Spartan Move To 20 Days Left For Their Modular Terrain Kickstarter!
February 14, 2015 by brennon
Spartan Games, or more specifically Spartan Scenics, are moving towards the next big number, twenty, in days left on Kickstarter for their Modular Terrain. See what you think of it...
Their idea was to create some hard wearing and modular scenery that could be used for a myriad of different time periods, realms and more...
- Scale - the project starts at 28mm scale, but will grow to embrace any scale we want!
- High quality - as you have come to expect from Spartan Games.
- Flexible - designed to be built both vertically and horizontally, allowing you to build rooms, corridors and towers. You will also be able to create bridges between floors, towers, mezzanines and balconies. Use your imagination to also make arches, windows and doorways.
- Requires no glue - components fit together using universal push-fit connectors.
- Plastic - start building your terrain with highly-durable plastic components.
- Printed card - start your terrain with stunningly detailed, double-sided card inserts to build your floors, walls and doors. The vertical supports make it easy for you to switch the card over, allowing multiple themes to be supported by a common set of modular building components. Initial themes include Fantasy, Sci-Fi and World War II, but many more can be unlocked.
- Resin, acrylic and more - once the foundations have been set the future of your scenery is very exciting: it has resin walls, floors and doors in it, along with coloured acrylic and laser-etched MDF. This terrain is designed to embrace all formats. So start with our stunning card solution before planning just how 'deluxe' you will go!
- Scenic Dressing Kits - will allow you to take your designs to an even greater level of detail as you add beds, tables, machinery, book cases, computers, traps and much more...
- Easily stored - the system is 100% modular. So you can take it apart, easily store it and put it together, potentially reconfigured for a new genre or scale, whenever you want.
As you can see they have plans to make plenty of different designs for the wall panels which allow you to make some interesting Fantasy dungeons, Sci-Fi corridors or even World War II complexes made of good old fashioned brick and mortar. The ability to chop and change the terrain in terms of layout and then just slip in your own designs to make the walls pop is pretty great. I also love the force fields!
One of the goals down the road is these Wooden Inserts you can see here would would be pretty perfect for skirmish around in during a post-apocalyptic nightmare scenario. I like the idea of using the Sci-Fi corridors and then fighting a battle aboard one of the big Firestorm Armada ships from their other game. Fight to the bridge anyone?
It all kind of makes sense when you find out that Spartan Games are going to be doing 28/32mm Sci-Fi figures in the future, maybe even to do with Halo? The ones pictured above are Terran and Dindrenzi ones that they've used to show off the scale for a start!
Have you pledged?

Naaaa,
I like Mantic’s system better….
I’ve already backed it, but i just don’t think their going to make their goal 🙁
A few years ago it might have been a hit. By now, there are better or at least more interesting systems availabe. Kind of old-school, but not in a positive way.
When I first saw this I just dismissed it out of hand, but on closer inspection it is a great idea being able to convert a dungeon into scifi for just £20 extra, and its very cheap for the area it covers.
I don’t think they did themselves any favours by having it just slip out onto KS with no build up, especially what that funding total. Like @hithero, I didn’t originally appreciate what the point was and what you can do with it.
I’d also wonder about timing. I know I’m tapped out from Forward Base, and they’re in the final stages of taking money for all the add-ons. Then there’s the fact the economy is circling the drain again; my employer has slashed hours and started lay-offs. I expect a lot of people are going to be much more tightfisted with their money for at least the next several months.
I’m definitely getting in on this. I doubt that I’m alone in suffering from the “wargamer magpie” syndrome, jumping from project to project. What with the continuous stream of awesome games appearing on the market, collecting a set of terrain suitable for each new system would be impossible, both from a cost and space perspective. With this I can initially stock up on a load of the tiles and uprights and pick up the dressing kits as and when I want/need. Looking at it you can have both a card dressing kit and an acrylic/MDF in at the same time… Read more »
Yup, no pre-KS campaign and no early birds to grab the backers to get a jump start has hurt this campaign. It does look good and versatile too.
Seems like a nice idea but the highly visible plastic frames don’t look good on the non sci-fi versions. The mock up on the KS page with the resin wall sections looks awesome though.
I’m in at double platinum, because I’m not the great painter 🙁
Let’s hope they will at least reach their initial goalike 🙂
It still looks very random imho. Those uprights just look like random bits of sprue stuck to card. Even the flooring seems to stuggle to look intact as you can see the table through the floor. In the previous thread advertising this, they informed me that this is not the final design, for a company that does some awseon Dystopion Legion stuff, I would expect better quality straight out of the gates tbh. Imho, the way they have put forth this campaign only hurts their company image and shows it in a very budget half arsed way. I understand that… Read more »
I like this stuff. The science fiction stuff looks great and the plastic/resin mock ups even better. Though I do like the pre coloured nature of the card sections. Saves so much time.
I am tapped out on forward base too. I would have go in for £50 if I was not. Bad timing.
Backing this, even though it will probably not reach the goal. I like the concept of modularity, combined with a system that works without glue (I´m looking at you Mantic Battlezones!). I have a strong desire to create the interiors of a spaceship for boarding actions. It shows that a kickstarter might get something out of advertising prior to the actual start. Work out the kinks with a preview of the kickstarter page, not during the KS. Timing is another issue: Combining it with Spec Ops/Halo Ground combat could have gathered some support. Tie the terrain into the systems and… Read more »
This is the card terrain I was referring to, took me a while to find as I forgot the name, doh! It needs to at least blend like this does imho.

Looks ok but think I’ll keep my money this time.
Not appealing to me. The clips are far too big and distracting. Just doesn’t look convincing.
So… My dungeon needs a circular room with corridors coming off it at diagonals…
How does this system let me do that..?
