Adeptus Custodes Clash With Genestealers In 40K Shadow Throne
November 1, 2021 by brennon
Games Workshop are going to be introducing two new Codexes into the running for Warhammer 40,000 before the end of 2021. Adeptus Custodes and Genestealer Cults are going to be getting new books and a new boxed set, Shadow Throne.

Shadow Throne follows the emergence of the Genestealer Cults on Terra itself. When the seat of The Emperor himself is threatened it falls to the Adeptus Custodes to root out the interlopers and purge them from the planet.

The box will follow the Adeptus Custodes as they delve deep into the inner workings of Terra and root out the Genestealer Cults who have taken up residence. Familiar miniatures make up the core of each force here but there are also two new miniatures in Shadow Throne for those who like playing as each faction.
Aristothes Carvellan leads the way for the Adeptus Custodes, a Blade Champion who puts even his fellow Custodes to shame.
Aristothes Carvellan // Warhammer 40,000
He is clad in the same archaic-yet-effective armour as his Battle-Brothers and could be a great sub-commander for a larger force of Custodes on the tabletop. If you're making a smaller army then he would make a pretty effective close combat leader too. He even gets to switch between three different fighting styles so he can take on monsters, solo combatants and larger swarms equally easily.
When faced by the golden armoured transhuman warriors of the Imperium, how do you win? Well, the Genestealer Cults have secret weapons and one of them comes in the form of Mersea Thrayk.
Mersea Thrayk // Warhammer 40,000
She is a Reductus Saboteur and her job is to make it incredibly difficult for the Adeptus Custodes to get close to their foes. It's a little hard to do any fighting when the very building you're running through is wired with explosives and could vanish into a pile of rubble at the press of a plunger.
I do like this match-up. You've got the (somewhat) straightforward Adeptus Custodes who want to get into the fighting quickly and brutally murder their foes. Arrayed against them are the Genestealer Cults who are all about subterfuge and trickery, drawing their enemies in only to vanish into the shadows, springing their traps. A thinkers army perhaps!
New Warhammer 40,000 Codexes
Both factions are also going to get themselves new books. The Adeptus Custodes offering brings all of the Talons Of The Emperor together and allows you to integrate the Sisters Of Silence into your Custodes armies properly.
Codex: Adeptus Custodes // Warhammer 40,000
This also makes the Adeptus Custodes a fully-fledged army in their own right. This is certainly an elite army in every sense of the word and the new Stratagems, Relics, and Warlord Traits are there to make them effective at their job. Protecting The Emperor, guarding Terra and vanquishing Xenos.
The Genestealer Cults get themselves an equally bumper packed Codex with loads of new options for using them on the tabletop.
Codex: Genestealer Cults // Warhammer 40,000
There are loads of tricks and tactics within this book for using the Genestealer Cults on the tabletop. They are one of those forces where pre-planning and good use of Command Points are integral to their success. If you can win the battle before it has even begun then you're guaranteed to be there when the Day Of Ascension finally comes. You'll be in the belly of a big Tyranid beast but at least you'll be happy about it.
As someone who has been intrigued by the Adeptus Custodes of late, this one is looking pretty interesting. I'm sure it will make Henry Cavill happy at any rate! I wonder how many of his Custodes he has actually painted?
Are you going to be picking up Shadow Throne?

I think the two new miniatures are great, but this approach of GW to sell you a load of existing miniatures is very gimmicky and unfair on collectors who are forced to wait two or three months just to get the new figures at a premium.
Not cool GW. Not cool at all.
unfortunately it works … and with the way GW handles the preorders there is zero risk for them.
Nice figures.
Sir is this a bug hunt or a stand-up fight.
I loved the space wolf book with Ragnar gets lost in the under hive of earth trying to fight his way out.
Both new miniatures do look good but not worth getting this boxed set for unless you can manage to buy it in half with some one.
I tend to think that all of these boxed sets should be split. Or you buy it and sell the other half after the fact. I can’t think of many people collecting Custodes who would also need all of the Genestealer Cult. Thankfully, the internet is packed with people willing to share.
Well that’s true.
You’d think an infestation on Holy Terra itself would warrant more than a few throwaway lines on the back of a boxed set… I guess the inquisition were a bit lax at their home office. Didn’t even have anyone available to deal with the threat. Had to send the Emperor’s own bodyguards to do the legwork. Not to mention that the genestealers on Holy Terra are still wearing their deep-space asteroid mining suits, which would stand out like a sore thumb on a planet stripped of all mineable resources for millennia. Regardless of the miniatures, value, rules or anything else,… Read more »
none of the stuff that happens in lore or in their campaigns ever had an impact.
GW is a business.
To expect them to operate with even more than a token bit of respect for their targets is to not understand what a business does.
It sucks … but that’s how it is.
There is soo much potential for great stories and good games if the rules ever were allowed to match the lore. I’ve given up on expecting GW to ever change its ways.
It’s better for my sanity and blood pressure to just raid the few things I do like for parts …
I know what you are saying, but I’m not entirely convinced. Compare this with GW’s Storm of Chaos. This: A Genestealer Cult infects Holy Terra, threatening the very Throne itself!!! -> Boxed set of repackaged models with a thin pamphlet of throwaway lore, and a pair of new characters clearly just designed for wide release and with no connection to the story Storm of Chaos: Archaon leads his horde against the Empire, culminating in a siege against Middenheim itself!!! -> A massive worldwide campaign. A campaign book introducing several all-new armies. New miniatures that are custom to the story, like… Read more »
Nah, the only difference is that you still think that GW is going to make an effort some day.
I just don’t think that’s possible, unless someone with genuine passion bought GW and forced them to rewrite their rules & associated material.
I for one was glad they nuked the old world … it had become an unmanagable beast.
I keep hoping they do the same to the 40k setting and return with something fresh.
Then again … looking at what AoS has become I kind of doubt a reboot will work.
