Urban War: One Of The Best Games You’re Not Playing
January 29, 2014 by crew
Every now and again you come across a game that you really enjoy, but it doesn’t seem to capture critical mass and gain many players. For many miniature games, this means that they are a brief flare in the night – pretty but short-lived and rapidly forgotten.
Other games just refuse to let you go, and, by luck or other happenstance, they remain in print and viable for a long time when other games would have just faded away. Over its nearly ten years of release, Urban War is that sort of game. It’s never been a big hit, and some days it’s hard to even find gamers who have heard of it – but every time I’ve taught someone the game, they’ve really enjoyed it and want to play it again. I think if you haven’t tried it, it’s very possibly one of the Best Games You’re Not Playing.
Urban War Strike Team Actions 2nd Edition by Urban Mammoth is a fast-paced game of deadly skirmish encounters in Iskandria, the metropolis of the Tyrant. In the game universe, the Tyrant Iskander ruled over 33 worlds, and his aggression forced the hand of the Tripartite Powers – the Junkers, Virdians, and Syntha – to band together a massive military show-of-force and cast him down. Several years have passed since Iskander’s empire has toppled from power, and now, on the world of Kyklops, home of the legendary metropolis Iskandria – where we set the scene – the voracious aliens called the Koralon have laid siege to this planet and trapped the fractious powers there into an all-out struggle for survival and control.
The Factions
Let’s take a look at the factions fighting for this prized planet:
The Viridians – the most baseline, “normal” faction, the Viridians have tried to bring peace and tranquility to Iskandria, only to watch it burn in the madness of war. Still their well-equipped and well trained forces help them hang on in the raging battles for the city and its dwindling resources.
The Gladiators – nominally allied with the Junkers, the Gladiators are bloodied warriors – the winners and survivors, anyway – who now fight in the countless skirmishes across the planet. They specialize in close-combat, flashy fighting, and they bring fire and beasts to entertain the crowds and crush their enemies.
The Junkers – cruel slavers, the Junkers enforce harsh discipline on their own troops – what does that leave for their enemies? They send waves of poorly trained Legionaries to solve problems, because life is cheap for the Junkers, and their foes can’t afford the butcher’s bill.
The Syntha - Cyborgs and walking AIs, the Syntha were once human but now have embraced the machine. They have the highest tech and very little compassion or morality to stop them from using it. Facing the Syntha is to see the synthesis of man and machine – and be found wanting.
The Triads – The criminal underground of Iskandria has risen up to carve out its own safety zones in the interesting times up on their world. They have embraced VASA as an ally but one mostly of convenience. They still operate in the shadows with precision over brute force, and it has allowed them to survive when so many have fallen.
VASA – the intergalactic police, VASA has viewed the conflict on Iskandria with alarm and some impotency – cut off from their fleets and reinforcements, the scattered VASA forces on Iskandria have been forced to try and keep order when fear and madness reign.
The Koralon - Aliens who wage war against humanity, it is the Koralon that have cut off Iskandria from the rest of the galaxy and whose coralline-warping powers threatens to engulf humanity for their own twisted hybrid army.
And finally, the latest faction to join the conflicts:
The NEO-ISKANDRIANS – the return of Iskander the Tyrant, for whom the planet is named. The Neo-Iskandrians have been hiding in cryosleep in the reaches of space, biding their time, and have now returned to Iskandria when the world is at its most vulnerable and ripe for re-conquest. Led by the Tyrant himself, can any stand in their way?
Which Faction?
Urban War 2nd edition has been out for a few years now and is a very tight system for sci-fi skirmish warfare. The rules for the game – available in quickstart format HERE are easy to pick up and most gamers will be up in running in minutes with the quickstart rules. The game is d10 based, giving you reasonably easy math for chances of success. Armies in the game rarely rise above 15 models per side, making it easy to get into the game cheaply, and for collectors like me, amass multiple armies remarkably fast (Personally, I have six armies for Urban War).
