New 40k Astra Militarum Hit Games Workshop Pre-Orders
April 5, 2014 by brennon
Games Workshop's new Astra Militarum is getting it's codex next week and in addition to that and the Order Cards they have put the Wyvern and Hydra up as well. See what you think of some of their new collections.
First up is of course the Codex for the newly revamped Astra Militarum followed by the Order Cards that you'll be using to make sure your Guardsmen do exactly what you want them to do. I'm quite a fan of the artwork for the cover and the Order Cards have a nice look to them too much like their Psychic Power Cards have always done.
One of the surprising additions was this combined pack of Cadian Armour Fist soldiers alongside their ride, a trusty Chimera. At the price it's set at this isn't actually that bad a buy in my opinion (although I'm sure some people will disagree) but it does essentially make the right team you need with no fuss.
Of course you also have the Wyvern and Hydra that we mentioned earlier which will be used for taking down aerial units and infantry. Both fine looking tanks and a great step in the right direction away from those strange Taurox vehicles the Militarum Tempestus have.
Last but not least we have a sneaky peek of an upcoming miniature. It looks to be another one of their plastic clamp packs and features the new Commissar with plasma pistol and power sword. Once again this isn't a bad model at all and somewhat mirrors the look of the Commissar on the front cover.
Will you be starting up an Astra Militarum army?

Got my pre-order in for the codex and order cards in, now all i can do bury my head in the sand, wait, and try to ignore any further rumours about the new book until it drops on my doorstep.
Good God another foot on rock pose. Sorry commissar but I will be fleeing from you this round.
A few years ago you could get Chimera and 10 men for £25…
Those were the good old times
Had to laugh when i saw they are still trying to sell the old plastic catatchan minis … truly atrocious looking minis at premium price.
£5 off the Cadian Armour Fist if you bought them separately, fair enough. Probably not enough to make people auto-buy or actually buy more than they need, but scraps from the Longshanks table is always welcome.
That plastic Commissar does not look pleasing at all. Ignore the paint job, he looks like he’s having a gay old time with his Harlequin pals. (could just be the angle)
Ordered the Codex. I will need to read it before i decide on any purchases.
Dear GW. Its the Imperial Guard. The End 🙂
I hope that Commissar is a plastic rather than finecast kit.
No new failcast releases anymore from what I’ve read a couple of months ago.
I take it the sales dropped when that stuff came out.
So how long do people think it will take before the name Imperial Guard is truly replaced within our vocabulary with this Astra Militarum. I think a very long time. After all IG just rolls off your tongue so much easier. Heck I need to go to a Games Workshop and ask one of the handy staff members how to properly pronounce this new name as well as the unit names in this codex.
I can understand why GW have renamed but I do think they could have come up with something a little more fluid sounding.
Astra Militarum doesnt really shorten down to anything either… Astra? Militarum? The AM?
Never understood the desire to dumb down language by abbreviating everything @solar
@manpug Astra Militarum is dog Latin, you pronounce it like Latin ie stressing the second to last syllable.
I didn’t vote you down but there is nothing to ‘understand’, Astra Militarum is a mouthful no two ways about it.
I bet even you will get sick and tired of saying “Astra Militarum” everytime you need to refer to them 😉
@solar I already don’t enjoy saying Astra Militarum because I don’t much like the name. I think I’ll probably just called them The Militarum – it’s the Astra part which offends.
Wow @erastus this helps and does sound better in dog Latin. Just one question. When did dogs learn to speak Latin.
About the same time that cod did, seeing that it’s also known as cod Latin – not to be confused with pig Latin which is something entirely different.
Is their HQ on the planet ‘Vauxhall’?
