I like the hangout ideas, and @Lloyd is right, the community does like to feel that connection with each other, thats what makes the back stager meets such a laugh.
Speaking only for myself, I’m not sure that something like a journeyman league would be something I could commit to. The nature of my studies means I veer between periods of being very busy and being not so busy, so I’d inevitably wind up having to miss some which would in turn break my engagement with it. Like I say, this is speaking only for myself rather than suggesting you don’t do it. Having live shows based around the latest releases or big news events seems like a good idea. Covering the latest GW codex or army book might be… Read more »
I think you guys are doing a brilliant job. It has inspired me to try to get my work to do a lot more of this sort of style stuff, doing videos on the different aspects of what we do as a new way of engaging people 🙂
Google Hangouts work really well, I like the idea of having a hangout for new ‘EPIC/discussion News’. As Warren said, I believe its better to have a show about something rather than nothing, although the WGC frequently have live hangouts during the day/week to chill while they work on things. What about live reviews or army list/play style discussions, with no editing to make it hilarious….. Looking forward to the potential of assisting at Salute 2015, is there a possibility of doing short (30-90 second) video streams during the day, I think you did some for Grumpy old war gamers… Read more »
I like the idea of the Journeyman league – I wouldn’t be able to game with it (no groups, no FLGS. Just cows and fields ’round ‘ere) but for sure I would like to finally assemble, paint and grow my merc force in a kind of parallel “Hobby Journeyman” 😀
It was filmed at Shepperton studios part of pine wood (James Bond was filmed there etc) also parts where shot in Norfolk… in the cold wet sea… so so cold 😀
Sounds good about starting a new skype project with FTW…
I like GOGOGOGOGO… that should be a show title 😉 Angry wargamer
As someone from Australia I would love the hang out and lean toward connection because its the only real chance to do it for me.
But I havent seen anything I havent liked from you guys yet..lol
Would it be worth doing some Hangouts around mixing discussions of a particular game and a designer interview, similar to crossing the FoW Vietnam online chat that happened a number of months ago and the Designer interviews?
I’m very much the same as @redben with a journeyman league (and studies stealing my hobby time). It’s a great idea but not one I can reliably commit to. And I’m also not saying don’t do it (at least it’ll be fun to watch).
As for trying stuff out, why not borrow a Google trope (I hear they’re doing quite well) and slap “beta” on whatever you do. Your production standards are incredibly high but us Backstagers, at least, will understand you can’t repeat that live.
Looking forward to seeing what you fellas come up with. [two thumbs up]
Also I’m seeing a lot of hangouts on the Youtube channels I follow (mostly middle-aged men doing hobby stuff like me). I bet there are a lot of the Youtube channel folk would love to get involved.
I will second (third?) the event driven live shows. New product, pre-show feeds like the night before a con or show you are covering, etc. The key I think is making it easy with not a huge prep time (materials, etc). Hobby lab live was a great idea and even a live chat after a pre-recorded event. Say after the first or second FOW-FTW event, you do a live chat about the games and armies, etc. (I am partial to FOW. :D) However, any live chat to give real-time impressions post-production would be worth watching, if that made sense.
Live events would be interesting, but I’m not quite sure what kind of content would be most suitable. A live Hobbylab sounds like fun though and fairly easy to do. People can jump in for relatively little cost and build along during the show. A Journeyman league on the other hand sound like fun, but has the big drawback of leaving people out because you’re pinning it to one game. I don’t play Warmachine for instance. A show like this would either ‘force’ me to start another collection or I’d have to skip the whole series. I think generically themed… Read more »
Yes to most of the above 🙂
The hangouts would be a good idea. The Chilling Wargamers on youtube have regular hangouts every week with people from the gaming industry, hosted by Spud Tate and Andy2D6 http://www.youtube.com/channel/UCCMyrZlOo6zgDS8IAYeAhCg
and they’re always great fun. So a hobby themed BoW hangout would be cool. 🙂
Live shows would be a great addition and I believe there would be a sense of connection with the community. As far as a Journeyman league it is an interesting idea and I belive it had merit. It could help someone like me who was thinking about getting into Warmachine (or whatever game) have people to connect with when you can’t get to your FLGS.
