New Bases & Decorations For Warhammer 40k By Games Workshop
May 28, 2016 by brennon
Games Workshop haven't got any new miniatures coming out this week but instead a series of different Bases & Base Inserts for Warhammer 40,000 armies. All of these are from the Sector Imperialis range and give you some themed bases for tying your army together.
Sector Imperialis 25 & 40mm Round Bases
First up we have these, a set which gives you a selection of 25mm and 40mm Bases. As you can see they have an interesting mix of designs on them but with plenty of space for you to stand your miniatures without them looking awkward.
It's interesting that they are actually now moving into the realm of Bases since it's something that they've never really done before.
Sector Imperialis 32mm Round Bases
Next up we have a slightly larger and more standard set of 32mm Round Bases for you to use for your Space Marines.
These appear to have plenty of interior and exterior building detail meaning you could represent quite the battleworn installation with these. The additional bonus of these is that they fit in well with the Realm of Battle boards that they already create.
Sector Imperialis 60mm Round, 75mm Oval & 90mm Oval Bases
Going one bigger they also have designed a selection of Round and Oval Bases for your Walkers, Vehicles, Flyers and more. Once again they mirror the Realm of Battle Board.
It would be interesting to see this on the likes of Space Marines of course and Imperial Guardsmen but imagine if you went the next step and did some Orky upgrades to these?
Sector Imperialis Large Base Detail Kit
Last but not least we have this Detail Kit which gives you a series of stick on pieces (a bit like a bitz box) for your larger based models.
You could use these on your Imperial Knights for example to show them stomping through ruins or a blasted Church (or other Holy Site).
What kind of sculpted bases and base inserts do you think you'd like to see them do next?
Do you think we could see Games Workshop expanding upon this?

I probably wouldn’t use them, the whole aesthetic is not doing it for me, but they are alright and price to quantity is reasonable.
Let hope we see some more interesting designs, but I guess that depends on time investment, this looks like stuff that has been relatively easy to do using existing CAD files not sure we will see new and original.
Aesthetic does nothing for me either but I’m with you in regards to seeing something a bit more interesting in the future, there have been plenty of interesting ‘one off’ bases packaged with single sprue minis (Wight King and Skink Shaman spring to mind for me) that were really nice so hopefully we’ll see something along those lines in the future.
.. and I have just glued my elder assassins to the wrong bases 🙁
yesterday 🙁
If they just didn’t add the aquila or skulls on the bases I might have got them. They look like an easy fill or clip, but if you need to do that they your better off just making them.
Once again, GW is trying to get a slice of a cake that’s been popularized over a decade ago, and presenting it as if it were a revolution… The paint-job really isn’t great, but it may be useful and thematic, and maybe the plastic won’t be as soft as it looks.
I agree… Isn’t it another case of “not enough, too late”?
better late, than never ?
They’re really competitively priced and fit the aesthetic of their realm of battle board thingy, what’s wrong with that?
You make it sound as though GW has no right to compete, it’s a nice move that will hopefully lead to more variety from GW and up the competition from other producers a bit.
Not at all, really. I do welcome those bases on the market… GW know how to do plastics, and how to market them in large quantities, and they don’t seem overpriced. It may be another sign that GW is finally turning around and finally opening up to the real hobby market. Still, a little late…
What the saying, fashionably late? 😛
To be fair the competition doesn’t need to be upped. There is already a massive variety of high quality bases on offer from dozens of producers. This is great for newbies and people who only know or play 40k and GW, doubt if it will turn many heads otherwise.
The thing is that to the average gw “hobbiest” (or at least what gwPLC think that is dispite proudly doing no market research) this is new and revolutionary because all that walking wallet has experienced of the actual hobby has been filtered solely through their local gw/warhammer store.
Apparently there are some of these people who have never heard of Google out there. To be fair these are reasonable and a down right bargin by gwPLC standards but too lackluster for my tastes.
Some people have a very patronising view of the “average GW hobbyist”. Nowhere has GW claimed that these bases are a revolutionary idea. You’re just attacking straw men here people.
you underestimate the advantage that a proper brick&mortar store has to those relatively new to the hobby.
Yes, you can buy this stuff from strangers out there on the internet.
You can now also buy them from your trusted friends at GW.
The ones who are guaranteed to deliver what is in the box.
It’s true GW seem to have turned around… but I still remember Finecast, and how that was nothing like what was promised. I still remember GW putting a lot of Brick and Mortar stores out of business, and trying those terrible one-man stores… And of course there’s always pricing, and the low quality they were stuck with for a long time. Let’s just say mistakes have been made for the past decade or more, and we’re all glad they’re getting back in the game. Now, there’s no reason to think this won’t be a fine product… it’s even competitively priced… Read more »
Absolutely spot on.
I remember trying to glue car-mesh to Space Hulk bases to look like ship panels – glue everywhere
About six years ago there was an American company making lightweight plastic bases with sculpted on street/industrial detail – what were they called? – they had no UK distributors as far as I know…
There are so many now…
Yeah I know that one, Champ Industries.

