The Black Templars Begin A New Crusade In Warhammer 40K
September 20, 2021 by brennon
The Black Templars of Warhammer 40,000 are ready to head out into the stars once more and continue their crusade. Many of their Games Workshop Battle-Brothers have crossed the Rubicon Primaris and are hunting the witch, burning the heretic and cleansing worlds of the Xenos.

The Black Templars are returning to the tabletop first as part of a new Army Set. This, much like Army Sets of the past, will be your first chance to pick up the newest Black Templars miniatures. Included in the set is a new Primaris Marshal, The Emperor's Champion, a ten-man Primaris Crusader Squad and a Redemptor Dreadnought for bringing larger foes to heel.
The first of the miniatures from the set is the Primaris Marshal. Taking cues from Helbrecht, this fellow comes with a selection of different weapons, alternative heads and that spooky skeleton peering over his shoulders.
Black Templars Marshal // Warhammer 40,000
I have always liked the Black Templars for their archaic look and feel. I love the style of their armour and how they look like Space Knights. Warhammer 40,000 has always had an element of Sci-Fantasy to it but the Black Templars take that to the next level. I'm uncertain about the skeleton friend but I think it's growing on me the more I see it.
In terms of the other new miniatures, we also have the new Primaris Crusader Squad. These are your beefed up Black Templars who bring an array of new weapons to the tabletop.

You'll note that this ten-man squad also features a new Sword Brother to lead them into battle and new Primaris Neophytes. I absolutely love the look of the new Crusaders and the Sword Brother. I think they nailed the look. I'm uncertain about the Neophytes. It's cool that they have upgraded and added them into the mix but the bare arms are throwing me a little.

I think the issue with the Neophytes is the fact that they still have those big shoulder pads. I wonder if they would look better if they were tweaked to have smaller shoulder pads (a bit like Scouts) to mirror their smaller frames. It could also be the paint scheme. Perhaps they'd look different if they were made to look grimmer?
New Codex & Cards
As well as the new miniatures, the Black Templars also get this fancy new Codex. This features classic artwork from John Blanche and contains all of the updated rules you need for playing Black Templars on the tabletop.

In addition to the Codex, you can also get your hands on the brand new Data Cards for the Black Templars on the tabletop. These are bespoke, like the Codex, and will be available first as part of the Army Set.

This is going to be another of their big limited edition boxed sets which introduce a new range to the grim darkness of Warhammer 40,000. So, if you want to get your hands on the miniatures sooner rather than later you're going to have to be fast on the mouse come release.
If you are worried about the cost of the set, have no fear. If this follows the release of other updated factions for Warhammer 40,000, a Combat Patrol set will follow a few weeks down the line and you'll be able to snag everything here separately.
Are you tempted by the new Black Templars?

Great stuff. I agree that they nailed the look. I was wondering what the new primaris scout replacements would look like. Now we have our answer. Expect a new Space Marine codex when they become mainstream for all chapters.
Think I’ll pass, GW models for a while now are more trouble than their worth. The sculpts have become so intricate that they are becoming impossible to paint unless you use sub assemblies for even the most basic trooper and let’s face it at 3 feet away you will not notice a 5mm gap between armour and cloak unless it’s still in primer or grey plastic.
Ah this is limited release boxed set just like one that SoB got in 8th ed. I am not too fond at Primaris Neophytes or even idea that those are thing.
GW not slowing down on the Templar stuff

Makes for a great vignette – but I like him more with the helmet on.
Nice primaris marine’s to add to players force’s
It’s great for those who collect Black Templars. Me tempted… not a bit. And as far as themed launch boxes go this strikes me as the worst one.
As nice as they look … I’d rather have GW update the non spacemarine factions first.
The Orks got new boyz, now it’s time for new Eldar troops (and an end to the failcast production for their elite troops).
Naked arms with giant shoulder pads? Why?
The marshal remonds me of Hellboy and the speaking corpse…
