This post is a bit of an irony, as I today recieved my first molds from Hirst Arts and have just casted the first lot of blocks. To be honest I do not know yet how much I will manage to do, but in my mind I already have a fabulously ruined Frostgrave city… 😀
I finished a Necromancer’s tower some time ago, terrainbuilding is a ton of fun :-p
is their a post to say to people about where to get parts?
http://www.antenocitisworkshop.com is a good one for bits and pieces
nice,
I was thinking more on the BOW site, saying like for doors/windows try shops selling dollhouse’s for example.
This is one side of my hobby that has always been lacking. I find it quite daunting when I look at the boards or pieces out there and think of what went into them. Part of the issue is not knowing where to start. Materials to use and tools to work with are two gaping holes in my knowledge. It is something I’m going to have to address though. This year I’ve been building a city board for 40k (and a scratch-built table to put it on that I’ll probably post a few pics of on the forum) and I… Read more »
I’d love to make an epic gaming table. No room for one though 🙁
same here man, i feel your pain 🙁
i use expanding foam and a glue gun to make my terrain because you can do horrific, lovecraftian landscapes with it. Also I like using BB-gun balls for eyes, so you can have weird amorphous landscapes that look like they are alive. Perfect for my Primeval abyssian game.
That’s totally not going to give me nightmares…
The best part of terrain building is turning bits of crap you scavenged into something awesome so ingeniously constructed people have trouble figuring out what you used to build it.
Or you make a larger bit of crap, but sanity dictates you don’t show people those, and hide them until bin day.
You know you’re a true gamer when the packaging of your new 50″ tv is more exciting than the tv itself.
I’ve found terrain making to be one of the most rewarding aspects of the hobby. When I was younger living in rural Donegal (think Middle Earth but all the Hobbits are depressed) I made terrain out of whatever materials and scraps I could get my hands on. The first “How To Make Wargames Terrain” book by GW was my best reference and I copied many of the buildings in it with what I had to hand. Later when I moved up to Belfast for university I donated much of this terrain to my local university gaming club most if it… Read more »
Because I play in mostly 6 and 10mm the terrain is so cheap to buy I don’t bother building any ,except the odd wooded area
I do make my own terrain every now and again even tough lately I’ve been loving the sheer explosion of available kits, from pre-painted stuff like 4ground or gf9 kits to card kits like battle systems and my own scratch built stuff. At the moment I’m in the middle of moving house and a little bit of inspiration hit me. I’m going to be a bit tighter for space in the new place for gaming area and wanted to be able to have a sci-fi gaming table set up permanently. I was looking at an empty book case and the… Read more »
I’ve been wanting to build a carnivale board but beginning it is a bit daunting.
I’m in the exact same boat. I’ve looked at some of the paper stuff you print off as it’s quite cheap, but the buildings tend to be solid with very little in the way of balconies or cover. And that would really hinder a game like Carnevale. The combat would all happen at street level. I think 4Ground do some Carnevale themed stuff but it’s a few basic buildings and bridges. Then there’s the really expensive resin medieval stuff that a few companies are doing but a 4’x4′ board of that is not going to be cheap. DIY is definitely… Read more »
I’m not sure it’s 4Ground that do Carnevale terrain (though I could be wrong). Plast Craft Games do however: http://www.plastcraftgames.com/en/63-designed-for-carnevale
Right you are. I’m continuously confusing the two.
It’s nice stuff but you’re not building much of a board with three extremely similar buildings and an assortment of bridges. Plenty of companies do different types of scatter terrain that would suit it but I’d love to see them expand (and get a bit more adventurous with) this range.
The plast craft stuff looks good. I think I can make the other stuff, but its all the twerly werly bits (or Venician Gothic in adult words) that I’m at a loss how to do.