I bought a bunch when the dollar was low, very good stuff
Once again GW make it hard to see what you’re actually getting with their paint job. I will be getting a pack of these though. I love the whole 40kishness of them 🙂
Some good bases in there, and surprisingly, they’re not priced at extortion levels. I usually order from Tabletop Art but I may pick up a set of these for variety.
These are extremely nice and would like them, but, you knew there was a but coming yes!
So but I really enjoy doing my own and these are good looking stuff maybe a couple of sets in the old bits box. They will be good though to anyone needing that instant fix.
GW just keeps growing from strength to strength IMHO.
Good hunting

Agreed, I enjoy making my own as well but these are nice for a bit of variety.
They must have passed these off to a work experience kid to paint. The paint job is poor and doesn’t match any of the colour schemes they’ve done guides or tutorials for. Not that I’m too bothered, these are exactly what I wanted and I’ve already ordered a few packs. Was considering re-basing my Dark Angels anyway.
Five skulls in a neat row all looking directly up? I just don’t get it. Maybe one skull if were looking slightly cattywampus would be okay.
In the 41st millennium, they use skulls to fill in potholes in the road.
i would like to use these for my deathwatch overkill…but…
men to get all i need it would be 1 each of these packs with lot’s of leftovers, that makes them expensive (around 80€)…. i think i’ll stick to Green stuff!^^
Wish thy put up some sprue pics with this release.
Totally agree. Sprue pics are the things I’m always most interested in seeing with any GW release.
Yup. Skulls would have to go. Filed down and filled in with green stuff.
The most interesting thing about this release is that for the first time in months GW haven’t had an interesting release for the week. It is normally big new models or games, now some OK bases.
I suppose even the sculptors need unchaining from their desks and allowed outside from time to time 😛
I like the Base detail kit. I could see myself picking one of those up, more for use in terrain making than basing though as I am not fan of overly elaborate basing personally. The actual bases look OK and if I was still in to 40k I could go for them – they have interest and detail but aren’t OTT.
They have to do this to adapt or they will keep on bleeding. They had a great thing going years ago with selling bits until they killed that off and pissed off a great deal of GW supporting people. It hurt them, too. The hobby they claimed they wanted to promote just wasn’t getting it after that silly move. Some of us Elephants, heh, still remember these sort of things. I moved on from them long ago but it’s funny to see them make these moves after they realize it was stupid and learn how much success new companies have… Read more »
Good for newbies/kids that haven’t ever set foot outside a GW store. Very inconsequential for everyone else, there is just so much like this out there already !
Or if you want your bases to match the aesthetic of your board.
I now the containers and the like come out the following week; but does anybody know if they will be doing an AOS line of bases? Thanking you inadvance.
There are like a million different fantasy type bases of literally any type you can imagine already available 😀
And yet none that feature the exact style of iconography found on the forthcoming Age of Sigmar Realm of Battle boards. 😉
What’s the exact iconography? A dollar sign I take it ? 😀
No, the list is –
1) Skulls
2) Skullz
3) Moar Skullz
4) Did we mention there’d be skulls?
5) Skulls
6) Skrulls who have shapeshifted into skulls
7) The Numskulls
8 ) Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
9) Steve Austin’s Broken Skull Challenge
10) Skulls
Also, Hagar the Horrible’s drinking song

@redben you’re thinking of 40k. Age of Sigmar is all hammers, twin tailed comets and wiggly writing 😉
I was thinking of WFB. Even the houses have skulls.
