Are you going to drill out the gun barrels? On the mini with the jet pack at 45 seconds in, the first think I noticed were the solid gun barrel ends.
One thought i have had about the barrels is that it might not be such a good idea before you dip, as that stuff is pretty gloopy and could just fill the hole up with wood stain/dip
Stay tuned. I’m going to do a little “revision” work and post it up using some of the suggestions you guys have made 🙂

@johnlyons one thing i have found to really help with free hand is to get all mad scientist with my mediums and addatives…
In short i added half a drop of drying retarder and about 10 drops of flow aid to GW lamayen medium (or how ever its spelt) and then add a drop of that mix to what ever colour im trying to freehand with, found it really helps with the paint drying on the brush and keeping a nice flow when drawing outlines…
Should work just as well with AP mixing medium or any other matte acrylic medium out there.
I know it’s a sore point, but did you think about 3D printed chapter shoulder pads before construction?
Yes, and the problem we would have is that these are the Dark Imperium models. Most of their shoulder pads are moulded to the arms which would have been a pain to remove for custom ones 🙂 Maybe on the multi-part kits it is easier.
Any tips for wobbly hands when doing freehand
Cheers.
@colin75, I don’t freehand for precisely this reason. I am strictly decals.
shop board painters use a stick to rest their hand/arm for letter painting @colin75 could help.
I nave spinal nerve damage. I suspect that I am beyond stick help.
@colin75 depends on the sort of wobbles, if your talking neurological no sorry, other wise some general advaice is: Get comfortable both feet on the floor, brace your fore arms against the desk edge, mount your mini on something that you can comfortably hold i.e. dont hold it by the base you want something that sits naturally in your hand without having to grip it tightly, for me thats a round tub between the size of a coke can and the vallejo bottles you can see in the vid above. use your off hands finger tips to brace your brush… Read more »
Best thing I find is before you do it. Relax for an hour. Avoid caffeine and if you can, eat a Banana. It will help settle your muscles a little 🙂
You might find you get more control using something like Rotoring fine drawing pens
You are probably right. I will look into them for next time 🙂
@johnlyons
The whole army looks fab so far! Nearly makes me want to do my own chapter 😉
Great choice of colours and the freehands look spot on.
Drilling out the barrels after the dip is probably a good idea. I’m hoping the dip doesn’t make the whole thing look messy/ dirty so I’m looking forward to seeing the next few steps.
I’m definitely staying tuned 😎
Still not convinced by the Khaki skin tone tho tbh but I’ll wait till they are finished before making my mind up..lol
Great series again, keep’em coming man!!!
@johnlyons
army is looking amazing. i work as head designer at a promotional and uniform printers in Surrey, England and resonantly i have moved in to doing persanlised waterslide transfer sheets, has a quick play with them myself and they do work well enough. ill see if i can send you guys some to play with and see what you think. oh and yes these are WHITE INK and Individual sheets NOT BULK. ill see if i can send you some in the new year to try.

Thanks for the advice will give it a try,
cheers.
There’s no way I would have attempted free hand on the insignia – would have been a wobbly, irregular mess. I would have tried to make my own decals.
As you point out, white ink in printers is a real problem. However, given the insignia here is just two crossed white swords, I would have thought it possible to find a crossed hole punch from a craft hobby shop and just punched out some white decal paper. Once fixed on, the cross guard could then have been added with free hand.
Yeah that is a way to do it. I will have to cover some decal making soon as I did it for my own marine chapter which are in the 40k forums 🙂
there looking great the figures john.
Looking very nice so far.
