Next Month in Backstage – Gamescape Downloads
June 18, 2011 by beerogre
It's on the horizon... Beasts of War will be bringing you downloadable terrain that you can build along with us!
Click here to get a Backstage Pass
The downloads will be available exclusively to those with a Backstage Pass and we'll be taking you through the steps on how to build each of the terrain sections as we publish them.
These aren't your typical papercraft terrain. They're designed to be affixed to foamboard or cardboard, then reinforced with our secret "MagiMix" concoction that will make you a terrain piece that's robust, visually stunning and most importantly practical.
The process requires little or no painting talent, you will be able to follow us along on the videos, it requires a bit more material than a typical paper-craft project but the result will last you much longer.
Here's a little list of what you will need to assemble before next month.
Tools
- Craft knife
- Scissors
- Wire Snips
- Colour Printer
- Old Paintbrush
Materials
- Foamboard
- PVA Glue
- Some filler (sand, sawdust or grit)
- Paperclips
- Printer Paper
Other than that, all you need is a tiny bit of skill. These terrain projects are very forgiving, cuts don't need to be exact and if you make a mistake... you can change the design to accommodate it.
If you have any questions, then post them below and I'll get the 'terrainmeisters' Warren and Lloyd to answer them.

Fantastic idea, thanks for making them available 🙂
It would be great to see some fantasy style buildings at some point in the future.
Did you check out our new logo?
This is a BoW exclusive range… Fantasy is in the pipeline. 😉
Historical would be nice to see as well. MBA does some nice resin 30mm stuff, but they’re pricey and there isn’t much else out there.
Historical/medieval/tudor etc. is all planned… but we need to research the textures and designs etc.
Just to be clear the first project is apocalypse city. This is a part works with new pieces released each month.
After that’s well underway we’ll announce the next project.
The logo looks very nice mate.
Looking forward to seeing the Fantasy stuff.
nothing will be better than the original gamescape with warren a lloyd!!
However, those projects are all now part of Gamescape. There will be more table building, plus stuff you can get involved with too…
It’s a whole evolved Beast now! 🙂
i wont be getting involved, I actually have little extra money atm so i cant afford the pint of beer that is backstage haha, its all good though 😛 maybe over the fall
It would be great if you published a single demo video of the terrain for those of us still unsure about joining BSP (Backstage Pass). I admit though, these could be the tipping point that gets me subscribed, I’d just like a bit more of a teaser.
Do we need too?
We’ve already made some of the ruined buildings and showed them live.
Awesome guys, looking forward to it, and thanks for the list of needed stuff!
Skweeky, check out the latest turn8, they showed it in there.
@beerogre – last time I dealt with paypal they took a pile of moeny out of my account without my permission. It ended up in front of the FSA and a long fight that I won through sheer bloody mindedness. I don’t want anything to do with the swine. Is there another way we could sign up? Bank transfer, one off cheque?
Check the Backstage FAQ… here…
http://www.beastsofwar.com/bow-article/backstage-faq/
how many sheets of full colour paper would it take to build the one you showed on Turn 8? Last time I got printer ink it cost £30!
Also would you be able to do line drawing templates to use for measuring out foamcore to spray?
Go to Tesco and get the cheaper (Tesco brand) alternative for ~£15… that’s what I do.
I tend to get my ink online from places like http://www.cartridgesave.co.uk/
Depending on your make and model they can be very cheap
I’m not to sure about this. Not a bad idea but i fear that it won’t look as good as i would like. Will be very interesting to see some finished work instead of rendered images.
The guys showed it in the last Turn8… Go check it out if you want to ! 🙂
BoW Romain
I did watch Turn 8 but the resolution and focus wasn’t all that good.
I work in a sign shop. Foamboard is a part of my life, as well as printing vinyl. I could make a full city within a few days. Only one thing, what brand is the foamboard? I seen only white core foamboard, the gray core will save me a step in painting the edge.
is it just me, or do these look like something out of the Fallout series, reminds me of the feind control part of NEW Vegas
also i checked with paypal about how it would charge my card, itll still charge me in pounds, my bank dosnt like conversion charges, i wish it was offered in multple payment options
OK, I’m interested to make these up for Dust Tactics, so how restricted are you in the length of walls? Mine need to be in multiples of 93mm-ish to fit on the grids and not all lengths to have windows or doors. Will this set work for me?
What kind of foamboard and what dimensions does it need to be?
Looking forward to this one.
Thanks Manpug, your post reminded me my brother in law works for a sign makers and does that stuff too! He made a load of full size super heroes for my 40th fancy dress party so this should be a doddle for him ( I hope) 😉
Pete
It should be easy for him as this stuff is close to what we always work with.
As a value added freebie this is awesome for the Backstage gang. I like the idea of thin foamboard or sturdy cardboard plus peel off and stick printout.
Of course id like templates suitable for ww2 and sci fi in 6/15/20/28/54 mm- never please some people 😉
would you be able to make whole (non ruined) buildings as well?
War torn cottages!!!! would be a winner ..pillaging villages and fighting skirmishes in a burned down village would be awesome!!… I could just see it my 4×6 table covered with ruined cottages and inns!!! with roads and alleyways chocked with rubble and debris with the occasional heretic hanging from the rafters!!!! YEAH!!! RUINED COTTAGES!!!
Awesome idea! Can’t wait to build a few variants. Eager to see some Space hulk oriented designs 😉
Good. I’ll probably print them out in black and white though and use as templates. Then paint them myself to match the cardboard/foamcore bunkers I made: http://www.wargaminghobby.com/article/bunkers-22.html
How about a sheet of addons such as street names, posters, alternative doors etc
Looks excellent, any chance of some non ruined buildings? would probably make a nice contrast?
Looking forward to trying this stuff out, keep up the great work gents
Cool – some great “special stuff” for the backstagers.
We didn’t burn them…
Simple and sweet is best for the start of this. In a few months I expect a full replication of big ben. As well as Toronto’s CN tower. Chop, chop no time for rests.
how tall would the CN Tower be at 28mm scale?
At least 200 feet. No chance of fitting that into your game club unless they have a roof top gaming area.
I’m definitely looking forward to this! I’ll get my materials together and follow along like a good little student!
These are going to be awesome!! Cant wait to try it out!!
