The Weekender: International Tabletop Day Roundup
April 6, 2013 by dignity
Another Week is over and the guys sit down to have a chat about all the cool stuff that's been happening, and announce the up coming Grumpy Old Wargamers convention that will be coming later in the year. Warren gives us his thoughts on how the TTN International Tabletop Day went and Justin shows off one of the games that really caught his eye during the event. And lastly the guys give their thoughts on the state of the Tau Empire now that they're out and ready to buy.
As always here are the links to all the coolest posts, forums and new mini's out this week:

SAGA – It’s ace! That’s all you need to know 😉 The final expansion for the Dark Ages iteration of SAGA is released at Salute where they’ll also be running early playtest games of the upcoming Crusades version of the game. The game itself is quite simple, you have a warlord leading a warband of up to three different unit types. The main thing that sets SAGA apart are the battleboards (you can see them in the photograph). Each faction has its own battleboard with 15 abilities on it. At the start of each turn you generate a pool of… Read more »
Yay for SAGA 😉 @huscarle here on the site (hope I got the name right) is a big fan of it 😀

You did and I certainly am. I’d love to see Saga promoted on here. Like everyone I like to see my favourite games get some love and hopefully more players.
8th& 9th June it’s in the diary I’m not Grumpy but I do qualify as an old wargamer hope I can still come.
Tau seems like a really, really powerful, anti-flyer codex.
All the suits get skyfire options, and the markerlights look like they’ll be a pain in the butt (ignore cover saves, +1 BS even against flyers)
And then Warren, you’ll love this: the Riptide is an amazing piece of rules. You can overcharge it to get all kinds of funky stuff (large blast weaponry) but also get’s hot.
And the writer is… Vetock (Dark Angels) !
Malifaux! Another favourite :). I have the Ophelia crew, it’ll be familiar to you Warren as they’re analogs of the Ortegas (Ophelia is Perdita).
Also Pandemic really is that hard. Although Swampy has a terrible habit of putting it on the legendary difficulty all the time!
This was also the game I showed to a family on Tabletop Day and they loved it 😀
I heard about that game and I have to give ita try! I really like cooperative boardgames (not as much as I like to kick an opponent’s teeth, though).
😉
And a LoeG shoutout too :). Don’t let then movie put you off, folks. The comic is amazing. And a big thumbs up for the use of “errant nonsense” 😀

Concerning collectable minis – Minis are an investment in the way that cards are not. Not just of money, but of time as well. You buy a CCG booster, pull the cards out and you can whack them straight into your deck and begin playing with them. A mini needs to be assembled and painted first. You could produce pre-assembled, pre-painted minis but wargamers don’t tend to go for that type of product so you wind up appealing to no-one in particular.
Warren you will love this style of game as you can build your own narative when building your warband. Saga is a great game and it has seemed to improve with the expansions. Darren at Gripping Beast is a great guy who always eager to help and advise on the game. He came down to my local club last year and ran Saga intro and more advanced games all weekend.
I think it would also be good if the Beasts of War team can get Darren down and do an intro video of the game.
great one again guys, keep it up

No Crab Battle?
Justin,
If you think pandemic is hard, try Ghost Stories. It is another awesome cooperative game.
sounds good to me i do love a challenging board game. 🙂

We find mission 1 in Zombicide impossible. We’ve never successfully completed it.
You have to get lucky. Zombicide is great! One minute, you’re killing zombies by the dozen, the turn after, you’re getting chased by a countless mob and the dice start rolling all wrong…
Saga coverage, yes please. Great minds think alike as I bought the rulebook earlier this week, hope to get first game in with some proxies on monday. Also if you do get the Gripping Beast or studio tomahawk guys on, poke them until they agree to do a Grendel to fight in their massive new great hall. They know they want to!
In reference to collectable miniatures, I think the concept of collectable games has always been a hard one to get the right balance. Magic the gathering was a fluke in the way that World of Warcraft is for MMO’s. If you get the right product at the right time people buy into and become committed. For ever Magic or WoW in the world there has been dozens upon dozens of flash in the pan games or games that only ever become fringe. Only wizkids I think have come really close to the randomised collectable miniatures being anywhere near the success… Read more »
Bought some new Tau from my local GW store this morning. A healthy stack of Tau of Codex’s were there (I guess around 20-30) despite it being a tiny small town store. As for the other things they had 5 Riptide Battlesuits, 4 Sunshark Bombers and 2 each of the new Finecast models. Enough to last a week or two I’m sure.
@warzan you might be interested to know that I bought the rulebook for Malifaux and have been getting a bunch of people here tempted to start. I am going to be picking up a set of Lady Justice and the Death Marshals myself, simply because the Death Marshals look awesome!
…welcome to the Guild 😀
Fascists 😉
Yeah for Malifaux coverave in the future.
I got my Tau, NOT! No player has it at my end of the woods due to them not selling it to my indie store.
With regards to collectible minis: Using the two big ones as an example, Star Wars & Heroclix, on average you would look to pay a tenner for 5 or 6 pre painted minis, plus game cards. That’s not bad compared to traditional minis where (even for plastic) you’re paying more and have to put work in before you can use them. Admittedly the quality is not as good, although Wizkidz have been doing some fun stuff with translucent effects & detachable components in Heroclix. There’s also the fun factor to consider: I’m a comics fan and get a major kick… Read more »
Mage Knight and Mechwarrior were probably the most successful collectable mini games along with Clix. Frankly, I don’t think Monsterapolcalypse was that good a game, plus it did not appeal to existing Privateer players. Also, the World at War, World at Sea series has done fairly well.
Pandemic is being re-printed with an updated version; new artwork, translucent cubes and so on. An expansion is also on the way which will have the newer art style but will still be compatible with the old version (might need to sleeve some of the cards to hide the backs though due to the difference in styles).
With regards to the Grumpy Old Wargamers day, will there be different things going on each day? I’m going to have to start looking at hotels in the area and drive down for the weekend.
Got my Tau today, some from my local GW store and the rest posted out by Wayland this morning 🙂
Glad you enjoyed playing Citadels, and glad I brought it along for us all to play, count me in for the live game.
I’ve been playing this game for a long time now. It’s easy to learn and fun to play. Never played it with as many poeple though. I’ll have to give it a go one day! I will watch that live game for sure! I hope you have fun!
My 2p: I’ve enough unpainted stuff kicking around to start buying mystery booster packs.
If Privateer Press were to reboot Monsterpocalypse where you know what model you’re buying I’d be all over it.
My FLGS has 3 copies of the Tau codex, mine is reserved but I haven’t picked mine up yet.
Went to Gamesworkshop at Bluewater this morning.
They had 11 Ripetides, a dozen pathfinders, some bombers/fighters, Plenty of codexs, not alot of the single model release’s. Didn’t have any broadsides though.
Me thinks they sent all the stock they had for the online retailers here in the uk to the stores in the US since they changed there policy.
