
As well as the new Astra Militarum miniatures, we also got word of a new style of game for Warhammer 40,000. Boarding Actions has compact 500-point forces clashing in narrow corridors on board spaceships or perhaps within the confines of a key strategic base planetside.

Vehicles and Monsters are not allowed here and instead elite infantry and squads of core troops will be trying to secure the board room-by-room in deadly engagements.
Boarding Actions Teaser Trailer
I love the idea of a smaller and more compact gaming experience where things don't get blown off the table on turn one. Making things a lot more claustrophobic might be just what you need to see the likes of Terminators or Howling Banshees shine.
Boarding Actions Examples // Warhammer 40,000
Alongside the new way of playing Warhammer 40,000, you'll also find some new gubbins to help theme a particular force. Basing kits and more have been previewed over on the Warhammer Community Blog showing off the ways you could make specific 500-point elite forces for use in Boarding Actions.
Arks Of Omen - New Supplement!
Rules for Boarding Actions can be found inside a new supplement coming to Warhammer 40,000 called Arks Of Omen.
Arks Of Omens // Warhammer 40,000
Arks Of Omen marks the next big turning point in the story for Warhammer 40,000. Abaddon has, with the aid of a mysterious ally, been able to make terrifying Arks for his Balefleets that are threatening to bring down what's left of the Imperium.
Arks Of Omen Background
Commanded by some of his loyal servants, these Arks have the potential to cause havoc throughout the galaxy and come armed and armoured for some great conflict. This is going to be part of a new multi-part book series that pushes the narrative forward in Warhammer 40,000. But, it has been noted that rules won't be split across books. We shall see if that's the case!
Daemon Ex Machina?
This led to an interesting teaser from Games Workshop for something coming down the pipeline...
Advent Of The Arkifane
I assume from the way it has been portrayed, we could be getting the Dark Mechanicum as a force in Warhammer 40,000 proper? I don't think we've seen them properly explored before in Warhammer 40,000 so this might be a fun time to see some techno-traitors coming to the fore!
More Upgrades For Khorne!
We also got another neat reveal for those playing as Khornate warriors in Warhammer 40,000. A new Khorne Lord On Juggernaut is going to be rampaging across the battlefield.
Lord Invocatus // Warhammer 40,000
This is certainly an upgrade over the old squat version of this miniature. You get the sense that it really could do some damage as it rampages into your lines. The Juggernaught even has a chainsaw horn which is very in keeping with the Khorne aesthetic!
Lord Invocatus Teaser Trailer
Some impressive miniatures and news of a new storyline and game mode for Warhammer 40,000. It does sound like things are going to be ramping up very soon for the factions fighting it out in the grimdark future and I could see this almost being the "End Times" affair for what we know as Warhammer 40,000. A good way to set up 10th Edition in spectacular fashion?
Are you liking the new Astra Militarum miniatures?

It was so nice of GW to spend their 35 anniversary stream revealing new models for Grimdark Future, such charitable souls. =P
As a guard collector and, ahem, occasional guard painter I’m relieved. They look pretty good, they have the same base size and look like they’ll work with the old models.
We’re still stuck on one stupid kit (yes the Taurox and yes it’s fixable) and that’s pretty good for a 40k army. Thank you for not ruining my army.
Commissar doesn’t look bad. It’s just little bland looking. Then there is that those new Sentinels look even ore like AT-ST walkers from Star Wars. Rest does look nice. Including that new World Eaters guy.
I like the look of them, better than the new squats for sure
I’m glad I have enough of the current line that I will be combining with the leftovers from the two copies of the Blooded box that I have to produce more Traitor Guard.
RESET THE CLO…….oh….no…wait?
Unexpected that GW finally got around to redoing the Guard again. And I agree with the other poster, the Taurox is a pretty poor model kit (good job you can still get the Chimera instead…..oh….no…wait?) 😀
Love the new Cadian unit’s the others are interesting and exciting looking.
New Cadian reveal article went up today, showing of a new character figure.
We are promised a new reveal next week, so perhaps Mondays are going to get Militarumed up.
I like the new look specifically the proportions are not so bulky and the heavy weapons and artillery look amazing.
Gw had no right to release such gorgeous guard models after I bought into league’s of Voltaan
I really like the new Cadians, they have the right amount of colonial marines, starship troopers, high tech low tech weaponry, (completely wasteful and ineffective) Russian army. The only thing I think could be different is the knee protection pads, I think squared patches would have been better, not as refined and a nice oval etc. I can’t tell from the images but I’m also hoping to start seeing more females in the guardsman ranks, some might say its woke but the torso doesn’t need to change as the body armour would be the same but some more slimline arms… Read more »
That Commissar Severina Wotsit was a good example of a female guard done well. If there’s a follow up Ladies of Cadia box set in that style I’ll be happy (and poor).
I like these but Will wait for a smaller box. I want to use them with some miniature agnostic sci-fi games. Boarding action looks cool but I will pass on 40K rules and will 3D print my own walls. Gives me ideas for my own game maybe use Legion rules.
Nice to see G’Wulla finally give the guard an update, and a good one at that. Still not realy interest in 40k as a game anymore but those new guardsmen figures look very nice, much better appearance thats more realistic and the artillery kit is a nice addition and looks and feels like part of the guard. Hopefully, they do a similar treatment to some of the older regiments, and maybe expand the krieg forces with heavy weapons command squads and the like. The sentinel im less convinced by, its too curvy looking, against everything else in the guard that’s… Read more »
The new Guard models look nice, but they blew Cadia up so this was surely a chance to bring in a different Guard army. They could have expanded Gaunt’s Ghosts or gone back to Mordians, Catachans, Valhallans or come up with something new entirely.
“Cadia Stands.”
Every time I hear that it upsets me that GW didn’t allow the clear Chaos victory in The Eye of Terror campaign to have any effect on the setting’s narrative.
I should get over it because it was a long time ago and more recently they’ve allowed their setting to move forward, but I still feel burned.
Are we sure these are on 25mm bases? I heard GW was gonna put them on something new. Like 28mm just to screw with folks! I hope I’m wrong!
I was trying to work out what was wrong with the sculpts and then I realised it was that their hands and wrists were almost in proportion to real-life. Almost. Lovely, high detail sculpts as to be expected from GW. Shame that Imperial guard is a horde army and that means few people will ever get more than a platoon of them painted in their life-times.
