God of Battles On the Horizon from Foundry Miniatures

A new wargame is coming from Foundry Miniatures and its Fantasy Line penned by the esteemed Jake Thornton. Easy to learn and quick to play could God of Battles be something interesting to watch out for?
The game takes place in the war ravaged land of Aren and brings in a wide range of different fantasy races as you can see from the images above and below.
The game has a focus on fun and interesting play where each battle tells a story. Narrative games are always a fantastic idea in my opinion so this should a step in the right direction. Some of the models from the Fantasy range by Foundry will be appearing including the Sea Elves...
More details and the rulebook itself are not far away so keep an eye out for the forces of Aren rising up sometime soon. In the mean time go and check out some of the models from the Fantasy Foundry website and dream up some interesting armies to take to war.
What do you make of this upcoming game?
Boy, Aren sure does look like a cruel parody of the Warhammer world.
I’ve been looking forward to this ruleset for a while now and it’s good to see a more narrative driven game coming onto the market. Strange use of Latin on the foundry webpage for it – google translated this: “This is used to obtain here, but because occasionally circumstances occur in which toil and pain, some great pleasure. Your link will be sent to to enjoy a pleasure in the pain, to find fault with in the page.” “Laborious physical… Read more »
Interesting – I’ve seen Foundry’s renaissance orcs unboxed by Darrell and wondered how they could fit in an existing fantasy army, but now they have their own game with new twists on the dress styles usually seen on Tolkienesque races (I especially like the shell-shaped breastplate on the merman). These sculpts aren’t the sharpest but a table with them on will look very different and eye-catching. I’ll be glad to hear more about this game and fluffwise why these forces look as they do.
So far the Orcs are what I like most about this game.
I love the orcs and the paint jobs are great.
The colors seem very retro to me.
They remind me of those old Citadel paint books?
I think that’s what they where from the 1980’s?
Very nice.
Of course, there’s always going to be somebody trying to imply that this or that looks like or is a rip-off of GW. Helps to keep in mind that Foundry was the original “Evil Empire” of the minis world before GW earned that title, largely due to their pricing, and that they have been around since 1976, which makes them in every way contemporary to GW. For that matter, GW started out with mostly board games and licensing from TSR, while Foundry was actually producing more wargame-centric stuff. (I love this site, but come on, guys, GW did not invent… Read more »