Each faction in Urban War is unique in theme and play style. No matter what your preferred play style – aggressive assaults? Ranged dominance? Sneaky and stealthily? All-rounded? – there is an army in Urban War for you.
ALL ROUNDERS: Viridians, Triads
AGGRESSIVE ASSAULT: Gladiators, Junkers, Koralon
MOBILITY: VASA
RANGED SUPERIORITY: Syntha, Neo-Iskandrians
But even in these buckets there are plenty of options. Each faction has some capability for everything. Where Viridians aren’t the strongest in assaults, they do have their SHOCK MARINES with Vibro-Scythe and Negatron shields, great for counterassaults or even to give your preferred opponent a big surprise when you play a radically different list.
Coming soon for Urban War will be CLAU-TEAM ACTIONS 2.0, an update on the add-on rules for adding large stompy walkers (some are mecha, some are just really big, ornery beasts! ) to your games. CLAU stands for Capital Light Armoured Unit, and effectively these let you add walking tanks to your army. These have been missing from Urban War for a while, so if you are a fan of the big stompy walker aesthetic , you’ll be pleased to have them back in.
So that’s a quick look at Urban War 2.0. It’s one of my favorite games, and I hope you’ll give a look. The Quickstart Rules are a great way to get a solid grip on the gameplay, and the starter boxes give you an excellent selection of models to get up and running with the game easily. Join the conflict!

Having just finished editing this for the site and taking a look over the Urban War miniatures I have to say that then Syntha have pretty much won me over as a faction. I am in a bit of a Cyberpunk/Tech-Noir phase at the moment and some of their models are absolutely ace.
BoW Ben
Thanks Ben 😉
This has been around for a long time. I think it used to be called VOID 1.1 and I think you can still get the original faction minis from Scotia Grendel? Correct me if wrong. I’ve never played it but i’ve always liked the minis, though never been blown away by them like INFINITY. Still, some of them are really great though and I really like the Triads and VASA and the core Viridian troopers are very cool. I could be tempted to have a go!
You’re right about Void, and I can only agree about the Viridians: they’re some very pretty models! One of the nice things about Urban War is that you can build a perfectly playable army without breaking the bank, making it a very easy game to get into. 🙂
I absolutely love this game and I have to say it is one of the best games I have ever played!!!! I own four factions including their CLAUs and demo teams for all of the rest. The Gladiators are my favorite.
Thanks trideau, much appreciate the support mate, cheers
The Triads are my fave model range from this game. 🙂 Those Kabuki Dolls would be great in any Sci-Fi or Fantasy setting.
this certainly looks interesting… time to chuck it at my club me thinks 😀
If any of you folks want a gander at the rules we’ll send you a free PDF copy, simply email me at [email protected]
Tell your mates too 🙂
Void 1.1 was system on the level with 40K. Urban war is skirmish system in same universe. Rules are different.
I used to play Void 1.1 when it was owned by I-Kore. Never really got into Urban War. Pretty much the only similarity between Void and Urban War are the faction names. They completely re-imaged the game, the universe, and the factions. I played Syntha and didn’t really like the redesign that Urban Mammoth did, but to each their own. Scotia Grendel does still sell the Void 1.1 miniatures if you want to compare them to the Urban Mammoth line.
I have tons of VASA and Triads models and a couple rulebooks from my efforts to move the game at conventions where I was selling. Very little luck — gamers can be quite stubborn about giving the lesser-known games a chance.
I’ve since put my business on hold. Thinking of just keeping all that stuff and making my game group play it with me.
Big fan of the Triads, especially. The Kabukis are amazing, but I really dig those cyborg Sumo.
Many thanks for the review Robert, and thanks for all the positive comments folks 🙂
We are currently developing 2nd edition CTA at the moment to bring the big manned ‘bots into 2nd Edition Urban War, feel free to dive in on our FB page for previews and new releases.

