Halo Waypoint Talks Scale & Design With Spartan Games!
February 19, 2015 by brennon
Some more details have emerged about the upcoming partnership between both 343 Industries, the folks behind the Halo video games, and Spartan Games with their new miniatures wargame featuring ships from the game and some that are not! It's all canon though!
They kick things off with the Covenant...
Covenant ORS Heavy Cruiser - The ORS Heavy cruiser isn’t exactly the type of thing that any UNSC captain wants to see appear on their viewscreen. Boasting a variety of stealth-related advancements as well as both plasma lance and cleansing beam capabilities, the ORS Heavy cruiser takes the already-impressive destructive capabilities of the CRS (Light cruiser), CCS (Battle cruiser), and RCS (Armored cruiser) class warships and ups the ante considerably.
UNSC Epoch-class Carrier - The Epoch-class is the heaviest of the UNSC carriers, trumping both the mid-range Orion-class carrier and the post-War Poseidon-class light carrier (seen in Halo 4) in tonnage. Capable of withstanding considerable punishment, the Epoch often finds itself serving as the lynchpin of any fleet action.
...and they look very nice indeed. One of the big things that was put forward by the Halo team is that this is meant for you to fight out battles both real and imagined from the Halo-verse. You can add ships into significant engagements that maybe weren't there the first time just to see how it all plays out. Think of it as wargames in the real sense.
The UNSC aren't to be left out of the equation either with their brutish looking ships that are designed as effectively massive guns. I love the look of them and it's very 'to the point' and blunt which makes for great ship design. They even come in battleship grey for that real hardcore feeling.
Paris-Class Frigate - From the 343 Industries’ perspective this was a simple design to approve, as it was based on the highpoly model from Halo: Reach. There were almost no changes needed beyond tiny details that had to be altered for the scale and casting in plastic.
Marathon-Class Cruiser - This required more work than might have been expected, though we obviously had a head-start in that we could make use of the amazingly detailed model created by Blur for the remastered Halo 2: Anniversary cinematics! The first choice by Spartan Games was to use the more recognizable Halcyon-class cruisers, but unfortunately that did not work for fictional reasons (as described in Halo: The Fall of Reach). However, that doesn’t mean we won’t see the Pillar of Autumn or other Halcyon vessels in the future!
The team have also talked about more work that has gone into the project over on the link above so I urge you to jump on over and read some more. I think this could be a really good co-operative endeavour and both sides seem adamant to make this a properly awesome wargame.
Are you liking the look and design?

I’ve never been a Fps fan but the Halo lore is fantastic. As a huge fan of Firestorm Armada, I’m really excited to see how this game plays.
its good to see how big these ships will be
Kool, 1:20000 scale, same as my Star Destroyers and Rebel cruisers I bought years ago.
Lovely phallic designs. For some reason, everyone wants to design ships that look like big guns, saucers or points… in space, the ONE place where aerodynamics do not matter in the least. Sure, they look badass… And they fit the HALO bill perfectly. Meh.
I get your point regarding phallic designs, but pretty much EVERYTHING can be interpreted as phallic. Swords, guns, tv remotes, paint brushes. Even penises.
I would imagine they would be designed similar IRL. Engines at the back, out of the way and guns at the front/side where they’re likely to encounter enemy craft. Because In Space, everyone meets on a magical horizon line…
The UNSC craft are clearly based on the Sulaco from Aliens, which was designed specifically to resemble an automatic rifle.
Anyway, space willies are fun!
Would love to find that rock you’ve been sleeping under @elromanozo . Seems like a wonderfully isolated place where I could finally get an undisturbed nap in.
I haven’t been sleeping under a rock… I know it’s everywhere. I like it fine, but why no other shape, really ?
I guess it’s because we are used to seeing battleships here on earth which are pretty much this shape (obviously because they need to cut through water).
When you use other shapes it my not feel right, as we are not use to them.
Also a longer shape is more practical for docking at space stations as you can fit more on docking a ring.
Here’s an example of a different shape ship that I hate, the new Cylon Basestar:

I mush prefer the old DISC base ship:

I would say Star Trek dose the best job of having interesting ship shapes.
Of course @lloyd
two warp nacelles and in between the main body. Nothing phallic there…
I like the B5 Star Fury Design: http://www.gkane.de/3dfiles/images/starfury_5view.jpg
I forgot to mention:
Hate the games… Over hyped floaty nonsense. But I like the fluff and the overall Halo Universe. This could tickle my space fleet game glands.
Two thirds of the Covenant descriptions seem to be missing (only the Heavy Cruiser is present) and the Epoch class description is in the wrong place, might want to fix that. Models look cool though.
I love the Halo designs. Ships, aliens, armors, vehicles, gunz… I love everything.
I can’t wait to get playing these games.
may be worth watching.
I think this is a good move of Spartan Games. I’m surprised they got the licence to make the game to be honest. Hope it pleases the fans of the Halo IP and draws more people into tabletop gaming.
if they do something in 28mm i might get in on it.
Is that a spaceship in your hand or are you just pleased to see me? 🙂
I’m still on the fence…….more details could tip me one way or the other!
