Fantasy Flight Take Star Wars: Legion To The Desert On New Gamemats
March 16, 2018 by dracs
Fantasy Flight Games are heading to the Desert for Star Wars: Legion with two new gamemats up for pre-order.
Both 3x3 mats present gamers with a cinematic backdrop for their Star Wars conflicts. The Desert Ruins sees you fighting over the half-buried remains of a Republic structure.
While the Desert Junkyard mat lets you struggle to regain some all-important tech.
The Junkyard map particularly catches my eye, largely due to the AT-AT footprints in the sand. It's an evocative image, that shows you this is Star Wars.
Both mats can be combined well to give you a full 6x3 gaming space. It would be cool to see how well they work with terrain.
Star Wars: Legion Terrain
Talking about terrain, the folks at Fantasy Flight Games have also shown off some of the kits they're adding to the mix.
For example, you have the Priority Supplies pack above which includes a whole bunch of additional terrain pieces AND you get scenario cards that go with it for setting up a proper engagement. This can be combined with the Barricade Pack which adds in more defensive positions on the tabletop.
You get a handful of those barricades in the original Core Set for the game but this takes things up a notch if you want to provide yourself with a more cover-heavy battlefield.
Do you plan to venture to this planet in a galaxy far, far away?

Looks awesome. Bring on the sandcrawler and sandpeople. So much potential.
Personally I think that they are kind of busy looking. I’m not sure they would look right with stuff set on them.
I am very curious however about why they went with a pair of 3×3 mats when it seems like the game is envisioned as being primarily 6×3.
You buy the mat when you start playing in 3×3 – get used to the game on a smaller scale, then grab the second mat when you want to play proper games later on I guess.
Allows for a smaller buy-in initially.
I dunno, if you are trying to keep the buy in cosdt down are you going to be spending money on a neoprene mat knowing that you will be spending more quite soon after to expand? Wouldn’t you just go straight for a single piece 6×3 and be done?
I think a novice player can get a mat that has printed terrain on it and have a ready-made scenario. But then there is less replay-ability since you can’t really use it for anything else.
They’re good looking mats. It’ll just come down to price against othe companies 3×3’s / 6×3’s for me. I wish ( or rather my wallet does ) that i was capable of the smaller buy in, does 2 Core Boxes count as ” small ” ?
Not bad but why do these companies insist on printing terrain on them?
I guess to make it more boardgamey… These look really cool, I love the AT-AT footprints, but will skip on these as the printed on terrain looks stupid on a miniatures game.
beauty
Super hyped for Legion…but these mats are too busy.
They look good.
not a fan of these, terrain printed on just doesn’t do it for me and the AT AT tracks really jar, looks like someone had a massive stamp as there is no definition to show path of movement. Also how long did it take to water the sand to get perfect imprints like that? Sand isn’t generally known for its ability to take a perfect impression
