Games Workshop Announce Citadel Paint The App
August 21, 2017 by thisisazrael
Games Workshop has announced through Warhammer Community that they will be releasing a free Citadel Paint app in September.
"The Citadel Paint System is an easy, straightforward method for painting awesome looking models, and this September it’s going to get even easier. There’s a new app on the way designed to help you paint like a pro, whether you’re just starting out or you’re a veteran looking for a handy pocket reference guide."
More information is expected next week, though they have touted that it'll be almost as good as having "Duncan in your pocket".
With the details so far I imagine we can expect to see plenty of Warhammer TV content made available through the app.
I'll be curious to see what other backdated assets are added in such as army specific tutorials or articles taken from White Dwarf or the website.
With it being free I'm also curious to see if there will be much advertising or evening methods to order paint through the app.
What functionality would you like to see from the app to make it useful to you?

Please let it be an app that paints your minis for you lol
Don’t you get me excited @redben!

“it’ll be almost as good as having “Duncan in your pocket“.”
I’m guessing it will.
Duncan and John painting frenzy?
How exciting having Duncan in your pocked is would depend entirely on the pocket on which he was in I suppose.
I’d like something impossible… an app that tells me wich paints i have to mix in wich ratio to get a color i want from a photo!^^
it should take in account washes of course!^^
If B&Q can do it for wall paint….. might not be that impossible….
Az
Reaper already do that, go to their website and check out power pallet
I don’t think it will be useful to me as I don’t use Citadel paints. I don’t think the paint is bad, I just hate the pots it comes in.
Citadel paint is as good as any other range and having 3 GW stores, all open 7 days a week means it’s also an incredibly convenient paint range for me to use. But FML – those pots. And the new wash pots are even worse; narrow and tall is not a great design
Yup, the top half of the washes from these pots just goes over the desk, so they may as well be the same size as normal pots.
I’ve decanted a few of them into dropper bottles and peeled off and transferred the sticker.
Call me jaded but I guess this will be the end of free tutorials from GW?
It wouldn’t be in line with what GW have been doing this last year; the painting videos help sell the paints / brushes in addition to any new models themselves, plus it seems to be a daily feature where Duncan provides a quick answer to a painting question. Cynically speaking, the ap would help with all of that as well, although GW seem much more community minded of late so I think credit should be given to that as well. If you were talking about 2015 (or earlier) GW, I’d be there with you with regards to cynicism, but I’d… Read more »
I doubt it. If anything I would expect the App to have a link to their YouTube channel. Their social media presence has been a big factor in the reversal of their fortunes, the community loves it and Duncan’s painting videos are a real highlight. I doubt very much that GW will be putting an end to that
EUREKA! i’ve found a preview of the app:
I would like it to have a model painter function so I can call up an outline of all GWS model and vehicle types so I could try out new colour schemes
Has anyone ever had Duncan in their pocket? How big do your pockets need to be? I’m sot sure I’d like that.
He fits into the pocket of either of my two thin coats…
It is plausible that Duncan could fit in a large pocket on casters sown the back of a Tee shirt, the issue is not getting Duncan into the pocket as he could be lured in unsuspecting having said there are painters in the corner not watering down their paints. The real issue is there is actually only one Duncan, now this came as a complete surprise to me as I have actually seen more than one Duncan at the same time seen on phones, tablets, PCs and laptops all different makes as well. Perhaps a schedule or rota could be… Read more »
interesting.
It will be really interesting to see what this app does, I would say largely it is going to have the colour chart you see in every GW store where is says base and then it points one way dry brushing the other way washes and it has the colour stages inbetween. I think that is what it will largely be. However, I think if they have an incidental function which will be something I would actually be interested in, which is just a paint tracker which says do you have this may of this paint x0 x1 x2 x3… Read more »
At minimum it should have an app equivalent of the giant wall poster that hangs in every shop (and came in one of the older White Dwarfs) of the citadel paint schemes showing how to combine the range of base + layer + shade/drybrush to achieve the full gamut of the color range. I would REALLY like it if it had reference photos of all the common races, factions and sub-factions along with the list of colors used to achieve them. So, if I want to paint something in “Hive Fleet Behemoth” scheme or “Imperial Fists”, I can just search… Read more »
If it just has an updated version of their paint scheme poster, and a way to track which paints I already own, I’m sold. At the moment I have to spend time planning my paint buying trips to check which paints are required and whether I own them or not already.
Crazy talk that’s no way to approach paint purchasing… just go to the shop and buy them, you can never have too much paint 😉
I just look for the pretty colours
Hopefully I can track my paint collection in this!
GW paints are cool – but I’ve got ones going back about five generations – hopefully it’ll accurately tell me what I need to get to replace my Midnight Blue, Bilious Green and Pallid Flesh…
Bilious Green = Moot Green
Midnight Blue = Kantor Blue
Pallid Flesh = Rakarth Flesh (probably)
Close – Bilious – 50/50 Moot/Dorn with something to lighten it slightly, Pallid – almost Kislev Flesh – a wee bit paler, Midnight – near impossible to replicate – Kantor Blue with Abaddon Black and maybe some Purple Ink – it always had a weird oily purplish sheen to it once dry – darker than black. The blue of the abyss. It’s more a statement to say that it’s best to stock up on specific colours cos you don’t know when you’ll have to start formulating your own replacement. Colours change over time and with fashions. I used to know… Read more »
Well, GW are only ever going to give you a nearest matvh, which is what I did. It’s a safe bet that you don’t have to keep stocking up on colours – they haven’t changed their range all that often
