VLOG: D&D Display Dungeon Part #1 | Warren’s Plan #DungeonBuild
July 21, 2020 by warzan
Warren is getting creative with us today and delving into a new VLOG series where he tracks the building of his epic 28mm D&D (Dungeons & Dragons) Display using the Archon Studio Dungeons & Lasers Dungeon Plastic Set of tabletop scenery terrain for use with your miniatures.

We start with some design basics and work out how it's going to look when it's finally down on the tabletop. If you were to make a dream set of 28mm tabletop dungeon scenery or a diorama for Dungeons & Dragons; how would you approach it? Would it be with one of these plastic dungeon sets to suit your miniatures?

https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4460474 this ones more for the kids right at the bottom of the dungeon you could perhaps let them paint or choose a colour scheme for the cerberus doghouse. Harry Potter had one called fluffy wasnt it? then you have something from the kids incorporated into it for all eternity Andreas got to like that idea.
so looking forward to the rest of this build

ive been slowly getting ideas together of my own for similar project was going for a wooden frame with printed skins maybe some etched mdf a slow wintertime task
Looking forward to following this amazing quest of yours… you must add IED lights Warren… if the top level was a ruined church, you could light up the stain glass windows….. flicking touches as i saw the wall holes in your video…
Or maybe some purple lights deeper down… a green glowing slime pool ? and for standard effects, cotton wool spider webs…!!!!
I paused the video at 13:00 to write this..went back into the front room.. 8 seconds later you talked about it..!!!! 🙂
lol awesome
A great way to display some minis….I may have to pinch the idea from you at some point to display mine in the hobby room. I’ll be following this blog with interest.
This will be epic! Glad you mentioned Terrain Crate too, it’ll really add depth. I think the new Archon KS has half-height wall tiles, so you can make the larger themed rooms as 1.5-2 tiles high to add to the grandeur and make them ‘boss’ rooms. I’ve got Dungeon Saga and the expansions, I can just see the one diorama with a few different dungeons, themed with different types of baddies/bosses (undead, orcs/goblins, abyssals, dragons hoarding gold, etc). Also have a surface level, with entrances, maybe with entrances such as ‘X’ marks the spot (queue Indiana Jones). This will be… Read more »
Lovely Ideas!
@warzan what a fab idea, I got shed loads of that dungeons and lasers stuff myself from the Kickstarter so I am going to watch this with interest.
One question if you are stacking the levels you need dungeons ceiling/roof and the floor pieces have all the clips showing how will you disguise these?
Not sure yet – all part of the discovery process 🙂
Why didn’t you check out Fat Dragon Games’ dungeon tile system, buy they’re sets, have Justin print them on an FDM and assemble those. They even have dungeon wall pieces with torches etc. that can take LED lights.
That would have been a lovely way to go as well 🙂 – But would have added significantly to the timescales 🙂
You have a Justin that has the ability to not break things but build them and not hurt himself in the process. The issue with putting three of those together is the middle section. The weight of the project is going to drag it all down. If you were using one piece of wood for the bottom instead of trying to cobble separate ones it’d be easier. It comes down to the force (gravity) that you’re working against. Stone archways work with individual pieces because of the spreading out stress but the whole thing might sag unless bracketed. You might… Read more »
“Darling, I want to build a dungeon in the living room”
You definitely have a keeper when they say, yes!
That’s kind of an early relationship defining/breaking moment, in my opinion.
or maybe she thinks he won’t get it finished in a decade 😉
Ooooh, this instantly made me think of the Squats v Space Orks diorama on the back of the old citadel painting guide, and the Advanced Heroquest one that was on the box or something (can’t quite remember where it was, but it was cool!)!
I love this idea!
What a wonderful idea for sharing your creative passion as well as hard work. A big bonus is your kids get to see the stuff and interact safely (for the minis). Very excited to follow this project through. I heartily recommend the Mantic Terrain Crate pieces as they have enough detail for character but are still easy to paint.
@warzan you’ve got to put a tavern in there somewhere, that’s where every food RPG starts!
Very nice idea, the opportunities to hide wee Easter eggs throughout it are endless. Looking forward to watching this project
I got my double pack clipped and painted in a week and my hands were in ruins. Its a great set though, ive got a five story dwarf hotel for my party sitting on my coffee table.
awesome idea …
Wonderful idea. A little time invested in placing magnets throughoutthe build means you could always swap some scenic elements around while also being secure. Especially applies to the more focal points of the dungeon.
This is a great idea. One thing I’d do is play with depth – have some rooms do back further than others, especially on the same level. You’ll lose some space to display minis but have it look less like a box on the wall.
Good luck Warran, great project! I think you need some light in there!
Sounds like an awesome project.
On a practical note, do Ikea do any glass doors for those cabinets – if it’s open fronted you will get dust settling on all your minis and the scenery and spoiling it.
Dust is exactly what you need in an old dirty dungeon!
Sounds great an will be following with interest if you are considering building the units in a block you should consider doweling them all to each other to strength the display Warren.
Happy project @warzan ! I’ll be following this and also “stealing” some ideas… I do have a small display library for my painted minis but, it’s flat and you can’t really see the minis in the back… Rather than simply add a few small boxes, i think i’ll be adding a bit of display!
These just arrived on my doorstep last week and this was part of my plan to show them off.
Personally I think the Hemnes line would be better instead of trying to put three of those other units together.

I know you already have them but maybe they can be of use in the studio instead.
I’m most impressed by your wife letting you do this. I think if I tried this, I’d just get a look.
And please include the blood beast, no dungeon is complete without one.
Wished i had a wife like your @warzan, wont to swap for mine (she makes good cakes) she does not allow hobby anywhere but in the hobby area.
I have an idea for one of your room`s, wont say what just yet. I first need to find the piece i have, that will fit in nicely and give the dungeon some character. Liking the whole idea of what your doing, multi layered dungeons maybe the future.
