Real Terrain Hobbies Crafts Stunning “The Shire” Tabletop!
September 3, 2021 by brennon
Real Terrain Hobbies does some amazing work showing off impressive tabletop builds that would be a dream to roleplay, skirmish, or wargame on. Their latest project has now come to an end though as they showed off the final steps in creating an absolutely amazing The Shire board for Middle-earth and The Lord Of The Rings fans.
The Shire - Ultra Realistic Wargaming Board // Real Terrain Hobbies
This project has been in the works for a while and Real Terrain Hobbies has been showcasing the process HERE in more detail but I think you'll agree, the final result was worth it. Whilst some of the work was done with a bit of the ol' DIY many of the resources used here came from Woodland Scenics.
It all came together to create a frankly stunning tabletop that I would be happy to play on. I could imagine playing out some of the final moments of the books as Frodo and his fellow Hobbits battle Sharkey and his Ruffians for the fate of The Shire.
Hillside Hamlet
Talking of Hobbits, Real Terrain Hobbies is also looking to head to Kickstarter soon with 3D Printable Files of the very Halfling dwellings that he used as part of the table build. These are going to be coming to Kickstarter later this year and you can sign up to be notified of more news HERE.

These look superb and they would be a shoo-in for anyone seeking to replicate even a fraction of the tabletop that Real Terrain Hobbies was able to achieve. As someone who is really into their Middle-earth gaming on the tabletop, it will most likely be pretty hard to resist building something Shire-like in the near future.
An Army Of Hobbits!
You couldn't have an excellent Shire board without some Hobbits to go on it. So, Real Terrain Hobbies also drafted in the help of wargaming YouTuber Zorpazorp to paint up a couple of forces for him. You can see how this painting project came together in the video below!
This really was a labour of love and I can't imagine how hard it would have been to send those miniatures out of the door! Regardless, they ended up looking fantastic on Real Terrain Hobbie's tabletop.
I always love big, grand projects like these. It shows that anything can be achieved once you put your mind to it. You'll fail a bit BUT it will all pay off in the end! Maybe it won't be so hard to build all of the tables from the Quest Of The Ringerbearer after all?
I hope that has given you a burst of inspiration for today!

The most impressing feature is that that zorpazorp dude had to paint *with candle light* due to power outage… XD
Been following Neil for years. He makes incredibly beautiful terrain pieces. His wizard tower is just insane.
I do love me hobbitses.
So nice ?
I’d love chance to build a table like that, but I just don’t have the storage, so I have to use more generic terrain pieces on a flat table.
Houses in UK are just not big enough to store everything… homes in places like america and australia look huge from videos I’ve seen.
I wish I still had my Hobbit army, but for some reason I think I must have gotten rid of them somewhere. Makes me a little sad. Looks amazing, though!
Very lovely indeed.
Wow the details of all the hobbit home’s is fabulous looking an the finished table is stunning looking a brilliant job Neil.
Finally watched this at the weekend, absolutely bonkers the level of detail on this, fantastic work.
