Community Spotlight: Fresh Water Challenge Runners-Up
March 24, 2017 by crew
Join us as we show off some of the Runners-Up from our recent Fresh Water Challenge. These projects were fantastic and deserved an honourable mention as part of the Community Spotlight in our Hobby & Painting Forum to make sure that everyone gets some recognition for their hard work.
With that in mind we'll dive right in and enjoy the water, it's lovely!
River: Running Away With It by kimstyles
Leading the way we have this fantastic river tablescape which was done by kimstyles.
This was designed as a Flames Of War tabletop for you to use in Europe to represent France, Italy or maybe even Tunisia. As you can see there was a lot of work done on this murky river and it winds its way across the different sections of the table.
The work on the effects here is fantastic and we love how you can tell the different depth levels across the river. You get a sense that this is a real geographical feature on the tabletop.
The little bit of added texture done to the surface of the river makes it look like a slow, creeping river churning up the mud and dirt from the bed of it. It fits very nicely into the idea of a realistic river for your Historical games.
Water, Water Everywhere by soapdodger
soapdodger went to work on some smaller pieces and set on terrain for use in your games. He led with some brilliant looking images showing off the likes of this Waterfall...
...and then another fantastic looking piece here with a Fishing Pond.
The smaller pieces were certainly where this project began to shine too as it allowed you to think about using water effects and interesting spot pieces across your board.
There is a very in-depth tutorial for each of the pieces that you see here over on the forums so if this does look like something you'd be interested in replicating you can find out more there.
Once again a big congratulation to soapdodger on this as it truly did look like a fantastic set of terrain for your Fantasy and Historical tabletops. The Waterfall, in particular, would make for a wonderful piece to skirmish over out in the wilds.
Bailey Bridge by collins
Last but not least we have some work by collins for those who enjoy their World War II. Here we have the Bailey Bridge that was inspired by watching old films.
This big terrain piece looks perfect for use in your games of Bolt Action. Set up like this, as part of a larger river, you'd have a wonderful piece which could act as a choke point in your games on the tabletop.
Using some of the techniques by our own Lloyd when it comes to rocks this allowed for some churned up and brutal looking banks on the side of this river. The water effects also look great but potentially a little too bright blue for a warzone.
A fantastic project however that really does show off what you can do when it comes to feature pieces around a river.
