Glad Söndag (happy Sunday).
http://www.aliexpress.com gets you very cheap stuff from China. I just priced out a steampunk costume for my kid for about US$40. Jacket, goggles, pocket watch & hat. Free shipping.
Happy Sunday!!
Great xlbs guys, thank you.
I think the major flaw with the paint brush stand is one of stability, if you noticed, Justin had a problem when putting the brushes onto the rack, even just touching one of the other brushes or the rack itself, jogged loose other brushes! I use a neat little circular white plastic carousel from the £1 shop, designed just for storing pens and/or brushes. I’ll get a photo posted to the forum. I also felt that, at times, Justin was like a politician, he seemed to be in opposition for opposition’s sake!
Happy Sunday! I definitely need to get one of those paint stations.
Only good thing about having the kids wake me at 5.15 is sitting watching XLBS with my corn flakes!
Wrath of Kings looks very nice. Anyone know when it goes on general release?
Feedback on the ‘Furious Bolt Action’ boot camp, I think the themed weekend is a great idea, it will help to keep participants focused, less chance for confusion on what is expected etc. I would very much like to attend this one, but it does depend mostly WHEN I get my hip replacement operation, was due 17th Feb, now been put back to 17th March, bummer!!!
New band idea!
Oily Looking Chain…
With their debut hit single: Guns Don’t Kill People – Cosplayers Do.
You knows it, bra!
The WoK minis are stunning. I’m pretty sure the rules are written by the same studio who did the Relic Knights rules, which I’m a huge fan of.
Wrath of Kings bootcamp, anyone? Anyone?
Happy sunday !
Happy Sunday, great show again, good debate about paint stations, something I always struggle with not having a fixed location to paint at.
With regard to Bolt Action boot camp, like the idea of themes, and maybe theatres like Normandy, Russian front, Italy, Desert and Pacific. But my personal view is, should the first one be an introduction to the rules, but not Tank oriented which Fury is? Should that not be another session later in the year?
Happy Sunday… Like the principle for the Bootcamp theme,, but not entirely sure fury is the best film to pick. It has a few good scenes but the majority of the film is focused on the one tank crew. And the last stand scene is so totally unrealistic. There are better films to chose , like mentioned in the green room kelly’s hero’s ( more tanks)… lol
I think you could say that the Fury theme extends into as much as it’s Americans Vs Germans? Focus on a tank and a squad (squads) of men and keep it very tight to learning about the ways to paint and play with those specific units.
Away from that you could just say it’s an ‘Assault on Normandy’ Boot Camp (based on that original boxed set from Warlord) where it’s just American troops fighting into German held territory.
…also any excuse for John to get to watch Fury again I imagine 😉
Remember it’s really for a evenings entertainment and a setup for a few scenarios 🙂
We have to take into consideration what the cinema can get 🙂
Fair points..:-)
You call Fury’s last scene unrealistic then say Kelly’s Heroes would be better? 🙂 …just…..just pointing that out there. 😉
I personally would say the battle scenes in Kelly’s Hero’s were more realistic even if the plot was far fetched.
The battles were good, no doubt. In regards to Fury, I always refer to Audey Murphy. And I think that’s where David Ayer got the idea for the final scene. So in reality, not so far fetched. SURE, its blinged up a bit with some improbable moments, but at the heart of it is Audey Murphy.
True they were well filmed, I can see what you mean about the Audrey Murphy thing. I think most of the scenes in Fury were well done, but the last scene was over cooked a wee bit.
Always with the Negative waves…
Have a little faith, baby. Have a little faith. 🙂
Kelly’s Heroes is just one of those movies that “gets a pass” on so many levels for so many reasons. The plot is a little silly. The tank-on-tank combat at the end is slightly better, but the Tigers run around with the blazing speed (like the T-34-family vehicles they actually are). But . . . for some reason, SOME reason, it’s still one of my favorite movies ever. I’ve tried to run Kelly’s Heroes in a series of game systems, and I think Flames of War came out with an “army list” for them that is actually hilarious. The problem… Read more »
Great xlbs as usual guys. @lloyd For storing dropper models and being able to recognise the different colours from above what I did with my army painter set was squeeze a drop of each colour onto its lid so that when it dries you can clearly see one from another even when their ranked up in a container. Has saved me goodness knows how much time!
Should have watched the end of the show first lol 😉
Wrath of Kings wolves look astoundingly like Confrontation Wolfen.
That is no criticism by the way, in fact I’d happily use the two in the same army.
Wrath of Kings is born out of a load of artwork that former Rackham artist extraordinaire Edouard Guiton did for an abandoned project. Rather than let it go to waste, the studio who owned the artwork teamed up with CMoN to turn it into a minis game.
That explains it then, thanks.
As said, no criticism, confrontation minsi are still some of my all time favourites. Indeed, Master of Carnage, which is a devourers mini but a kind of wolfen, is still my vote for all time best 28mm sculpt.
They’re some of my all-time favourites too. I’ve still got some Wolfen and Devourers.
As an aside, the quality of the plastic in terms of detail, lack of mould lines, and lack of warping is hugely impressive. Soft plastic has come a long way in the last few years.
Love the Wrath of Kings stuff. I went in mainly to get the Zombiecide figures but added a Goritzi starter. I deeply regret not going all in now that I have them. The figures are f***ing stunning. For some reason I have a habit of going all in on the ones that turn out to be garbage and either don’t bother with or only dabble a bit with, those that turn out to be amazing. God my instincts are crap. Lol I love the idea of paint racks but there are much better ones out there than the Bandua ones… Read more »
This bootcamp is financially a non-starter for me so whatever the format is it won’t affect my attendance. If I was considering going, the proposed format would put me off. I’d much rather get to experience playing and playing against a variety, and I wouldn’t want to have to play a US army because all the German slots were already taken up. Like I say, I’m not attending regardless, so greater credence should obviously be given to the opinions of potential attendees. I’m mainly expressing mine with an eye to future bootcamps.
