Warhammer Fantasy & 40,000 Herald The Coming Of Daemons
February 25, 2013 by brennon
Now we've all had a moment or two to look over the new models we can look at them with a bit more detail. Let's have a run down of the new miniatures for both Daemons of Chaos and Chaos Daemons by Games Workshop...
First up we have the massive tomes you will be taking to the tabletop. As always they look like they are very lavish books with hard covers and full colour artwork throughout.
This time around they have also released a selection of limited edition rulebooks, the Nurgle one of which is shown above. I have to say that regardless of what they are giving me I would much rather see the artwork from the new books on there than the John Blanche illustrations.
Personal preference in this case but this is one occasion where less doesn't mean more.
Next up we have a look at the miniatures which I consider to be the cream of this new release. I was looking over these a week or so ago and was somewhat undecided but now I have seen some better images they truly do look pretty amazing.
My favourite of the four has to be the Herald of Khorne. I have always maintained that the Bloodletters were some of the best kits Games Workshop had ever put out, and creating a bigger one to lead others into battle seems like a good choice.
The Herald of Nurgle and Slaanesh both have their merits but don't seem as dynamic as the new Herald of Khorne. I would consider just using Festus the Leech Lord as your Nurgle leader and the Masque for a Slaanesh horde.
Last and not least is the Herald of Tzeentch aboard his floating chariot. This is certainly the better of the two combinations you can make with the kit as it gets rid of the strange fire yet keeps the magical nature intact.
I would consider removing him from the Chariot and keeping him on foot however.
Following on from that look at a Chariot we have three variants of the large kits above. I am still very much on the fence concerning the Blood Throne and Cannon of Khorne. Both kits look, odd and very out of synch with my vision of what Chaos would look like. But, this is a daemonic creation from the realm of madness so maybe it makes sense to someone!
The Burning Chariot, in my opinion at least, is a bit of a mess. I don't like the fire effects coming out of the stand at the back of the chariot or belching forth from the flamers mouth. If I was modelling it I would look to get rid of those and hope it still stood up.
Finally we have the miniatures that have probably caused the most uproar and dissent. I can certainly see where people are coming from as these Plague Drones don't look anything like anyone thought.
I would be removing the riders, who just look strange mounted as they are. Then do away with the trunk too and create some sort of sucking maw in its place. Once those two things are sorted I'd consider summoning them from the warp.
I think I know the answer to this question already but...
What do you think of this new release?

A fairly uninspired release this IMO but i actually quite like the Plague Drones. The heralds are a bit ‘meh’. They could have been something much more special. I’ll be picking up the drones and Nurgle herald tho. I’ll buy anything nurgle tho to be fair. 🙂
Actually I like the plague drones. I would also kick the stupid riders into the silly bin of shame. Why GW insist on having riders straddle monsters in such a way is beyond me. Guaranteed to go arse over tip from that saddle old fruits. Possibly why their faces look so mushed up. Nowt to do with nurgly stuff. Just the effects of good old Newtonian physics. Hello. You are a demon aren’t you. Thought so. Long pointy tongue lolling out like the doctor has asked you to say, “AHHHHH!” while she shine a torch in your gob. Yeah. Tonsillitis… Read more »
oh for the love of an edit button to correct errors
The drones would have been stunning if not for the riders as you say. Why do GW do this? I wonder if the original sculpt was just the insect demon, then someone came along and said “do you know what this needs? A rider straddling it and sticking out like a soar thumb, like those rubbish marauder looking models riding steeds of slannash, more BS like that please! thanks!”
This is hilarious.
And the only good models are £15 finecast which look almost the same as the command models in their respective plastic kits.
Not too sure when GW became a parody of itself. Hopefully the Armies Books / Codex … even the £55 Douchebag edition …. will be good though. Let’s give the Soul Grinder skyfire instead of using our brains and creating a new demon which might deal with fliers.
The detail on some of those is almost at ‘fantasy regiments’ levels of poor.
I feel sorry for the parents being blackmailed into buying this badly sculpted rubbish.
Uninspired is right… And the paint-job isn’t too good either.
The models are all so stiff…
Once again, I’m put off by Tzeentch and Slaneesh models, and the Khorne and Nurgle ones are nothing to write home about.
The Heralds are almost exactly what you get from the regular plastic demon sprues with a few extras here and there.
Just seen a close up of the Nurgel drone flying thing, the paint job looks really bad! not to the standards one would expect from the Eavy Metal team. I get the feeling that they have been instructed to do a more basic paint job to draw in the inexperienced hobbyist
Yup very bland and uninteresting, even though everyone in my local store are getting excited about them. Some of the units look a little out of place fluff-wise (shooty unit of Khorne) and nothing else triggers off the Shiny Model Syndrome for me.
That middle chariot picture is clearly a motorbike. On a warhammer fantasy rectangular base. I think that says it all.
The top one also
Except everything about it says to me it will go flying backwards when the canon goes pop and the funny mouth thing shoots forth flames.
Thats why the base supplied, is hollowed out underneath. It allows you to put additional weight to the front of the mini to reduce such an effect. It also help the trajectory of the model go into the bin when you realise it is S&^T.
