Kraken Wargames Launching Soon With Range Of Gaming Mats
October 21, 2015 by brennon
Kraken Wargames are coming to Kickstarter to launch their range of Gaming Mats towards to the end of October. See what you think of some of their designs below which range from deep space to the narrow path ways through jungles...
Each of their mats look like they're going to be produced in a variety of different sizes including 6x4 and 4x4 although the space mats like you see above will be in 6x3 and 3x3.
They have done a lot of very interesting designs, each of which gives you a '3D' design which is quite unusual to see work so well. Whether or not that works well on the final print will be the proof of the pudding but I think they've got some great ideas.
I really like what they've done here with the snow mat. Hopefully in the future they can work on adding some more intricate detail onto the mats. For example, I would love to see a 'Battlefield' mat which features dead bodies, discarded weapons, blasted holes in the ground from artillery and maybe even a dead monster or two.
What do you think of their collection?

Can’t have dead bodies or weapons as that would tie the mat into one game system. These mats do look really good although I’m a little concerned that they have printed objects that are tall and should be represented with a terrain piece rather than being flat, such as the snow hills.
Yeah, these are not what mats should be.
Too much 3 dimensional imagery only looks good from top down preview pics, not from table side gaming height.
Anything that has any shadow kind of spoils the effect.
I don’t mind the detail. In fact, it can cut out the need for a lot of terrain. Does your models LOS cut through a terrain feature? Can’t see it if it does. The jungle mats a bit weird though – assuming that most jungle terrain is impassable, it only leaves the paths to fight over. That’s not much space!
