Heroic Lt. Col. Durnford Holds His Own With Wargames Illustrated
July 19, 2016 by brennon
Wargames Illustrated have added another heroic individual to their Giants In Miniature range. Here we have the heroic Lt. Col. Durnford sporting his well used revolver.
So what's the story behind this fellow?
"Whether you consider him an impetuous officer who doomed the British at Isandlwana or a doomed hero in the best Victorian tradition, Lieutenant Colonel Anthony Durnford was an experienced, brave warrior who was loyal to his men and inspired loyalty in others. One of the most iconic portrayals of this historical character can be found in Zulu Dawn, first released in 1979.
Here, Burt Lancaster shines amongst a venerable cast and presents a populist version of Durnford, right down to the last entreaty to pass on a message to his beloved in Natal before turning to lead a ragtag group of men in a Last Stand par excellence.
Our figure depicts this version of Durnford, pistol blazing as the Zulus storm the camp at Isandlwana, choosing to give his life to enable others to flee."
What do you think of this chap?

LTC. Durnford is my favorite character from the movies and in actual person. He knew the land and the Zulu’s and Lord Chelmsford should have taken his advice.
It’s a really nice model. I love the pose, really screams Victorian adventurer and all round hero. Loved the film as well, this is a really nice testament to a forgotten era (what with all the steam punk games out there depicting an alternative 19th century)
Great addition to the range, which I’ve been looking at for some while in wargames illustrated. Now to convince the other half I NEED another model or two…
