Secret Weapon’s Bonefield Bases Go Circular!
July 29, 2011 by beerogre
We previously brought you news of the outstanding bonefield bases from Secret Weapon.
These bases are designed to be painted and filled with water effect, or even coloured PVA to represent blood or swamp water... something I'll have to show you guys how to do in the future.
Anyway, due to popular demand, these bases are now available in the round, lipped design used by Privateer Press and others.
You know you want 'em!
Skulls and water effects? I think I’ll be basing all my Cryx on these bad boys!
Oh, look, I also have a tutorial online for adding blood and gore to these bases!

PVA & red food colouring, ink or paint works well for blood, you can also mix it with a drop of black paint or ink to get your darker tone.
PVA works but I’d recommend UHU or a water product as they dry clear with less shrinkage than you’ll get with PVA. My favorite water product is the “Realistic Water” from Woodland Scenics but I usually use my UHU.
These look great, though it does bring me back to a recurrent thought: shouldn’t bases match the terrain they’re going to be played over? In my head, they should. Resin bases are all very well, though often what it highlights is the stark difference in quality between the bases on the model and the board and terrain the game is fought over. Of course, you could take this all as inspiration for upping the odds on your game board (and using some of SW’s loose skulls too) and for painters it’s just more nice bases. * More gaming musings from… Read more »
This is a good thought — but then most people would have green flock bases and nothing else. It also really only works if you’re gaming on one table all the time. My LGS, for instance, has several different table themes so I could pick urban, snow, brown flock, green flock, red rock, etc. but then I’d look out of place if I didn’t pick the right table. I’ve always based my models to compliment the models — I like to think that someone choosing resin bases will go the same route. In the end it’s more about the model… Read more »
UGH ! Certainly not ! I’m not going to deprive my miniatures of their beautiful bases just because they’re likely to play on a green mat anyway… Sure, this is a motivation to make good terrain instead of the crappy green felt type, but even assuming you get to play on amazing tables all the time (which is unlikely in most cases), you’re still going to play on different terrain all the time… Even on the same table, there are different textures to the ground. If you must have a base that matches the terrain, make it match the display… Read more »
Thank you guys, my only wish was that they where up on your store when you had the sale on. This is great news for us hordes players as well.
I haven’t had a sale in quite awhile — but there’s a 10% coupon on the front page for new customers, a Facebook exclusive coupon going around right now and I could probably be talked into doing ANOTHER coupon for the BoW Backstage subscribers 🙂
I love you guys. You make great stuff. Wish I could do the same.
