Warhammer Fest 2022 – 40k Day One Preview Round-Up!
May 6, 2022 by fcostin
Warhammer Fest is in full swing, and if you haven't been logging on to the official Warhammer Twitch stream for the festivities: The first day of the event saw the grimdark universe of Warhammer 40k, focussing on a whole scope of upcoming previews including new characters, units and battle tomes.
Leagues of Voltann
The Leagues of Votann Hernkyn Pioneer Revealed // Warhammer
The Squats have only gone and got themselves a new Hover Trike during the announcements, filling that cup of nostalgia that you were expecting.
Hernkyn Pioneer Preview // Warhammer Community
Also known as the Hernkyn Pioneer Imperial Chopper, funky music aside - these upgraded trikes look a lot less Jigsaw and more engineering from the Imperium! Apparently rocking out with their first female kin for the Squats.
"It’s our first look at a female Kin, clad in a coat and goggles worthy of any aviating outrider. In the Leagues of Votann, when the clan-family calls, everyone answers." - Warhammer Community
Sadly not too much announced for the Leagues of Voltann, but great to know we can see the return of the Squats after their absence, gearing up to head to retail soon.
Chaos Space Marines
New Chaos Space Marines Revealed // Warhammer
Probably the biggest announcement that was made on the first day of the event, bringing a ton of new miniature previews for Chaos Space Marines, previewing those who have chosen to turn against the light.
Chaos Space Marines Preview // Warhammer Community
"Chaos commanders, get ready to field a veteran warband of hardened Chaos Space Marines, a horde of chanting Cultists guided by a Dark Apostle, a pack of Daemon Engines led by a Lord Discordant, or anything in between – or even start your own Black Crusade with Abaddon." - Warhammer Community
Where to even begin! Bringing forth mutated abominations to fit into any force. A new kit for the Possessed is underway, bringing some more beef - to the table and his stance; now standing taller on 40mm bases. There are more cultists incoming with new Accursed Cultists, Mutants, Torments, and a new HQ unit to cult up your cultists with the Dark Commune.
If you want a closer look at all of the reinforcements, be sure to check out the full catch up announcement at Warhammer Community.
Daemon Prince
Chaos Space Marines Daemon Prince Revealed // Warhammer
A full preview of a Daemon Prince model was previewed for Age of Sigmar slightly before the event, with a little underwhelming feedback and quite a lot of fans prefer the previous model - we have received more updates on how this beast can be built. Not just for the Mortal Realms, but for any - encased in a dual kit to be customised to your liking and to your chosen game with a variety of building accessories.
Face Options // Daemon Prince Preview
"With different options to pay homage to each of the four dark gods, or Chaos Undivided! You’ll note that he bears some of the marks of his former existence as a Chaos Space Marine, now rippling and twisted into a horrifying new form." - Warhammer Community
Certainly not referred to as a miniature at any stretch - this beastly boy is not due out for a while, but Warhammer have of course teased the huge and impressive bit of kit.
Chapter Approved
If you are keen on changing up your game this season, Chapter Approved: War Zone Nephilim will be making some major tweaks to Command points.
Chapter Approved: War Zone Nephilim // Warhammer 40k
Players will be starting each game with their armies holding half the points which you are used to, bringing more tactics into play. There are chances to gain extra command points during gameplay to anticipate and strategize on your toes.
Points updates will be free as of this new season of Warhammer 40,000! You’ll be able to get them in Warhammer 40,000: The App and right here on the Warhammer Community website. - Warhammer Community
Chapter Approved Artwork Preview // Warhammer Community
The book will contain secondary objectives for all armies, which have apparently been balanced out for more enjoyment in games and allowing the armies without a codex to join in on the havoc.
World Eaters
Huge World Eaters News // Warhammer
The final announcement made for the first day was the confirmation of the World Eaters Codex, as you see that they have not been previewed alongside the other armies of Chaos as they are to be removed from the codex and given their own and a new set of minis alongside. Khorne Berzerkers
Warhammer Community has said that we are quite far off of the release of the XII Legion's codex. But there are soon to be rules provided in White Dwarf with a new Index Hereticus to tide your over until that book is in hand.
"The codex will contain old favorites, dark legends, and some things that you’ve never seen before - Warhammer Community"
Chainaxe Preview // Warhammer Community
Although no specific look at upcoming miniatures, we did get a look at the Khorne Berzerkers' roaring chain axes that will be ripping their way into 40K alongside the upcoming codex.
Warhammer Fest Schedule // Warhammer Community
That's it for 40K folks, other than the new show announced on Warhammer+, Angels of Death! Spanning over four days, each individual day is themed to a game system - or several. With Age of Sigmar next, Kill Team, Warcry and Necromunda today and finally finishing the event with The Horus Heresy. Which will be hosted on Saturday at Warhammer World for a final huzzah for the event.
Is there anything that has caused your eyes to sparkle from the 40k announcements this year at Warhammer Fest?
"Where to start? New characters, units and battle tomes?!"

It’s weird… the more complex and intricate G’Wullu makes its model the less I am interested. It’s like an overkill. There is just nothing in it for me.
Same. Opinions will vary but there’s nothing here to tickle my fancy.
I would tend to agree. Too many competing details just confuses the eye, with nothing specific to focus on. Plus it ends up making most things look kinda the same.
@sundancer I tend to feel the same funnily enough. Maybe it is our age and generation. We grew up up with a different aesthetic. The chaos stuff especially I do not like. Nonetheless I do like the grav-trike. The rotundness of it tickles my fancy.
Could be an age thing but then again I know people similar to my age that love the new stuff. Well, people will buy it either way 😉
True.
Some good interesting figures but Dutch would not be impressed with that chopper.
that chopper is like a flying car with its top removed …
or a fancy WW1 era plane without wings .
It feels over engineered to fit a profile.
The chaos cultists do look nice. They’d make for good alien crews for stargrave.
IT is weird to see chaos get such a uniform look and feel.
IMHO it should be more chaotic, more random. Like orks no two troops should even look alike.
Those do look really good.
Im just going to say it, I know it will be controversial…. That is a fat Halfling. There I said it. I just do not get any dwarven feel from that model at all. If you told me it was a heavy set hobbit looking halfling, I would be like yep that’s what it is. Just no dwarven flair. Not saying this is good or bad. I assume alot of people will like it. Just not me. I want my dwarves to feel dwarven. Thats just a personal preference though. Also, I dont get much of an army feeling from… Read more »
Love the new Chaos stuff, although I mightn’t have a use for much of it.
Codex World Eaters has me very excited though. I have almost a full army waiting in my ‘to-do’ pile so a proper codex would be a great excuse to get them going.
I can also cross my fingers and toes and hope that, like the previous two Legion codexes, World Eaters comes with a shiny Primarch. A 40k Angron would be amazing!
The new chaos models are amazing. I think the sense of progression the in fall to chaos with each set being more grim than the last. It reflects more the original art style it is not just humans with spike armour but the random nature of the warp. The Dark Commune is perhaps the ones I like the most. Each unqiue in its own way but fits together in a evil commanding force. The squat bike is a little unexpected I dont know if I like it or not I guess perhaps a little old school for the trikes. The… Read more »
