Warbands: Bushido Now On Kickstarter From Red Unit Studios
April 25, 2016 by stvitusdancern
There is an active Kickstarter campaign going on right now for a game called Warbands: Bushido. Now what makes this interesting is two things, first this game is entirely a video game and second I do not think it is associated with the GCT Studios game of the roughly the same name.
In this game which the creators, Red Unit Studios, are claiming is based on the historical feudal Japan era. The game uses recreations of miniatures and dice to manipulate during the game. If you look over the Kickstarter page you will see the pledge goals all look like packaged miniatures. It also has a card mechanic and uses those to determine how many actions you can take during a models activation.
Movement and other game play aspects follow traditional gameplay as if you were playing it on an actual tabletop. Speaking of the table, you will get several different "tables" to play on which all contain different terrain. So far the graphics and miniatures all look pretty good, and the creators are planning further expansions and possibly different genres in the future.
One thing I find troubling, is that there is mention of in game purchases. I have never been a fan of those type of games and if I am going to back a project for a decent level, I do not thinks the game should have additional in game purchasing. I am ok with buying expansions, but all the nickel and diming gets tiring quickly.
What do you think about this game?

I think I’d rather just get the minis and play a proper table-top game. Don’t see the point of this computer game to be honest
What about people who just don’t have time for it? You have to buy minis, paint them, build a terrain, and so on..
People can decide for themselves it’s a free world. What I don’t get is why have the graphics as miniatures rather than actual people? Seems a bit daft – but each to their own. Not for me
Looks interesting.
Looks promising but I’m not willing to take the plunge on Kickstarter computer games. Too easy for them to fall by the wayside.
In App/Game purchases always make me nervous. In my experience it often leads to ‘pay-to-win’ situations. I’d rather pay for the full game up front.
It is nothing to do with GCT and the Bushido tabletop minis game… Trademark wise if this was just a video-game I wouldn’t see an IP conflict – but the portrayal of miniatures puts it into the area of encroachment of trademark and passing off. The fact you had to mention the confusion says it all!
I suspect legal advice may be being sought.
