Grab A Star Wars: Imperial Assault Skirmish Map From FFG
November 19, 2016 by brennon
Fantasy Flight Games has made setting up your skirmish games of Star Wars: Imperial Assault all the easier with a new Mat which lays out one of the designs without fuss.
This shows the layout of the ISB Headquarters Map that you'll know from the game. This means you don't have to fiddle around with tiles as all you need to do is drop this down and grab your miniatures and tokens.
It's an interesting step forward and certainly helpful for those trying to set up tournaments for the game where you need lots of the same map set up. Maybe they'll do the same for more in the range?
What do you think of the mat?

It’s a good idea I suppose, but one mat per map could very quickly get expensive or alternatively, playing on just one mat all the time will very quickly become boring. I’m not convinced Imperial Assault is set up very well for mats.
It is a neat idea, but you are right about it becoming expensive. I like it as it means I could set up a game very quickly, and may get me pulling the trigger on buying IA. I think the idea of this is that these are the maps that are currently used in the tournaments.
I believe this map is in the current 2016 tournament rotation.
IA Tournaments use 3 maps for the year which correspond to the ones they’ve released. Normally you have to bring your own tiles and build the map at the start of the round; the rules give you 15 minutes to get it all set up. Just dropping a mat and being ready to go is a VAST improvement. But as mentioned, this is aimed at the tournament scene more than home players.
they make you build a map as part of the tournament ?
Sounds kind of silly to make that part of the fights as you’d waste time building instead of playing.
The first 15 minutes of the round is building the map from the tiles and setting up all tokens and such.
Would be great if they used the whole 2′ mat with a large layout on, you could then only use part of it for scenarios giving it a lot more reuseability.
looks good should be good for other games as well.
I don’t object to people making stuff that I don’t happen to want to buy, but this does seem like a bit of a strange product. Both kind of cool, and something I’d like, but also something that I can’t ever see being made for a price that would make me think it was worth it for something so limited. As @hithero says, it would be nice if the map was blown up a bit. It feels like there’s a lot of wasted space on it. Alternatively, they could have made this map but added extra rooms and corridors onto… Read more »
Judging from the other map mats, the unused space is for cards, tokens, and figures. This really is a tournament focused product.
A friend of mine had a pro printer make up all the maps from the game on vinyl mats, very good and useful to play on.
