And so tales were told of a show called The Weekender! Many tales were told of men from the Emerald Isle sitting down to discuss the news of the week. And then we threw in some toilet jokes just because we could.
This week we discuss that awesome Infinity Iguana, the ace terrain from Battle Systems and Dropzone Commander launching soon with their two player set.
As well as that we have some Games Day chatter and our game of the weekend this time is Relic!

Happy Gaming!
Is it just me or is this video not allowed full screen?
Ignore that – now getting full-screen via YouTube!
Yeah, no full screen on the BoW site and no close cam this episode either. Guess they needed to get it done and out to Games Day. 🙂 Kind of a downer episode with a fail ‘Game of the Weekend’ and what seemed like a forced reentry into GW products. Eh, I could just be way off the mark though.
It’s good to know. I was tempted by Relics but finding out that players are pretty much passengers helps keep my hobby cash saved over for something more worthy.
It looks very shiny indeed but I need there to be a good game to back that up.
it was a rendering snafu, iced now.
It wasn’t a forced GW anything, relic simply caught me out, as I was fully expecting to enjoy it, and some weeks I only get one shot at selecting a game of the weekend.
Then after playing, all I could do was just… be honest about it, it’s got a lot of cool stuff in the box, but as board games go, it’s really lacking.
But zombie dice… Well that’s a little tub of win!
Though I did like the zombie dice game.
I agree with Warren – when it come to Relic/Talisman it is all random
Just watched the weekender, in my hotel, round the corner from the nia. Roll on gamesday!!
Watched the weekender had a nap and woke up and it was gone. Now its back and I thought it was a dream.
You are still dreaming huscarle. It has all been a dream. There is no BoW.
Well if it was a dream I think I may have had a great idea for web site
I just so happen to have a couple ideas of website names…how about Animals of War? Maybe Beasts of Conflict?
Thought the Relics Game of the Week was hilarious. A good ten or more minutes going on by the game only to end with “it kinda sucks.”
I’ve been enjoying the variety that has been showing up on BoW in the past couple of months. After having played my first game of Bushido about a week ago I’d like to see GCT getting a little bit more love than just showing up on the breaking news on occasion. It’s a good game and the models are very nice.
Talisman is rubbish, always has been. It’s a glorified game of Monopoly. I played Relic once because a friend bought it and wanted a game but it’s every bit as bad as Talisman.
The poor quality of creative writing is something which plagues our industry. There are some incredibly gifted sculptors, artists, and painters, but the writing is almost all rubbish. A lot of it isn’t anything more than fan fiction. I can barely bring myself to read fluff anymore.
Bit of a negative start to this comment lol. Great show again, enjoy Games Day 🙂
When it comes to world building I find the fluff tends to be pretty good. While it may be dry at times game creators are great at crafting a world’s politics, ecology, economy, etc. But when it comes to actual stories…yeah, I have to agree. I’ve been reading the older Malifaux books before diving into 2ed so as to catch up with the events and it has been pretty groan-inducing at times. Seems like every time Perdita or Lady Justice shows up the writer has a taken a moment to describe how curvy their bodies are. *facepalm* Creative writing has… Read more »
Malifaux is amongst the worst offenders because it fills its expansions with it. I got about a third of the way into the 2nd book and couldn’t go any further. It was awful. I’m pretty certain most of it is actually just fan fiction. The Black Library books might be hackwork but at least that assumes a certain level of ability. I agree that when it comes to non-creative writing, the gaming industry can put out some good stuff. And given that it’s a niche industry offering low-paying, licensed work, it’s never going to attract top talent. It’s just a… Read more »
Heh, yeah. PIP is a really good example of what you are talking about. When it comes to the background it feels like it was written by history majors. So long as you can accept the fantasy elements it all feels rather real. The way the politics play out, the tensions between various groups, how detailed they will get down to various fashions, languages, and customs. But when it gets to the fluff it feels like…it was written by history majors, in that they may have taken a single creative writing course in college to get a couple of credits.… Read more »
Great show, I was undecided whether or not to get relic myself so that was really helpful.
Whew this got here just in time! The inlaws are here in force and I’m not sure I was going to make it without the Weekender!
Persoanlly i’ve always though the Talisman style of gameplay was a bit rubbish.
One game they could have based Relics gameplay on is Arkham Horror. (Now there’s a game that would challenge Warrens explaining skills. lol)
Admitedly it’s a bit of a complicated game that takes forever to play. But it’s a great cooperative game once you get to grips with it.
zombie dice is such an amazing game and you can pick it up in waterstones, the real skill is getting 13 brains in one go, i have done it once
About the Horus heresy, loken doesn’t actually dies. In one of the Garro audiobooks he scavanges the istavaan battlefield as a nutter and gets a chance to take revenge for the emperor.
Picked Zombie Dice along with DreadBall today, already playing Zombie dice with the whole family and will work out “drinking game” rules later lol
Zombie Dice is great fun! There’s a version of it as an App for the iPad. For only 0.99$, you can play on the same tablet with as much as 10 players. A quick to learn game and everybody who tried it with me totally loved it.
Great show guys!
Hey guys just wanted to say thanks. I got my copy of Drop Zone Commander on Friday. It was great and have already played 2 games. Your prior shows are what decided me to take the plunge and pre-order it.
It’s Talisman in Space. I hated Talisman, I can see me hating this.
By “It” I refer to Relic!
Good show 🙂
The relic busts are indeed a really great addition to the game as I have also seen them up close and drooled for a long time. It’s just a pity that the game is not a great addition to itself, lol. Zombie dice is great as a warm up game for others.
So it’s really just Talisman with new trappings? Quite frankly, I think Talisman makes more sense in a fantasy setting. We really loved Talisman and played it lots — in the 80’s. It’s an 80’s game design, it’s not supposed to be highly tactical. It’s random zanyness with people turning into frogs and stuff, not tournament chess.
Maybe I should dig it up…
I like Talisman!
