Water Effects… Brand New from Basecrafts
January 13, 2012 by beerogre
The guys at Basecrafts have just launched a new Water Effects product... check out their video and see what you think.
If you're on their website, you'll also see they're running a sale. So now's a good time to stock up on your basing needs for the year.
Looks like you forgot to link the video in the article.
Is linked now Chevvers 😉
Looks handy, have been wanting some good water effects for basing without paying lots for big bottles
Seems a handy method.
Whoops… I’ve fixed the link. 😉
Hmm, just looks like high gloss shellac over blue paint. Needs texture and depth. Could just be they need some help on the undercoat, but in my opinion, a clear acryilic glossy coating over paint is not water effect, just a clear shell – like a coating of clear plastic, over the paint. Not much additional info on the Basecrafts site. Wonder if you can shade it with inks or pigments?
Water effect is handy as I have come to experience.
It is “Water Effect”, and not just a gloss varnish (wish it were the stuff is expensive to source whereas gloss varnish is cheap 🙂 ). The water effect is designed for thin layer use, i.e. to make something underneath look like water/swamp, etc. Its not a deep resin, so while it will layer to some extend (with adequate drying time) if you want deep water you’ll need to go with clear resin. The bases were a little rushed unfortunately so they dont really show it off to its full effect, we’ll be redoing alot of the samples and videos… Read more »
I always found these water effects products a bit confusing myself. I mean what do they do that clear resin can’t? Do they produce natural ripple effects when they dry? It’s a little hard to see things like that in the video. Please note this isnt a crit of the product (and others like GW’s own one) merely honest curiousity 🙂
If your happy using clear resin, you’ll probably always get a more flexible product, as in depth, however a lot of people want an easy to use product straight from the bottle, a lot of the resin water effect require pre-mixing carefully.
You can manipulate the water effect as it dries as little, i.e using say a cocktail stick to create a ripple effect, but in general our products are for simple use in armies, i.e. quick and easy to achieve a reasonable water effect.
I use a product called living water I get from hobby lobby its about 27 bucks here for a huge bottle. After a while it gets rather messy. I like the idea of deep dish bases and smaller eye droppers. This is what will cut the mess down as well as the price good find I think…
BoW stay on the hunt 🙂
