ModelMates Gets A New Website Full Of Weathering Ideas!
January 20, 2015 by brennon
ModelMates have opened up their new website which means you can get a hold of their awesome weathering materials with decidedly less hassle. Normally the opening of a webstore wouldn't catch our eye but ModelMates has meant that we've taken a whole new approach to making our massive wargaming tables and most of their products have been of great use!
The first thing that got our attention when it came to ModelMates were things like their Rust Effect and Snow Effect products that age and add character to wargaming boards and miniatures. Back when we ran Hobby Lab at Salute we saw some of these products and had a play around with them, it was pretty insane how easily you could make something look old or battle-worn.
There's also some great stuff for weathering up your bigger buildings and giving them a real aged look. Above you can see two examples of that where they've used the sprays to give a worn and rain streaked effect to the ruin as well as spray on moss (yes, spray on moss!) to give things and overgrown feeling.
Considering where we're going with Hobby Lab and both Warren and Lloyd's obsession with terrain it's not hard to see why we like seeing products like this pop up. Admittedly you could probably fill in your brick joins with paint but the fact is that these products give it a more lifelike appearance on the tabletop.
Above are two examples of the kind of effects you can achieve with the products from ModelMates thanks to Sam Newell. You can read more about the different things used to achieve this look HERE and also see some work that went into making a pond look rather fancy indeed.
This also shows off a table in more detail where the weathering sprays have been used on the buildings and bridge to give it a wartorn feeling. The building itself is very impressive with a blasted and burnt out look to it and plenty of aging too. This was a project by Richard Hale and you can see more of it HERE.
Essentially what we're saying here is that if you like the look of this stuff and fancy making your own board or miniatures look weathered and effectively, realistic, then check out the ModelMates website and see what you think.
They've even come up with a series of articles and links from others HERE that show off how to use their products
Hopefully we'll be able to bring you some more demonstrations of their products in the future!

I use them all the time and swear by them! Easy to use and fab effects
Wow, brilliant.
I just checked out the ‘winter terrain’ video and had a ‘hand slap on forehead’ moment. I’ve been using snow effect and PVA and have been finding that it can look rather translucent, or even disappear completely, meaning I had to apply more and more to achieve the look I was after. Solution: add white paint. Hand -> Forehead.
Interested in the sprays. Will go have a peek. For light mortar I use actual wall filler, smear it on, and wipe down the surface with a damp cloth. I use a dirty brown wash to age it afterward.
Those are amazing, I am sold or sure! Will definitely be getting a load of these…
the rust affect looks good.
I figured out the white base coat trick for snow a few years ago. It was for a largish piece (Durin’s Tower).
There was s a YouTube channel, Battleboards.co.UK, where there are some great terrain making videos. Some of the shots above are from that channel.
Richard over at Battleboards have some insane videos to show his works. Well worth the time to look through them. That Italy board is just insane.
Is there a US supplier for their products that isn’t above retail?
Have been wondering the same thing! From what I can tell there is not at this time. Would most definitely pick up some of this stuff if it was possible in the US. Can’t order from their site either I would imagine due to shipping restrictions on the products. But I’ll take slow boat delivery!!
Now these look fabulous. Need to look around stores around here.
Interesting stuff.
these look amazing!
Very cool products and much more efficient than leaving your models and terrain outside to actually weather them 😉
