Battleforces Hit For Age Of Sigmar & Warhammer 40,000 Plus Hobbit Terrain!
December 3, 2016 by brennon
The worlds of Age of Sigmar and Warhammer 40,000 are a little more welcoming this week as pre-orders popped up for the new Battleforce Boxed Sets from Games Workshop which give you a new collection of models for starting or bolstering an existing force.
Kicking things off we'll look to the world of Fantasy...
Age Of Sigmar
My favourite of the new set of four has to be the Sylvaneth set that they've put together. Featuring a Treeman plus loads of other awesome miniatures from the new range this just seems to scream out 'hobby time' to me. I really want to paint up a nature based army!
Additionally, it would also be very cool to pick up the Stormcast Eternal set to add to my main army from the world of Age of Sigmar. With my original set still primed and ready for combat it would be good to get in some other units and the rather epic Celestant-Prime into the mix.
For the forces of Chaos we have Khorne Bloodbound with a mass of new warriors who will be slavering over the prospect of slaughter ahead of them.
For Destruction you can also expand upon your Ironjawz army with these greenskins. I really like the character you get in this set which has an almost World of Warcraft side to his design.
Inside the set, you'll also get what you need to play with these troops in battles on the tabletop. All of them come with a couple of characters, some core battleline troops and then something special to spice things up too. I am very tempted by both the Stormcast and Sylvaneth sets. The bonus is, they're both Order!
It is a shame that we didn't see a Death set include here but they don't have new miniatures to draw on yet.
Warhammer 40,000
Similarly, the world of the grim-dark future is also welcoming some new armies starting off with some Space Marines in the shape of the Space Wolves and the Deathwatch.
The Space Wolves boxed set that you can see first above is actually the best saving for money of all of the sets according to a few commenters. Once again each of the sets gives you the basics you need to play the game with a few extras thrown in and the rules for using them on the tabletop as is.
Backing up the Xenos threat and working behinds the scenes on their own machinations we have the Tau Empire and the Adeptus Mechanicus.
I think of all the sets the Adeptus Mechanicus one feels the most disappointing because it doesn't include as many miniatures as the other sets. However, from a gameplay and points viewpoint it probably matches up quite well against the other sets that they've designed.
Once again it's a shame not to see some of the other races getting a look in like the Eldar and the Tyranids but maybe they are coming down the pipeline.
The Hobbit
Rounding things off for this week we actually have a release for The Hobbit: Strategy Battle Game! Here we have the new Lake-Town House which comes with a lovely plastic house, some jetties and walkways as well as a boat!
The idea is that this set can be combined with other Lake-Town House Sets to create a network and, of course, the place where (in the movies at least) Legolas and the Dwarves clashed with Orcs during the night.
Of course, you could also put together the scenario where Smaug starts to lay waste to the town on the water while Bard gets ready to fire the black arrow into his heart.
This is a neat little kit to play around with and we're looking forward to seeing what the avid fan base for the game does with them when it comes to building tabletops.
What will you be picking up this week?

Oh that hobbit terrain certainly does look good – great to see some nice looking civilian buildings available. If it is scaled so I can get away with using it for 28mm minis then I’ll need to start setting funds aside…
Love that Hobbit scenery. Definitely on the purchase list for some fantasy games. (Moonstone, Arceworld etc) and I’m picking up the Admech box. Mix it with two of the ‘Getting Started’ boxes and you have a solid force to play around with.
That Hobbit scenery is really good looking. I must admit that I am tempted to get one of those 40k Battleforce boxes. Maybe Tau one so that at last I could get them started.
That set plus a Get Started would certainly look pretty sexy on the table…
not to try and sway your own opin-FOR THE GREATER GOOD!
I’ve a tables worth of fabled realms terrain, yet i still want to throw several £100 at Lake Town
Have already ordered the Lake town house set (group of 3 with the small but welcome saving) The Sylvaneth set is on the list to pick up too as it will take my 1000 pt force up a bit and I don’t have Drycha
The saving is relatively small but we’re seeing money off on GW bundles more and more frequently. Long may it continue!
Get Started’s are the best thing they have right now. 🙂 Thats the only reason I got my necrons. 😛
the hobbit buildings look good.
I went to.order the Laketown houses and already sold out.
I want to buy about 3 of those battleforces to finish my armies. Just don’t know what to get first.
The Laketown terrain set is really wonderful. Such a shame they didn’t release it at the time, but better late than never. I can only imagine how good it will look to put loads together and have a proper table covered in this kind of scenery.
The box sets look good too.
Are these Battle Forces only exclusive to GW? I cant seem to find them up for preorder from my usual FLGS sites.
They are not, ordered my at my flgs, they have to put it on there site off course 🙂
Loving the Laketown house. Seems they drastically underestimated initial sales which they’re getting really good at (Skaven Bloodbowl team also sold out in minutes). Will buy at least a dozen once they’re back in stock.
Battleforces are really nice. Great value compared to buying individually as always. If it weren’t for the 2 squads of Liberators, of which I already have 3, I would be picking up the Stormcast one.
Yeah if they put a unit of judicators in there that would have been perfect. I’m still going to pick it up though for the other models I need for my army. I might just arm the unit of liberators with dual welding hammers.
Not a bad plan really. Would be nice to have some variety in Liberators i suppose, and the rest of the box is still good value for £80 from a discount retailer. Could even just bulk Liberator units out to 10-man units.
Laketown scenary is fantastic and in no way limited to the hobbit a versatile kit with loads of possibilities.
Starter boxes seem reasonable value, not sure on some of the contents not one for me but can see them shifting.
Interestingly the “3 pack” is sold out in Australia but individuals are still available. Obviously they are on to something with this
Laketown is beautiful. I think the Hobbit was a lost oppurtunity. If the costs and material (finecast) hadn’t been so idiotic the game would be in a much better place now. Good to see new life being injected into it.
Very tempted by those 40k and Fantasy sets…
Maybe the lake town stuff is so popular because it has no skulls on it. I know this is the first GW product in a long time that I would like to get.
If these Battleforces are NOT limited runs then this is AMAZING.
