Glimpse Games and Gears’ Awesome Battle Boards on Kickstarter
December 9, 2013 by dracs
Games and Gears have recently set up a Kickstarter campaign in search of funding to bring us all what they are calling the next generation of gaming boards and terrain pieces!
So far the Kickstarter is geared (heh, see what I did there?) towards giving us some great looking battle boards suitable for a variety of games and Games and Gears have partnered with companies like Cipher Studios and Soda Pop Miniatures to create boards which capture the character of those games. One notable example of these is Games and Gears' Dropzone Commander cityscape board.
In conjunction with Hawk Wargames existing terrain selection these battle boards will allow you to create a superbly detailed city and road system for your battles to take place within.
Far more environments than just Dropzone Commander's cities are portrayed in these battleboards, as can be seen in their Anime Wars and Anima sets.
Each of these sets conveys the individual character of their settings and the level of detail in their designs is really impressive. I particularly love the crazy-paving style cobblestone sections of the Anima boards as they add an excellent level of texture.
Games and Gears even go to Hell and back in the case of the Hellscape battle board.
This is the perfect setting for your games of Hell Dorado or even to create a cool demon planet for you Chaos Space Marines to kick back on.
Of course, once you have got yourself a cool battle board you still need some terrain to bring the setting to life. Well Games and Gears have teamed up with Brush 4 Hire for some cool sci-fi terrain specifically made for the Kickstarter.
As well as these fairly nice mdf pieces, Games and Gears are showing off some absolutely fantastic renders for their Warsmith range of terrain.
This Kickstarter looks like it will bring us some excellent terrain and allow us to make characterful and stylish tabletops suited to whatever games we happen to be playing. Be sure to head over and check it out.
Will you be chipping in to bring these battle boards to your gaming tables?
We saw this stuff in the flesh (Was very impressed)

It looks great and glad to here it was good looking in person too!
I don’t get the recent surge in playing surface products. It is always nicer to have a textured surface than a plain surface but it seems like such a luxury product for the few people who have all the terrain they could use.
These look very cool for the gamer who has everything though.
I think that’s the whole point. Things like this were a luxury, but they don’t have to be anymore. They weren’t a luxury for people with disposable income (that’s our hobby in a nutshell when you really think about it). They were a luxury for people with a lot more free time during which they could make modeled terrain. Now, improvements in manufacturing technology coupled with the ability to speculatively start a business with crowdfunding has made it possible for a textured or printed gaming surface to be just another product bought alongside all of the other gaming products. It’s… Read more »
for the sake of mobility, stuff like this is pretty useful (and packing it away under a bed or in the gap between the cupboard and that little bit of wall next to the door or, behind that thing in the corner – probably called a corner unit (makes sense but could be wrong) god knows why it’s there or why it exists. Being a funny shape it doesn’t have many uses yet still cba to replace it with something more useful). Fixed tables are great, you can pour your heart and soul into them but if you’ve got neither… Read more »
I suspect that DZC board looks even better with the fully painted resin versions of those buildings rather than the (still pretty cool) card stock ones.
These are pretty good, but I liked Secret Weapon’s more personally. I felt they had more versatility from game to game. I do really like their add-on terrain pieces though. But it is an incredibly short KS time-frame. I mean yeah, they made their funding and will probably break a few more SGs before the end of it, but as much as I like some of the terrain pieces I just do not have the money to shell out for them right now. Had they extended it to post-Xmas I may have been able to get in on it. Oh… Read more »
The problems with SW boards is the fact that there roads are 8 inches wide on 12×12 tiles. This is not great for anything except 40k also from looking at the recent updates showing complete tables of their tiles a major point that catches the eye is all the joins made by 24 tiles. The G&G ones are way harder to see. Also there is less repetition from 6 unique tiles.
These are 24×24 inch tiles I believe.
True, but my issue with the G&G tables is that they are rather specific for each game. Meanwhile you have things like Rolling Hills and Junkyard from SW which can fit all sorts of games.
I also feel that the GW tables have more versatility. I’m not trying to put down G&Gs tiles mind you…I do think they are nice. Just have a personal preference for the SW ones.
I put money down for this, but I wish I could get more discount price boards. I’d really like two different designs, but the second board is full price anyway so I guess I’ll wait until it hits retail.
As a Kickstarter it’s a bit meh… no stretch freebies, no nothing.
It looks great. Could be used for many things (28mm and 10mm – possibly 6mm-15mm compatible within reason).
It may be a bit Meh with the stretch goals, but you are getting it half price
@Maxxon there are still black Friday twin set rewards open and they make each set just £72.50 this is only £10.50 more than early bird ones, and is still around £100-120 off RRP
not a bad deal at all.
@ hithero: Yer everyone seems to forget the fact that the first set is Half the RRP or less. i have yet to see a KS offer such savings on the base product, the savings come after from add ons that you have no choice over most of the time.
Maybe true but it creates a funny effect that makes people reluctant to pledge more. Me at least. The more you pledge, the higher the unit price becomes (given that I have one set at early bird prices). It’s almost like wanted to limit pledges.
I can build this stuff myself, and I have. I won’t be buying any at 120GBP RRP…
Is there anything stopping you from making a second KS account and pledging another early bird set? Seems like the smart thing to do if you want more, at least until they are all gone.
Although a slightly smaller scale, I am thinking that the DZC boards would do quite nicely for the upcoming Robotech RPG Tactics game.
I put cash down on the two board Black Friday deal. I’d also like to pick up some of their dice trays, you can snap right onto the board.