@lafayette Dave what an awesome experience! We will be looking for it!
And I praying that Adepticon and Salute are spread it next year. Great show and have a great time in Spain.
I really loved Turn 8 when you guys were doing it. Pretty much it’s why I always watch weekender and XLBS, they feel very similar. The only issue to me is that being on the other side of the world I can’t watch the live stuff and just pick it up later when you put it in the website, being being able to discuss ideas live is really engaging. One thought. Are you going to put this out to the rest of the BOW community. I presume these are going to be an all comers show and not just a… Read more »
I think a live participation would be great, although Justin does seem to describe it more like a nerd batcave. “New wood elf release? To the batcave!! Gogogo”. Things I’d like to see: – An e-version of the Miniatures ER? Or just general live painting advice with Romain? – Possibly a live game where people can comment about the game as it goes, tactically and also ask for rules explanations (I find myself asking questions at the screen sometimes, like in the Dust demo game)? @dignity I think the journeyman warmachine how-to would be better as a stand-alone pre-recorded product… Read more »
I couldn’t spare the time for a Journeyman league, it’s also not my thing, I’m a bit of a border case for BOW, not really a minis guy but enjoy the shows and you do board games and X-Wing as well. The hangouts sound good, given a bit of notice though Justin. 😎
Sorry replying to myself but a quick P.S. ocurred to me.
You were talking about maybe doing a game of Werewolf on some sort hangouts type of thing as a gesture those of us geographically challenged people. Any news on that idea?
That could be one to get us started!
Kudos on: “geographically challenged people.” 🙂 Many of us know the feeling, which is what makes these meetups / hangouts such a great idea.
Sounds great including more live stuff, I often throw hobby related videos on that I can have in the background. Something like a google hangout could be interesting, obviously there have been similar with the likes of Chilling Wargamers and Grumpy old Wargamers. Something along those lines can work well.
the live hang outs sounds dead on. The ability to throw out a hang out to discuss something at relatively short notice is grand and like Lloyd said the quality doesn’t have to be such that we can view each skin pore in HD while lens flare is added like JJ having a fit. The important thing is the live community aspect.
I like the idear of the journemans club i had started war machine but the found no one to play with there’s just no clubs where I live so u guys are my way of geeking out over war gaming that and painting my 40k army’s
Very much up for community hangouts whether they are for exciting moments or scheduled group sessions. The Journeyman scheme really appeals to me as I’m notorious for being in this hobby for coughtwentyfourcough years and never completing a squad let alone an army before being distracted by the next shiny thing. It would be great to have a community project to work with. Keep shouting out for any ways we can help at events for you guys even if it’s being a waterboy. One final note, UK Games Expo in B’ham at the end of May, https://www.ukgamesexpo.co.uk/ such a fantastic… Read more »
Live Hang-outs sounds great.
The idea of a Journeyman league sounds fun but if it’s not something I want to game, I think I won’t want to spend too much of my hobbytime on it if it goes too far beyond skirmish level.
Would there be any mileage in taking the idea and applying it to another game ?
If we got enough of us on board could BoW broker us a deal for support from a miniature manufacturer ?
How about doing something with infinity 3rd edition release
I second and third everything deaddave and toofless said.
Turn 8 was why I got my Pass and it was all about the connection, Loyds right, and it was great.
Journeyman should be seperate piece,
Kepp it up lads and well done on everything.
me too. It was turn 8 and other live events like the 40k game between ermmmm (the two guys who are sorely missed – hope they come back on board sometime) that really enthused me about BoW. I even had one of my comments read out once…. oh the fame!
A lot of cool ideas above. Anything promoting the community aspect is always a good thing. As someone across the pond, with a really screwed up work schedule, the possibility of jumping on a live event is slim to none, but can’t wait to see what happens. Along the journeyman line, kind of, what about another side project kind of thing where if a new game or rule set comes out and you say in a month, or other timeline, you would be doing a live stream about it and would do a Q & A about likes, dislikes, thoughts,… Read more »
