Lets just accept GW tries too hard to justify Abaddon failing 12 black crusades and not really (yet) succeeding one, by ultimately killing the eye of terror global campaign fluff (not entirely a bad thing, player campaign generated fluff should not be that grandeur scale). Crusade is a big word in 40k lore equal to what the Emperor did or what the Imperioum did afterwards all giving huge expansions to the Imperioum and eradication of local populations. Giving a character who is already credited with 12 crusades that have in failed retroactively “important” goals achieved while failing them does not… Read more »
Because he’s a cool dude.
Persistent too apparently 😉
The basic flaw of his background falls with his introduction in 2nd edition, 13 was a symbolic number and GW wanted to give him this ominous number for his upcoming crusade, but GW not wanting to change the status quo of the young (then) background did not list any captured imperial territory, likewise battle-fleet Gothic gave him a not really a victory to keep the stale background of the imperioum on the edge of destruction, but not going over. I feel he suffers most from all the adversarial characters from GWs past unwillingness to progress the background, even in the… Read more »
The original eye of terror campaign wasn’t killed off. The fall of Cadia carries on from the end result of the original campaign with a couple of bits altered. It’s just not written very well in the book to make that clearly obvious but that is why so many astartes chapters are devastated and absent from the story. I agree that there is a massive disconnect between the Abaddon they want and what it appears he’s achieved from reading the background. I would recommend reading Talon of Horus by Aaron Dembski-Bowden as this does an excellent job of building him… Read more »
That was supposed to be the first book in a trilogy and I can’t wait for the next two. Gave a really interesting look at fluff that’d been skipped over before.
fucking persistent I’d say
Well, time doesn’t pass normally in the Eye. So, Abbaddon has been alive for over ten thousand years and it’s really important to have something to occupy your mind over those long weekends. 😉
What’s wrong with masturbation?
Might work for us mortals, Abbaddon has the whole claw thing holding him back though 😉
Really enjoying these shows guys. I dont play 40k (or have any interest in starting to play) but I love the depth of story and background lore. The series you did on orks was what made me sign up to backstage many months ago. Looking forward to hearing more as the plot unfolds 🙂
Only one question – what’s the proper way to pronounce Cadia?
Lemon Russ *chuckles*
massive thank you for this many moons ago when I and others of a certain age got into tabletop gaming gw was really the only real entry point into the hobby .however could never really get my head round 40k background it was so random and all over the place and at times unless you really knew your 40k lore appeared contradictory. But with the clock now ticking in the 40k world it really is a good time to jump in and concentrate on the present 40k fluff going forward ,time to dust of my sisters painting project and get… Read more »
Well we already know a little more about what GW is doing with the story line they have really made life harsh for the Eldar, in that three craft worlds are not doing so well after the birth of a new Eldar god. The perpetual loser in the realm of the Eldar Ahriman is looking to bring back the Thousand Sons, and surprise surprise his plan didn’t work through force though perhaps he may end up working with this new Eldar faction. So that is the 30 second version of 10 page version of new history, but it opens more… Read more »
Sounding interesting. Hoping Leman Russ comes out dragging Corvus Corax with him. Corvus hopefully learned he was tricked, so with his knowledge from his father, could possibly rebuild legions.
For morale the loss of Cadia is terrible. loosing the best defended plantet close to the eye of terra is really bad as well. What that means for a threat to Terra I have no idea.. other than Terra is quite far away 🙂 For total troop numbers, supply and stuff Cadia really doesnt matter. its a few million guardsmen gone out of the untold billions that serve the empire. And supply have been going to Cadia.. not away from there. its a planet of soldiers.. Not a forge world. I love that GW is finally moving the lore forward… Read more »
Guess my Guard Regiment has lost their home world for good..
Bah..no matter. So least they’ve got something in comman now with the Tanith First and Only!!
Always a joy to watch the show 😎
Interestingly, these story “moves” have peaked my interest in GW more than anything they have tried to do in the past 10 years.
Fantstic stuff … and thanks for the Podcast version , I will get great use out of this
abaddon (a bad un?)he may be joining forces with the tyranids?
I really enjoy this show, I’m not too keen on the GW games, but I’ve always loved the novels (and Space Hulk admittedly). Keep up the great work fellas!
Enjoying the new show
I think Abaddon is in the Book of Revelations or at least the Thomas Gospel – Spoiler Alert 🙂
he commands angry hornets coming from Hell 🙁
is his main Heresy model still the one from the 90s? – I put a Phoenix Lord next to a new Deathwatch marine and the 90s figures are very small and unimpressive next to the latest 40k 🙁
Maybe people have mixed bits (sword and claw) with the Forgeworld miniature – going to google it now…
My 40K Abbaddon combines old metal claw and sword with newer plastic terminator lord. Looks awesome if I do say so myself. Maybe one day I will get round to painting him.
About time GW made a new Abbaddon mini though.
Pretty sure we will see new Phoenix Lord minis soon. Im sure I saw a Jain Zar on a book cover somewhere on a pre release list 🙂
I mean the 40k model is from the 1990s and the 30k Heresy model is Forgeworld and larger-scale (but the wrong weaponry for 40k)??
Great show, bring on the rest! 🙂
