Dreadnoughts are awesome. My aim is to eventually have two or three of every variant for my Dark Angels… one day…
Great episode of Warhammer 40k – Charted. I agree with John, I also like the bulky, boxy, “old” Dreadnoughts a lot.
The Castraferrum Pattern dreadnought is the old boxy one – I still prefer the Rogue trader ones though.
Interesting hearing about the different styles of dreadnoughts – but as an an outsider to 30/40k I feel like you missed out on explaining the background behind the dreadnoughts and their pilots.
John alluded to it was a way of heroes being honoured… but nothing more than that. Are they marines who have died, and this is like a life support machine? Is it just their brains that are strapped into this armour…? Or did I just miss all of this info on a previous 40k charted – if so can somebody link me to the episode pls!
The shattered remains of a marines body is interned into the dreadnought chassis and connected to the systems that control it, so yes kind of a life support machine but there’s not much life left in their organic self (Think the humans in the pods from The Matrix with all the cable connections and you’re pretty much there)
ah ok, that makes sense. but i dont get what John was saying how these guys are being “honoured” (in air quotes) suggest that it isnt actually an honour. so what, is it a punishment? I dont get the dichotomy of what’s being said there. One of the great things when Warren and AJ did the show, was that AJ would walk Warren through the entirety of the backstory and lore, as well as discussing game mechanics and whatnot. But the guys here are all in-the-know so even though John starts the video by saying he loves dreadnoughts so much… Read more »
The tale of Bjorn the Fellhanded being wounded in battle and interred in a dreadnought in 934.M31 is covered in the parting of the ways audiobook which is eluded to by the guys.

There was also a charted season 1 video covering Bjorn:

dude, thank you for your link to the Bjorn episode – the guys spent the first chunk of that show explaining the relationship between the dreanought and the person inside it.
Shit… I shouldn’t have watched this… That Heavy Weapon Dreadnought is going to win me over. x.x
Contemptors are great but…. Leviathans, always Leviathans 🙂
My 30K Iron Warriors army has 3 of them and it’s safe to say they are beasts! But you do pay the price for them points-wise at around 330pts each depending on loadouts. In a 3k list I feel dirty taking 2 of them…
a walking bunker what’s not to love about them.
Dreadnoughts are my favourite units too. I have loads of them. Hellbrutes are probably my favourite iteration of them.
Hopefully they won’t be bad in 8th ed like they were in 7th.
Also John, not sure if you saw my comment on the Hobby Night Live so I’ll paste it here as it may be handy:
In terms of painting Thousand Sons, look at the Forgeworld transparent airbrush paints. I am in the process of trying them for Alpha Legion and they are awesome. Also water based so no awful smell.
Red over a gold (GW Retributor armour spray) basecoat should work nicely. Gold gives a warmer basecoat than silver which works better with red. Silver works best with colder colours like blue
