Tackle An Urban Wasteland With Deep-Cut Studio’s New Mat
July 26, 2015 by brennon
After scratching my head over just how on earth to build a nice gaming table this weekend I turned back to Deep-Cut Studios and I'm increasingly thinking that gaming mats are the way forward. See what you think of their newest piece which is for an Urban Wasteland...
This urban landscape looks like it would fit in nicely with a range of different Modern, Historical and Sci-Fi settings. I could easily see this being the site of an industrial complex during the Gulf War, or the outskirts of a ruined town in the likes of DUST.
Combine this mat with some scatter terrain to make it so any buildings you put down aren't so starkly 'set against it' and you'd have an awesome table I reckon. If you were working on anything to fit the style of Fallout then this could match very nicely too.
What do you think of gaming mats?

That ain’t bad for 40 quid. If you can’t afford 40 quid, its obviously bad.
The pound is about 13.5 sek atm so no more deep cuts for a while .. the cloth mats are damn nice, not necessary of course but good to theme a table quickly
Anyone have experience with their PVC mats? Do they slip? Are they glossy? Do they crease easily?
Ive heard the pvc can be a bit on the glossy side, depending on lighting too of course but yeah
The PVC ones are pretty good. I have 2 for Malifaux. Badlands and Swamp ones. Detail looks great and they are not really glossy at all. They are surprisingly thin though (I expected them to be a lot thicker) but that hasn’t been a problem at all.
I take only the really thick mats have 3D elements to them? This still looks great however!
It would be nice if they offered that mouse mat material as well. I’ve found my gaming mats from Mantic to be fantastic and would love a couple in 6’x4′.
I have a 6′ by 4′ cobblestone pvc mat and its nice, mines not that glossy and the details are crisp.
I’ll second what Zethnar and core8ball said. Our club recently bought a few of these mats, the cloth ones, and they really are good. The cobble stone one is particularly nice and I also wish they offered the designs in the heavier mousemat-type neoprene but thats just me. For the price they are excellent value for money and we’ve not regretted buying them.
Gaming mats are a great ‘invention’ for gaming. Had a few made at a local printers. Mouse-mat type material and you just roll it away. Doesn’t crease and can be done in matt – 48″x48″ and has a bit of change out of £20.
However, I am do like the ones from Microarts – much better designs. @deaddave is right – it’s ok if you have conkers.
What sort of shops print on big mouse mat stuff?
