I like the idea of having the 2 different types of suits split across the armies as I think it will balance out the benefits and flaws of each type.
I don’t think it’s “wrong’ to have a unit of each in each army. Many of the chapters would have received much of the same equipment as it was rolled out of the factories (except near the end of the Crusade when Horus was yet to reveal his treachery, having all the best/ newest equipment diverted to his and his allies armies). It is my plan to have both styles in my DA army eventually. Many only “concern” is regarding the Tartaros armour included in those box sets: aren’t they pre-made with Thousand Sons details? The FW variety are more… Read more »
I would probably do 10 Cataphractii for the Space Wolves and 10 Tartaros for the Thousand sons, otherwise battles might be a bit generic, but as a painting exercise 5 & 5 is more interesting to do.
For Tartaros, I’ve got 6 Blood Angels, 5 Thousand Sons, for Cataphractii, 6 Imperial Fists an Probably 6 Alpha Legion ( not got that far yet)!
There are no legion Markings on the Tartaros Terminators (olny Azhek Ahriman and Geigor Fell-Hand have legion Markings in the Prospero Box and the 2 HQs in the Calth box son’t have legion Markings)
I’d personally go with one style for each. Cata for Wolves, Tartaros for 1K Sons. I think the smooth panels of the tartaros pattern armour suits the thousand sons much more.
I pretty much see it the same way as @immortalkris
But really there is no harm in one of each for both armies. Helps with balance if nothing else!
Good show guys, a little bit off topic always is good fun!
In 40k the wolf guard are the only ones that have access to terminator armour. However wolf guard are also the “sergeant” for a group of blood claws, grey hunters or whatever. The basic role of the wolf guard is to serve as the personal guard to the wolf lord of the company and if the wolf lord would die, a wolf guard will take it’s place and ascent to rank of wolf lord as well.
I think one of each is fine. The legions were absolutely huge, even the Thousand Sons, so you can basically justify anything you want. Love the kit bashing John did, this series is getting me inspired to carry on with my Word Bearers, good job!
In a 40K setting I could see the refined, establishment of stylistic differences of armor becoming more distinct between Chapters.
But in a 30K setting where armor was basically arriving in shipping containers fresh from the forge worlds, I picture it more like an Army Supply System sort of situation.i.e. you get, what you get.
If someone said, “Aw, I like the other style better. Why can’t we have more Cataphractii armor?” They’d get told in short order: “This is what the Emperor sent you. And this is what you’ll use!”
the different terminator suit look great one type would be boring so mix it up a bit making it more realistic getting supplies from passing different forge worlds over time.
Some good examples of custom 30k space wolves here:

Wow! :O
I preferred the original idea of just one armour variant per legion, the way the two models shown have been built. To my mind it helps the forces look like they come from different worlds (which of course they do). Also makes more sense with the play style of the two chapters. The wolves being more agile, the Sons a little harder to take down.
While I get the idea of Tarteros being good for the assault focused Wolves, I admit that mine will be in Cataphracti as it just looks more brutal.
Saying that I’ll probably have units of both in my Word Bearers Legion.
You’re not wearing a tank, as much as you are piloting an Exo suit that has amazing strength and composite armor…. I’d trade in a small tank collection of real world tanks for a suit of TDA!