Thanks and again!
I at one time played this game frequently, at least Void that is. Then the company went bust and nobody would touch it not even shops. Never really knew what happened, wish I did.
The company is not bust – the makers of VOID, I-KORE, really came Urban Mammoth, and they transitioned from the more squad-based VOID to the more skirmish-y URBAN WAR.
Of course if you still prefer squad based, they have the METROPOLIS ruleset, which uses the URBAN WAR minis in bigger units.
I’ve always had a soft-spot for the generally little-known Void and Urban War ranges, from the slightly pulpy excesses of the Void range to the much more grim dark appearances of things like the Triad Sumos – although I’ve never had a chance to play either games.
Great to read that the full VOID range is still available through Scotia Grendel, I had thought for years that they’d possibly vanished into the aether for good.
I love this game some of the models arnt the best out there but the rules are awesome
It’s a game I’ve known about for a good while but it never really appealed, plus the minis do look a bit dated to me. However, will check out the QSR…and the new faction does look pretty sharp 🙂
Just email me at [email protected] and I’ll fire you a PDF copy of the ruleset, cheers
Got ’em already ta 🙂
…just need to find the time to read ’em 😀
I watch Urban War on Facebook as some of the models they release are amazing, they are not all to my liking but I’m sure other people like those I don’t and the quality levels are ace.
Great article, if someone could find me some spare time I’d love to give the game a go. You’ve put some of the great models I see in to context. 🙂
as above drakependragon, drop me an email [email protected] and we’ll get you a PDF copy of the rules.
Thanks for all the interest folks, cheers
I can highly recommend this game to anyone. As a player, demo guy and tournament organiser I’ve discovered that Urban War is a quick to learn, but difficult to master game that provices great tactical and strategic play. With the CTA add-on it gives even more ways of playing, so I can’t wait for the 2nd Edition of CTA to hit the (virtual) shelves!
Oh, and not to forget, it’s one model activation per round insures that it is great for multi-player games.
Cheers 😀
If you enjoyed the first CLAU Team Actions, I’m confident that you’ll enjoy CTA 2nd Edition: CLAUs are as powerful as ever, but far from invulnerable, particularly with the additional sneaky we’re adding to help you bring them down. 😉
I’ve been playing this for years. It really is excellent. The levels of attrition in the average game are great; you have to be really careful with cover and positioning or your soldiers will die like flies. It reminds me a lot of X-com.
I prefer this game to infinity as it doesn’t require constant rules checking and the overwatch mechanics require thought and expenditure of resouces as opposed to being automatic. The CLAUs are fantastic too, very fun to paint and very straightforward to assemble.
I’ve got every force but the Koralon
🙂
I have been playing Urban War since it was released. I think this article is one of the best explanations of the factions i have ever seen.
this is indeed one of my favorite games. it is fast paced and fun, with true alternating activations and a d10 mechanic that is very smooth.
This is one of my all time favourite games, I have small selection of syntha, a mix of vasa/triads, some viridians and a nice range of junkers/gladiators. have played this for a number of years on and off. Ive been fortunate enough to do demo’s and introduce new players to the delights of Urban War. There is nothing more satisfying than seeing a new player get how the game works after only a couple of moves and then goes on to enjoy the chaos, the mayhem and the slaughter thats all part of the fun of Urban War. My favourite… Read more »
If you like Pit Beasts, you’ll love Broccha and Viscera, the Gladiators’ Giant Pit Beast Ace. Broccha confers a command bonus to all the Pit Beasts within a 9″ radius of her, and makes them even more prone to launch into berserk charges of the enemy line: chaotic, unpredictable, but scary to face!
Again many thanks for all the positive feedback, much appreciated 😀

Cheers fella for the kind words. We’ve been trying for a while now with the BoW staff but alas with no luck 🙁
If you can do a video do one with the gladiators and what soever faction you so choose to pit against them ;D
