New 40K Astra Militarum Codex, Regiment Ideas + Death Guard Reinforcements
September 26, 2017 by brennon
Games Workshop has shown off what's coming this Saturday in the form of a bundle of new pre-orders for both the Astra Militarum and the Death Guard of Warhammer 40,000. We'll kick off with the backbone of the Imperium.
The new Codex will bring in rules and updates for your Guardsmen on the tabletop as well as more fleshed out sections on the forces of Armageddon, Tallarn, Valhalla, Vostroya, Mordian and the Militarum Tempestus. You can expect new Warlord Traits, Stratagems and more.
You will also find some interesting bits of information on lesser-known Regiments within the Astra Militarum as well as advice on converting soldiers like these fellows.
The Savlar Chem-Dogs is one of the Regiments that I do know about, but it's nice to see them looking towards creating them as a more fleshed out faction in the background and showing off that there's much more beyond the standard look of the Cadian soldier.
As you can see they appear to have raided the bitz box for these Regiments taking from the Freeguild of Age Of Sigmar and the Adeptus Mechanicus of Warhammer 40,000 too which is cool. I look forward to seeing what other Regiments people come up with as well.
New Terrain Set
A new terrain set is also on the way for your Astra Militarum soldiers with Moon Base Klaisus.
Made up using a selection of modular card tiles you can build up a 6x4 board for you to play your games on. It also comes with a selection of push-fit ruins which you can drop onto the tabletop as well. An interesting solution to the subject of storage and building a tabletop.
Death Guard
The Imperium isn't the only faction getting some new goodies this weekend as the Death Guard also get some more reinforcements. This starts with the Tallyman...
...and the Plague Surgeon. Surely the job of the Plague Surgeon is simply to make sure that you're infected enough. I guess they don't have to worry about keeping their instruments clean if the end result is making sure that you're as foetid as possible right?
In addition to the new character packs, we also have a rather large vehicle on the way in the shape of the Plagueburst Crawler here. Part construction vehicle in feel and part rolling mortar this looks like an interesting adaptation of the Vindicator from the Space Marine collection.
There is also an update on the Bloat Drone with a new plastic kit which comes with more of its weapon options for you to have fun with.
As we know, Justin is a big fan of this particular vehicle and now he will have a chance to drop more of them into his games of Warhammer 40,000. That spinning blade of death seems like a good way to mow your way through a unit of Astra Militarum soldiers.
What will you be picking up this week?

Not into 40k at all but those iIndigan ones would make nice invasion of Mars pulp scifi figures
So wait is soon over when Plagueburst Crawler is finally released. We have seen pictures of that thing at Getting Started With Warhammer 40,000 magazine. It’s easily my favorite from those new Death Guard models. With new IG Codex GW would have opportunity to release some upgrade kits to bring those Guardswomen on table top but seems like they won’t.
Ideal set of rules to use the Empire of Men Kickstarter models with 🙂
I’m still confused as to why GW don’t just make 6×4 mats. Converting guard is cool. But expensive, I do really hope they release new plastic guard, I’m very bored and tired of seeing cadians, if marines have had an upgrade since RG returned then I think it’s about time guard did as well
Or maybe just sell some bits sprues? A few alternative heads/arms wouldn’t go amiss
no, i don’t like the torsos and legs either, very bland and boring
I like almost everything that is released for the Deathguard. The IG book is what I’ve been patient for. Wish they would get some nice new kits to replace the extremely ugly Catachan range.
Catachan artwork is great and the concept is awesome. But the plastic figures are terrible 🙁
I heard the Cadians described as ‘Cookie Cut-out’ 🙁
Wish GW would do biker-jacket Rogue Trader style guardmen – Mad Robot do some great conversion bits including Sons of Anarchy lookalikes 🙂
I would love for some plastic Mordians to be released but that’ll just distract from my current project to get back into 40k of making a Praetorian Guard mechanized regiment. I still want to see them bring back someone other than Cadians and Catachans.
the crawler & flyer are sweet but not for smurf’s.
The Nurgle stuff is just amazing and ‘bursting’ with character.
There used to be a joke that the Warhammer Axe Armed Nurgle Chaos Warrior was in every single White Dwarf (He’s on page 121 of the September copy) – chaos has never looked so awesome with these new releases….
Looking forward to the IG pre-order a lot. Those are nice kit bashes, i’d definitely buy a box or five of conversion sprues if they packaged them up as such.
Still liking the Death guard stuff, Tally man is aesome model. But the guard would benefit a lot from some new models to update and provide more diversity.
I’m honestly pretty surprised how old some kits are for some armies in 40k.
The Catachan plastic kit is 3rd edition, the Cadian is…3.5? They’re both about 15+ years old. The other metal / resin regiments, Tallarn, Mordian, etc…are from 2nd edition (20+ year?).
Then you’ve got Eldar Guardians, Ork Boyz and Chaos Space Marines all being 3rd edition plastic kits. Those armies are all fairly popular.
Meanwhile we’ve seen how many different Space Marine kits over the same time period? /shrugs
Anyone else get the banana song in their head after this ?

Come mister tallyman, tally me diseases
Nurgle come and me wanna do as he pleases
…
Imagine a world where the art matched the model. What’s with the chubby?
Imperial Guard is one of a myriad of factions where they have a ton of models considering how few players there actually are for that faction. That GW had the foresight or the good fortune for the Genestealer Cult and AdMech kits to be so interchangeable has to be considered a boon for IG players. Would it be nice to see a bunch of new models for all of the different regiments (Cadian, Vostroyan, Mordian, Catch, Tallarn)? Absolutely. And don’t forget all of the fun toys available to IG players from FW – Krieg + Elysian. Honestly, I’m surprised they… Read more »
Looking forward to getting my mitts on the Tallyman and the new Bloat Drone weapons. The Flesh Mower is particularly awesome.
It seems silly for GW to try and suggest all these converted regiments of Imperial Guard when they don’t even offer bit services or conversion boxes.
Guardsmen are expensive enough as it is, dollar per point; the last thing I need to do is pay another $50 per 10 guardsmen to get special heads.
Are they neat? Of course. They’re just not practical at all for anyone who isn’t working for the company, or made of disposable income.
Plague drone with lawnmower Sold!!!
