On the subject of kickass starter sets – are there any rumours of a Vietnam starter set from the good folks at FoW?
I’d buy that in a shot. My only real issue with FoW is that it is designed as a series of niche time periods (a nasty hang over from its historical gaming roots I’d wager). I want to play WWII toy soldiers. But is it Late War? Mid War?
I want to get into Vietnam – but I have to learn using WWII themed rules and models!
I reckon there have been countless FoW games of Brits vs Yanks, Yanks vs Russians, and so on. Late war Brits vs early war Germans is a drop in the bucket.
I can’t explain why but this bothers me a lot less than Necrons having allies 🙂
I really want a tour of duty starter set. Mostly cos I play airsoft as a ‘nam GI and I want one little rifleman I can greenstuff into a fat bloke as me…
Stu, I will personally buy you a can of florescent pink paint so your army can stand out from the crowd.
Sign me up for a FoW Vietnam box set as Open Fire is fantastic.
Is FoW no longer a historical wargame?
From what I’ve read I’d call it a Hollywood historical war*game* EG you wont find rules in flames of war for the Abrams or T72, but there’s no rules that say you can’t ever play a game against an army on the same side, or even the same army, etc or pre-set historically accurate forces, and its first and foremost a game, not a historical recreation, you can use it for that if you want, but mostly its about having fun.
That would be a great release – my concern with the vietnam stuff has always been the scope of games available vs outlay. On the start set issue I would love to see a malifeux one and I reckon Infinity could do something a bit special (Although no plastic so far inhibits that)
Worth the backstage on its own. Great coverage, cannot wait for Gargantuans coverage. With the GW stuff, more Warriors of Chaos styled stuff, if that fits the particular release. As that was some truly fantastic coverage. Interesting to hear the discussion about colour schemes as I think its such a major part of a force – I have seen technically beautifully painted armies with poor scheme selection look average, and some average painted armies that just blow you away as the scheme has been perfected. Would be good if we could ask Romain to do a tutorial on painting to… Read more »
Well guys I tore down my gaming space and piled up the wood behind the shed.
Granted done with 40k and gaming at the house, but not with other games…
I did enjoy the freakshow earlier on original weekender, but I am honestly still a little red neck about what happened to Matt and Dave and the other guys at miniwargaming it really sucks…
That’s all I will say and now moving on…
New Tau range = New looted things for my Ork armies
Every release is an Ork release 🙂
Yep! My mek will surely get to work soon!
@happyhowler, cannot wait. Been too long since I checked you plog will investigate. Been a bit hectic last few months
I have seen the flyingfish piranha film too! Piranha Part Two: The Spawning.
Its even better than it sounds.
I was expecting with some curiosity on the new TAU, GW sits 10 years + on some gold concept art from Roberto Cirillo, Forgeworld also has created some good designs and the TAU range has reached a lifespan that passes the decade, I was really expecting them to grasp the opportunity to revamp the line modernize it and maybe just maybe appeal me to but a kit or two to paint. Nothing done, same old models the only redesign the broadside that has become bigger for no real reason, riptide? not a fan, seems like a big toy with stuff… Read more »
Having been part of GW when the Tau first came out I was eagerly looking forward to seeing some of Robert Cirillo’s cool concepts be brought to life. No such luck by the looks of it.
That’s my biggest disappointment.
The best way of achieving that flip paint effect on minis is by using a paint range calls Alclad. They do various metallics from steel to chrome (and it looks like real metal rather than th emetallics from say GW or vallejo with its metal flakes in it) Then you get a translucent range of colours to go over the top of the base metal, reds, blues, purples , to get the colour effects. Two downsides , you have to airbrush them, they dont work with a brush at all, and they are enamel based, so nasty chemicals and they… Read more »
Can get a similar effect with airbrush candies and metallic paints… Just spray the two colours from different angles … But it’s not as good as the alclad stuff… But a little easier
Is it just me or when Warren said he had a game of Dropzone Commander with the creators does Justin sound like Kenneth Williams?

Its the weird Essex/Irish accent he has picked up recently.
Kroot will be in the errata 2 days after the codex release
Something for Stu

Ahhh 50 shades of Grey for men!
Nice one! Clearly you have too much to do and so little time to do it. Gaming is such hard work. Now that Warren is back, I expect things to go ever which way again.
People would think that being the Manager of Beasts of War or Tabletop Nation means we’re gaming and painting all day. We wish!
yeah we know you drink coffee and chat as well we’ve seen the videos
Wow 100 shades of grey! And here’s me thinking there were only 50….
The extra 50 are for those with gamer physical form
Thanks guys, enjoyed it – I’m liking the extra backstage coverage in general 🙂 I think it’s difficult to pick up a new game as there’s so many out there at the moment, most with great looking minis as well. I think the Tau are a little safe in their design. I was expecting more of the Forgeworld inspired designs as I thought they’d be crazy not to adopt that aesthetic and as it turns out – yep, they’re crazy. They look more anime than ever and it’s lazy not to update them after a decade (or more)? I can’t… Read more »
Great idea on the straw for the activator. I use Army Painter and it does tend to spray everywhere. I suspect a long Revell-style nozzle on superglue would probably clog up. I’ll sometimes dip the end of a toothpick in some glue if I need to get a small amount in a specific area.
I have mixed feeling regarding GW vs FLGS. The local GW store is the only one in my state and the strongest influence in the city getting new people into wargaming. Fire Warrior and DoW gave me my first tastes of 40K, and MiniWargaming gave me my first taste of wargaming, but the GW store is where I finally got into the hobby. I would like to continue to support it. The staff is friendly and enthusiastic, and the location is very convenient for me. It is also the only place I know of other than my basement where I… Read more »
signed up to backstage today to get a bit extra as i’m a night owl, laughed so hard I woke the mrs up! great job guys and i’d love to see how warren gets on with the open fire set when their finished. I got it for christmas but struggling with the infantry since used to 28mm but just couldn’t resist!
really looking forward to the new tau!
Why don’t they name the bots gundam or roboteck and then sue the companies who previously made the cartoons and toys for “using this names” ?
It feels like there should be a weekender on this morning. Probably an extra one in addition to the usual Saturday one. I’m pretty sure that’s what Jesus died on the cross for.
