Community Spotlight: Bot Wars, World War I & Evil Bearded Folk!
May 18, 2020 by crew
Come and join us for another delve into the Projects to find the best of the best from the last week or so. We're going to be getting stuck into lots of great looking pieces this week...
...make sure to always let us know what YOU have been working on and share it across the site.
Bot War by rum8le
We start with something funky and a bit retro by rum8le! This is his collection of painted figures from the Bot War game by Trader Galaxy. This is a stunningly lurid green set of miniatures which look like all of the Saturday morning cartoons I watched as a kid.
This is a brilliant little project which shows off the process of painting these miniatures step-by-step. It's been great following the layering of the base colours followed by some funky metallics and of course the extra highlights which make them pop and turn them into these retro robots. The mash-up of bright green and purple works really well and makes the miniatures stand out on the tabletop.
The project isn't done either. As well as the wonderful painting on this group, rum8le has also been working on another big model for the set too. Here is how that particular miniature is shaping up...
I chose this particular part of the miniature to show off because I love the fade that rum8le has managed to work into the mix across the visor. It is very, very cool and it gives the miniature its Sci-Fi vibe. This kind of big, poppy, block-like painting style works really well on these models.
This is going to be quite the impressive miniature which dominates the tabletop. It would be rather brilliant to see rum8le work on other models from this collection and show us the foes that these Bots are going to be running into.
The challenge was to paint these miniatures over a month and it looks like things have worked out quite well indeed! Oh, and here is a look at the finished miniatures...
So, are you going to be taking a look at more of the Bot War range that we've seen painted up here? It is certainly very original and a nice take on Transformers!
World War I Armies by denzien
Next, we're moving back through history and exploring what denzien has been working on. Inspired by Blood & Valour from Firelock Games and The Phalanx Consortium, he dug out a bunch of World War I miniatures and started work on making a German and British force for the game.
Both of these collections are looking fantastic and give you a great snapshot of the forces that would have been skirmishing across battlefields during the period. Above, you have the Germans which include a selection of foot troops, machine guns, officers and cavalry which would still have been key during World War I.
The British are also looking fantastic and I think this is my favourite of the two. I love the look of the uniforms and the way both the regular soldiers and some of the characters have come together. World War II is very popular as a wargame but I think we're missing out by not playing more from The Great War.
denzien's project (which is linked above) also looks at a lot of the miniatures in more detail. As well as showing off the inspiration for the various miniatures within the armies he has also taken some shots of the miniatures close-up too.
I love seeing miniatures in situ as it were, playing out scenarios that breath life into the miniatures. This is the way that I would prefer to take pictures of my miniatures, on wonderful tables surrounded by terrain! These wonderful looking Germans are also neat, trotting down the street on patrol.
This is a fantastic looking set of miniatures and it has really got me fired up to look at some more World War I miniatures for myself. I really would love to find a Tolkien miniature to paint up if nothing else!
Abyssal Dwarfs by kharegim
Last but not least we're moving from Sci-Fi and History into Fantasy. Here we have a mighty Abyssal Dwarf army which has been crafted by kharegim.
There are all manner of epic looking characters in this collection and the one that really drew my eye was this fellow. Mantic Games really do a great job on their big miniatures and I think they take paint exceptionally well. This beast looks fantastic and the masterful sorcerer. Sticking with the idea of big miniatures looking fun, we also have this behemoth!
Why would you not want to put together a massive army which features one or two of these on the front lines? The lava effect running through the miniature is great and I particularly like the monstrous mask which is glaring down at his foes. You could imagine that being forged right onto his face!
As well as some big miniatures, kharegim has also shown off some of the regular units from his Abyssal Dwarf army too. Here we have some charging Centaurs who are stomping forward to trample enemies underfoot. I'm still not a big fan of the look of the Dwarfs from Mantic Games but I think the paint job here is golden.
As well as the Centaurs above, we also have these bestial winged terrors who are swooping into battle to pick up your enemies and drop them from a very great height.
I think these, in particular, add a real sense of evil to this army and it works so well to see these more lithe and dextrous creatures fighting alongside the squat and grumpy looking Dwarfs. The rest of the project is well worth diving into so make sure to run on over to the link above and dive in deeper.

Well done to all of you. Great work. Big kudos to Kharegim !b I love his project blogs.
I only see 5 not-constructicons. There’s Hook, Scrapper, Bonecrusher, Long Haul, and Scavenger, but they left out my man Mix Master. I feel a REE coming on…