Any more life couching Chibi, giz a nod 😀

I’ve been thinking lately that GW’s new design direction is inspired by late 1970s Saturday morning cartoons. But some of these look more like MAD magazine (or Coop in the case of that ridiculous Burning Chariot). I literally laughed out loud when I finally scrolled down to those drones.
These aren’t bad. They’re awful. The cartoonish paint jobs aren’t helping any of them either. Kind of puts those horses from Privateer in perspective, doesn’t it?
Hear hear…
I dislike some of what PP has done lately, but if i’m honest, I have to say PP produces a pimple every time GW vomits a dozen warts.
TBH That Burning Chariot would be better if it was set alight and the moulds destroyed. Is not a good advert for GW. That guy with the 4 arms looks like those goofy plastic figures you could buy for a tanner (that’s 6d or 2 1/2p to the youngsters. Yes there was a 1/2 p coin) The flames do not look convincing which is not helped by some of sloppy painting. Locked inside their Citadel I feel that GW have still managed to go round in circles and have lost their way. IMHO I cannot agree that GW are the… Read more »
I would have liked a return to the old bull-headed Keeper of Secrets for the Slaanesh herald.
I do like the top disk rider though (not the weird blue flame one). I just think the actual model on the disk is a little meh…but on the whole, I think it looks brilliant.
I pretty much agree with the majority. The Heralds seem rushed and dont seem like much love has been put into them – they certainly dont look like £15 worth of model. I like the Tzeentch Herald chariot but the exalted flamer looks a right mess. The Khorne wacky races mobiles are horrible – what were they thinking. The drones would have been really cool but again it looks rushed and lazy the way a rider has been lumped on top. Not a great release – seems GW is trying to saturate th market with new models – shame they… Read more »
Also – looking at some of the release pages of the relative army books they have the pics of the old Greater Daemons so I would imagine the new ones are a way off.
I like the Daemon bundles where you don’t save any money at all …
It can’t be too long before GW start having special, “Buy Two pay for Three!” deals.
Sad thing is, there would be some think it perfectly acceptable.
Ah but you have to think outside the box @Poosh in order to understand GW’s caring community support. Having the one click bundles allows you to place orders slightly quicker, allowing you to turn off your computer quicker, thereby saving you pennies in the electricity meter and also repelling the effect of global warming. Sleep tight in the knowledge that GW is always looking at ways to ease your shopping experience and fund their R&D unit to create their new comic characters, change their paint range annually, a pay rise for the cleaner to come up with a new pricing… Read more »
I think the Khorne herald looks great but am not too impressed with the Nurgle and Slaanesh versions. I bought the Avatars of war version of the herald of Khorne though so I probably won’t be getting one (I also have Skulltaker too so definitely no need!). I absolutely love the Tzeentch chariot and will definitely be getting it, especially the moon face head option for the herald. I also think the flamer option looks pretty cool and love the paint job. From reading the White Dwarf article I can see what they were trying to achieve with the Khorne… Read more »
I like them all. I will own them all and I will play them all.
That’s what I said about the Sugarbabes,
Oh well, wish me luck, the hearing is next week. My lawyer says I will be alright with the judge if I just plead tone deafness and an allergy to lip gloss.
Again Chibi I bow down to your greatness. Just a shame I can only give you one thumbs up. I’ll have to put the other one in the post. 😉
You keep the sugerbabes entertained and ill sit here with the bloody jellybabes. Hehe.
37 and feel like an old man. Lol
37 bah still a spring chicken
(I’m 83 you know)
Siobhan Donaghy of the Sugarbabes is actually brilliant (well, she was the first to leave).
The cover art of these new releases is getting pretty damn good. Less cartony than it used to be. Good improvement. ^^
that’s true but a little too late if you were eye-raped with the Vamp Counts/Empire books …
Damn, that Khorne Throne/Canon look like what would happen if you take a cross between a mans privates and a Motorbike … if it where Deamonetts crawling around on it OK, but ‘letters no. – Will have to be proxied in maybe using the WoC Waralter.
I do like the letter on top of the Throne and could see him on to of a Jugger or in a real looking chariot as a Herald.
The Burning Chariot and Heralds a little meh. but I might take a few of them if/when needed in the list
Wow.
This is the first time I have seen GW release new mini’s for an army release that I have utterly disliked.
I can’t help but agree with the majority of the above comments.
Usually the new minis get me thinking of starting a new army, these have fueled my growing discontent with GW.
Someone has clearly lost the plot in Nottingham.
weak =/
The first miniature of the khorne herald in guessing? Really got me excited i thought it looked great. *Scrolls down the page* everything else looks unimaginative and plaing boring, are chariots trending or something seems to be alot of focus on developing new chariots all of a sudden. and the blight drones are just diseased slanesh fiends, lovely use of tracing paper GW. That said normally i do really highly regard GW miniatures and usually one of the first to defend new models but the last new releases (chaos, dark angels and now demons) it seems like the guy with all… Read more »
Those plague drones might make something cool for nids, use up some of those spare carnifex heads.
BOW Please do 40k and warhammer Daemon weeks!