Personally, I could probably get the money and the time off shouldn’t be an issue. Hell I even already want to collect the Germans as my mates have just expressed an interest in starting Bolt Action.
But the format gets a big two fingers from me and so I won’t be bothering with this one. 🙁
And to bring out a point I didn’t make as clear as I could have. It’s not just the weekend itself, but the fact that I’d be buying an army to take home with me and keep using it.
That was one of the points I was making in my original post. 🙂
People shouldn’t have to pay for an army they don’t really want in the first place.
So what army would you pick?
Just a quick run down of some pros and cons as I see them 🙂 Pros With two forces (12 on each side) we simplify the learning experience a fair bit so people can get up to speed a bit quicker Theming it with a movie (fury) allows us to fairly strongly add some narrative to the weekend, where people can relate to what they saw on the Friday night People might feel a bit more confident Cons You wouldn’t get to pick Brits or Soviets (a boot camp was probably unlikely to offer Fins or French or Romanians etc)… Read more »
I’d add an extra con to the list –
With 12 slots on each side, the last people to sign up may have no choice in the army they get.
Putting the needs of the event first… Do you think a balance of armies would be better than say an in even mix?
That really depends on the wishes of the attendees, which need to come first else there is no event. If you can fill 24 places with attendees who are happy to split two armies evenly between them then the event comes first. If not then you’ll have to be flexible else you have no event for it to come first. I would offer a “no preference” option on the booking form when asking which army the attendee wants. That may help avoid the situation where 12 of the first 18 attendees request German and the last six people to sign… Read more »
Ok how about getting warlord to help and instead of having a starter army give everyone a few Germans and a few yanks so you can have the best of both worlds.
@Warzan… In all honesty as I said above, i’d pick Germans. I was just trying to point out what could be a flaw in the plan. As for “(a boot camp was probably unlikely to offer Fins or French or Romanians etc)” Why…? Do they not have figures and books…? OK so the figures are metal rather than plastic, but the fact the Resistance for Dropzone were more expensive resin didn’t stop you offering those. And on the topic of Dropzone Commander. Why didn’t you limit what people could have in that…? As it currently stands NONE of the pros… Read more »
Remember the bootcamps are aimed at new players primarily so putting some limitations in place should actually make the experience more enjoyable for them. You are correct we didn’t limit DZC and we’ll see how that goes but I also see we have a single shaltari player 🙂 These events have a purpose (new player intense introductions) we want to make them themed and straight forward. If the events continue to do well we will introduce quite a number of varieties, so I’m really not inclined to try and fit everything into one, as I don’t think that will actually… Read more »
If the DzC bootcamp only offered two armies it may affected my decision to attend. Even if no-one had selected Shaltari, that still leaves four armies, and that they did means 24 people given a free and open choice without discussion between them chose all five available armies.
There may well be sound narrative reasons for limiting army selection for a campaign weekend. I wouldn’t be concerned about multiple armies posing too much of a challenge to get to grips with, though.
12 games with 24 people will also see the pros / cons for the two army’s 12 peoples may play the same army 12 different ways?
And I’m not ruling out that kind of event, and I’m looking forward to the DZC event immensely 🙂
But there is more than one way to skin a cat, and I think it’s worth exploring.
If it doesn’t work or looks like it won’t work then these things can change. I think it will be good to change things up though as I’m not sure a formulaic approach is the way to go either.
We’ll see how it goes, and a lot of it is dependant upon getting a private screening!
It looks like Fury will be on dvd long before May. If you can’t get a private screening could you get a projector hooked up to a computer and play the movie in the large room you had all the chairs in during the week? If you can, it means you can screen a movie for any weekend you host.
Omfg , have you seen the house goritsi other models , not just the warpuppies…
http://wrathofkings.com/ks/factions/house-of-goritsi/
Look at the wardancers…….
I have never ever said this , but i would also use them as harlequins ( as well as w.o.k models)
Oh aye. That’s why I added the starter to my Zombiecide only order. (That I reallyregret as I really with I’d bought everything now that I have them. Lol )
I don’t know it it is supposed to be like it but one of my Dance masters has a deformed face. It’s just a smooth blob with a hole where one of the eyes should be. It might be a defect but either way it still looks awesome.
Only thing I dislike about the idea for the bolt action bootcamp – is the date no way I can get a freepass for it as it is the wife’s birthday
You know what would be an awesome birthday present for the wife… 😉
We used to live in Dublin so a trip to the emerald Isle will not earn me a lot of points
I was more thinking getting her a ticket for the BA weekend lol
FURY FURY FURY Lets go!!!!!!!
The FBABC (‘Furious Bolt Action Boot Camp’) is a great idea.
I think that a thematic weekend fits well historical wargaming avoiding ‘strange battles’ like early french fighting against japanese troops.
Here you can build a very immersive campaign for the players with linked scenarios.
US Army vs. German may be the mandatory choice for this first Bolt Action Boot Camp.
Already have late war germans (with a STUG III) so I would pick US troops.
Additional thought on the BA I would have to go for the yanks … I have a small Japanese force already so logically having two axis forces makes no sense to me.. although never really been a massive fan of the ww2 yanks… hmm did anyone notice that large British and contingent in Fury…haha…lol
A little tip for storing brushes is to use something that allows you to store underside down. It means any moisture in the brush doesn’t go down into the metal part and should help prolong the life of the brush.
Easiest way to do that is to keep the plastic caps that come with the brushes. Then I put them in old spice jars (washed out ofc) to stand them up.
