Video Sponsors: Battle Foam - Infinity
On the first day of Christmas BoW brought to me an episode of the Weekender. Well we all carefully looked at your Christmas lists and have put together what we think could be the perfect list of stuff to ask Santa for this year.
With everything from starter sets, paints and board games, if you find all this stuff under the tree you will be happier this Christmas than Warren was upon seeing Greebo's dwarf.

Happy Saturday!
Damn! Just seen this but about to step out the door for a Saturday of Twilight Imperium at the Foundy with my gaming buddies. I wonder if my gf will let me take over the tv to watch this when I get back after a hard day of fighting aliens. 😛 hehe.
Look forwar to it when I return 🙂
Funnily enough, I’m playing TI today as well. Not at Foundry though, obviously.
Always the best time of my Friday/Saturday work night…
Really fancy risk legacy, anyone who has played it think it might be a good gateway game? Looking for something to drag a couple of my mates into the hobby.
When we talk gateway, I suppose we used to always try to ensure the minis were good enough to try and fire off that collectors gene hidden away inside them…
These days I think it’s enough for them just to experience the fun of sitting round a table top and have fun with friends.
Our hobby is much wider now, and today there are a ton of little steps that can be taken.
So yes, as long as they enjoy the experience of it, Risk Legacy could work just fine as a gateway to the hobby 🙂
Awesome!
Inhave The Wife, She Who Rules, looking at it now.
Rick has said that the GW design studio were all big fans of 2000AD back in the 80’s. There’s no doubt in my mind that the single biggest influence on 40K is Nemesis the Warlock. Any young ‘uns out there who aren’t familiar with it should dig it out, especially the early books.* I too was a 2000AD fanboy back in the 80’s so my interest was piqued by Mongoose’s Dredd releases. Unfortunately, and I’ve mentioned this elsewhere so don’t want to repeat myself too much, I found the rules to be very dates and uninspiring. A shame as the… Read more »
*The later books are well worth a read too though they get a little esoteric and aren’t as obvious an influence on 40K. Rick would have devised much of the background for 40K before that anyway. Those later books also introduced Simon Bisley’s art and featured John Totleben, who’s art probably should carry a warning for young children. With the earlier books you get Kevin O’Neill, whose work on The Gothic Empire is amazing. BTW, Gothic Empire…..40K….. yeah. 40K from 2nd ed onwards got a lot less ambiguous in its portrayal of humanity’s relationship with xenoi, but Rogue Trader was… Read more »
EDIT: Was an annual backstage pass the first one rather than X-Wing? if so then that’s 12 years backstage access!
Like a lot of folks I was a massive 2000AD fan and the Judge Dredd RPG was up there with AD&D as the most popular RPG we played throughout my school days. Ol Chinface was a big, big deal when I was growing up and I really hope this game is a success.
Nothing against the current judge dredd game, but I really do prefer the foundry miniatures versions of the judges, I have a few, they just look right to me, moreso than warlords. I think I said it when you originally asked the question, but Deadzone was the top of my list. no idea what the game plays like at all, but I love that big monster mini, the pink and white thing, I’m buying the whole game just on the back of that. Having said that Fortune or Glory is now on the list, I’ll be getting it to play… Read more »
On the 13th Day of Christmas, we got the ‘Warren Sings Christmas’ album…
Me likey my Loka…. it was an early Christmas present to myself. 🙂 So much to paint, so little time… need to quit my day job. I would have put a Warmachine Colossal or ForgeWorld beast on the list. So awesome, but a bit pricey for a normal monthly purchase, so perfect for a Christmas gift.
My wife banned me from any game, hobby or other cool stuff as she says I have way to much of it as we speak 🙁
I’m getting sweaters she told me 🙁 🙁 🙁
Poor guy… I guess you’ll have to buy yourself a present! 😉
Great list.
Except for anything risk related. Boy, do I hate that game with a passion.
It’s right down there with monopoly. It’s mindnumbingly dull and more often then not you know who will win after a third of the game. 2 more hours to go though. Blarg.
I’d love me an airbrush or paintset, though and I’m pretty sure I could get my wife to play firefly.
As long as it has picture of captain Mal, that is…..
last time i asked my wife for a back stages pass she hit me
You made me dig up my copy of JD RPG, I’d completely forgotten it was written by Rick! Though it was published by GW. 2000AD also occasionally ran sort of mini games inside the comics, Rick may have done some of those too.
Yikes, shame to hear about the spousal abuse some of you guys suffer. 🙁 Pretty good list. I got a few here that I wouldn’t mind adding; -Dreadball: Not only is it a great game, it is also an excellent “gateway” into gaming and the hobby. The minis are nice but not hard to assemble. Being a sports game you don’t have to worry about explaining concepts like plasma rifles or psychic powers to the uninitiated. Its a sports game which everyone can wrap their head around. And it’s fun! -Army Painter Megapaint Set: This may not be something to… Read more »
I completely agree with the first two. The problem with supplies and faction starters in wargames is that is something that you have to know very well the other persons taste. For example i know a few people ( 3 at max ) that will know for sure that i love anything necrotic/biotech/evil but there are side cases like with warmahordes, right now i would love to have Convergences rather than Cryx.
And a two starter set of Warmahordes for example is not good if you are already into it and have picked your own faction.
The wife said “It’s either your hobbies or me”. She’s been a great Wife and Mother, I’m gonna miss her lots 🙂
“Red star not included” O.o
I think there was many other games that deserved to be in the list or rather do a wargamers list and a boardgamers, but in the end most of those will be appreciated for any tabletop gamer.
Now that i’m waiting to recieve Deadzone i’m considering buying another sci-fi skirmish. Judge Dredd, Infinity or Mercs ?
Nice one lads, roll on backstage!!
Would it be too hard to ask for a signed photo of WarGamerGirl for Christmas?
lol we can only ask 🙂
Warren singing…what a fantastic weekender!
It’s true there really is a gamer gene. I took my break for girls and as soon as I saw sense, I got back to my hobbies and gaming 🙂
I think Sam is referring to the Adeptus Arbites for Warhammer 40,000. It was an obvious homage to Judge Dredd, but I’m pretty sure GW doesn’t want to acknowledge any past copyright infringements that might make them appear…hypocritical.
That’s not how copyright works.
No they definitely did a Dredd game back in the day.
KR Multicase, Feldherr, Safe and Sound – just to name a few. Guys, you could from time to time tell something about them too and not to advertise solely Battle Foam (not the greates IMHO) . Are you prohibited from talking about different ‘figure cases’ companies?
ok but does that mean I have to mention every other airbrush company, paint manufacturer & game maker so as not to cause offense?
I picked PACK because I like the way it all zips together, to me it’s not only a storage solution, but a transport solution too (as I think I explained in the video).
I quite like the others too, but PACK for me edged it in this one because of the dual nature of it.
I expect every starter set in existence to be mentioned too.
SERIOUSLY Where’s Dark Vengeance!?!
It didn’t meet the criteria of being ‘almost impossible not to like’ and the starter sets that made it in are much much better introductions to their games 🙂
Some great points to ponder on ……
