Adeptus Mechanicus The Big New Codex For Warhammer 40,000?
January 2, 2015 by brennon
Rumours abound have been muttering of there being a new codex on the way for Warhammer 40,000 and the real winner appears to be the Adeptus Mechanicus. A few snippets of concept art have dripped onto the internet that sparked some very vibrant rumours alongside a bit of insider information (reportedly)...
This is the black and white art that sparked the rumours and appeared to be in keeping with a style we'd seen on some previous codices. It doesn't particularly feel like the work of Raymond Swanland although I think a lot of his style comes from some very good colour choices.
According to rumours there are troops, elites and some vehicles already in the works including the Skitarii, some tank-spider hybrids and a 'Dragoon' walker similar in style to a Sentinel from the Imperial Guard with a grafted human in it's centre.
Maybe we'll soon be seeing armies like this one from Mordian 7th Regiment taking to the battlefield in a mess of machinery and man. I think the Adeptus Mechanicus would be a real hit for Warhammer 40,000 and hopefully the codex will reveal some juicy secrets about this cult of machine worshippers.
There's always the possibility that this is could well be either a smaller codex like the one for Imperial Knights or it's a supplement and/or digital only product like Sisters of Battle/Adepta Sororitas.
Necrons MUST be on the cards at some point so it would be interesting to see where the Adeptus Mechanicus fall in terms of that new release. Considering the links between the Necron C'tan - Mag'ladroth the Void Dragon - and the Cult that could be rather fun!
What do you think?

Well that is interesting. I can’t image them getting physical book but then again it’s impossible either.
I’m hoping for Harliquins, but Mechanicus would be cool – as would any new faction really.
A Mechanicus codex would be a very excutung development for 40K, if these rumours prove to be true. Ad Mech have been a major presence in the background lore of 40K for years, so it would make sense to give them a tabletop presence, but I have long since given up trying to predict which way GW will jump when it comes to this type of things. We will just have to wait and see.
SISTERS
seriously !! it’s not even funny now
Agreed. In fact I wish they would had given Sisters new codex before giving codex to new army. They must really hate Sisters.
The only way I find this acceptable is if they *know* that bring out these Mars chaps will defo bring them in a huge wad of cash which they earmarked for updating the Sisters in a large way – complete overhaul, brand new models across the board.
Yeah! About bloody time! Been restricted to 30k only with my mechanicum army.
Ah. Well. I guess the Adeptus Mechanicus is alright … but … I’m still waiting for Sisters of Battle. Sigh.
Though I guess given GW’s recent releases the past year they’d probably ruin them, so maybe it’s better this way.
But … still… I dare to dream and hope.
I have a few friends who will get excited about this. It would seem an obvious choice if they are going to introduce something new to 40k
It’s an interesting move. If it’s necessary I don’t know since Forgeworld already has an extensive library of Mechanicum models. Also, out of the 19 armies listed on the GW website, 11 of them are Imperial. If you wanted to impress me, finally combine the Inquisition and the Adeptus Sororitas into one new codex and give me some plastic sisters. Or, if you really wanted to throw me for a loop make it “Warhammer 40K: The End Times” and bring in the Old Ones.
Uh oh, I picked up some mechanicum at warhammerfest last year but consoled myself that its just a wee side project as it’s 30k.
If this rumour is true I can hear my wallet wimpering “hold me” at the thought of a mainstream 40k army.
I’m not so sure we will see sisters again as any kind of new release. It’d cost a lot to redo the stuff in plastics as they are going with everything now and I’m not sure there is the market for it. I often wonder why they don’t have their stores poll customers on things like that though. Whilst at the till a ‘would you be interested in buying the sisters of battle models if they were to be redone?’ or is that approach to simple? Heck if its something they deem as too risky why not the kickstarter route… Read more »
The problem being people will only realise how much they wanted new Sisters of Battle *after* they were re-released with new and better rules + brand new models we’ve never even conceived of… Now that the certain misogynists or worse, have left GW, those who quite like to write gory descriptions of Sisters of Battle dying for literally no reason … I hoped we would move into the Sisters of Battle being rebooted with a bit of respect. Less people play Sisters because the ruddy models are from the 90s !!! …we’re literally going to get a new Star Wars… Read more »
I am getting tired to Sisters dying gory deaths in fiction for no reason than maybe those writing those getting off from that. Even when they are in big part like in Blood of Asaheim they were mostly there to die.
Bring back the squat
If this follows threw I be picking up some of Raging Heroes Iron Empire necrobot and priestesses as they would fit right in with this type of army.
about bloody time.. GW will have seen the profits and demand for the mechanicum from forgeworld and jumped on it to make some money… heres hoping forgeworld put some 40k stamped rules on their models as well
“Necrons MUST be on the cards at some point so it would be interesting to see where the Adeptus Mechanicus fall in terms of that new release. Considering the links between the Necron C’tan – Mag’ladroth the Void Dragon – and the Cult that could be rather fun!” No. No it would not. I want to collect an Adeptus Mechanicus army, not a Lulz Secretnecrons army. I thought one of the reasons they did the whole Newcrons thing was that they recognised shoehorning “it wus the C’tan what dun it” into *every single faction* backstory was moronic. Expanding the throwaway… Read more »
I can sisters going the way of squats , beast men et al , in the fluff as a part of the history and lore ,but retconned out of any major action , and stopping the line.
Personally , I have resigned myself to this , and started all female inquisition , seems to work out, but isn’t as much fun.
I would love to see a Mechanicus army, it would give me something to collect and build again. But I would love to see it as a neutral army with its own agenda, I’ve always seen them that way. Oh, and of course, drop what is left of the whole C’tan thing. That was stupid.
Odd that some people view of the C’tan in the Mechanicus as a horrid take on the story. Back in the days before the Necrons had personalities, C’tans where the leaders and such, I found it much more scary the thought that they were controlled by this alien force. I also gave a dark look into man’s psyche. We people always think we have control of our surroundings and look down on others that we think are lesser. The C’tan influencing them was like todays social networks that become all encompassing in our way of life but not really contributing… Read more »
That’s one way to look at it I suppose. For me involving not one but two god-like external forces robs the faction of any agency and in so doing robs their story of any meaning. It could be said that it gives us a look into the darker aspects of *the Emperor’s* psyche, in that it shows just how far he was willing to go in order to bring about the outcomes he desired, but I don’t see that it says anything about humanity that wasn’t adequately covered by the God-Emperor/Ecclesiarchy dynamic or Chaos. What makes the Mechanicus interesting to… Read more »
