Darrell and Andy bust out their Heavy Gear forces for a quick and bloodthirsty throw down battle!
If you can spot any rules the guys missed or anything they did incorrectly, then post below. The guys have promised to make another rematch video if there is!

A battlereport?
A small step for 2 men, a big step for Beasts of War !
@raggbur It’s a demo game… if you want a battle report you need to see the Live Rounds show here:
http://www.beastsofwar.com/warhammer-40k/orks-vs-ultramarines/
I was at live rounds… I was the guy who kept talking about splitting into combat squads for the sternguard… And kept asking for a roll for the mysterious objectives…
Andy, I’m almost insulted you even consider that I’d miss a beasts of war live show!
🙂
With ‘battlereport’ I ment… Well, sthing non-live you know…
It was the same setup as in live rounds anyway
Nice fast play game
Wow, that looked… boring. You just rolled dice at each other, your guys didn’t move and Darrell lost his big thing before he could even move. This demo has completely put me off this game, and I own a starter army!
It did show the need for more cover on the board, if you slug it out on a big flat board most games are a bit like this – How would 40K look in that case ?
It’s true, but I would expect a game with less miniatures to rely more on synergy and tactics than gun line mentality. If this is not the way the game is supposed be played (in regard to terrain, force composition, etc.), then it is doing the game a disservice.
it really is doing the game a disservice because it certainly is not the way it’s supposed to be played, with a decent amount of terrain the game becomes much more fluid and tactical.
their forces while certainly not optimal were rather balanced, to a point, i get the feeling they mostly used them because they are sort of mirrored, there is nothing wrong with the forces they used though, they just weren’t the best choice for a demo battle in my opinion, the striders in particular are rather brutal especially without enough terrain.
Straight Up Brawls between two near-identical forces on Open terrain is going to give the automatic win to the man who wins Initiative. Most of the time tabletops should be around 4×4 or, at most, 4×6, but with lots of Concealment. Folks prefer using Representational Terrain to include Dense and Very Dense tree thickets, Heavy Concealment from buildings, Medium Concealment from smaller buildings, Light Concealment from the trees, and some Solid cover and elevation levels. Force composition is something you already are learning about from Priority Levels… depending upon the Priority Level of your army list, it limits what kind… Read more »
@rasmus @garwjenk @daredhnu … As I said, we realised that we needed more terrain, but we couldn’t use some of the big LoS blocking terrain as it not only blocked the model’s LoS, but the viewer too.
We took the GP units and the big Striders from the starter set you can download on PDF.
We’re keen to do another demo, as it did seem a bit brutal on Darrell and he’s already sulking… tell us what you want to see and we’ll try to put it into another game.
But remember… more terrain means it’s harder to see! 😉
A more repersertive game would be nice as well – I liked that it look like one of the muck up’s I would do to try to understand a ruleset, but a real game would be nice to see
I think, in cases like this, its best to go for the terrain and live with not seeing the actual minis too well, I enjoyed the video anyway, darrell losing his big thing in 30 seconds automatically makes this a legendary video , but a game with loads of scenery may display the game mechanics in a better light.
@nogginthenog … yep… that’s probably the only epic dice roll I’ve made on camera so far!
There was no way we were cutting it out! Darrell losing his Mammoth was just too good.
@beerogre don’t get me wrong i’m glad you guys are devoting some time to heavy gear, but in the future some more terrain would showcase the strengths of the game better even if it blocks our view a little it’s fine 😀 if you don’t show any of the cool things heavy gear blitz does better than other games it’s not going to entice anybody to play the game, so stuff like forward observing, indirect fire and the like are very important to showcase the tactical depth of the game, now i can understand wanting to keep things simple so… Read more »
Andy, if I might make a suggestion… one of the options in Heavy Gear Blitz! is to use ‘representational terrain’. I know that editing requires a lot of work on all your guys’ parts, so I appreciate you all really taking the time to throw down everything and show some of these guys how Heavy Gear is played. No, Heavy Gear is not ‘gun line mentality’. It’s got enough nuances in it to make new guys’ heads es-plode, but those nuances can be picked up later. Representational terrain would be good to go with, and perhaps a smaller table surface.… Read more »
@beerogre
ok it will be harder to see but i’m sure were all be able to follow the game
youll have to describe what we can’t see
Maybe you could introduce a commentator/ war correspondant. Warren could dress up as Kate Aidie.
Heavy Gear is really a great game. But it requires care and knowledge to demo properly, since it’s got so many little intricacies.
I know you guys try, but BoW’s really kinda phoning it in for this and other things. It hurts trying to get new people in such a great game without more seasoned people around to show off the coolest parts. But having a little more knowledge/experience about each game would go a long way.
Um… I don’t mean to barge in or anything, but if you can spot something that the guys missed in the rules, or something they shouldn’t have done because that’s not allowed or that doesn’t happen in a game, you’re very welcome to point it out…
I believe Andy has said so twice already, and that’s what the comments are for.
We’ll be glad to film another game if this one isn’t quite cricket !
a top down view camera plus your current setup may help with seeing stuff…but that does need a bit more setup. Even better a movable camera…so only need a minimum of 3 cameras!! 😉
Reminds me of inifinity, a great game that needs a lot of terrain unless you want to die very quickly
I imagine using only a single camera allowed them to do it quick and easy without edits (I have no idea how difficult and/or time consuming video editing is). The top down, zoomed out, could still work for start of turn positions, the extra marker dice, etc, should allow us to still spot the models.
editing can be a long and painful happening so im not surprised they went for a simple one angle setup
Since the game is quick to play, I hope you guys will consider doing another run with some more terrain and such to show off some more of the rules and the mobility the units can have. Appreciate the bare bones demo, all the same, and the consideration given to the camera view.
Um…assuming you are using the stats from the free starter PDF, you are doing some things wrong in just the first 3.5 minutes! A) The Mammoth should have rolled 3 defense dice as its defense value is 3. B.) 3 x25 damage is only 3 damage boxes as the Mammoth’s armour is 25, so the Mammoth was not dead, but rather LIGHTLY damaged. It would have taken a MOS of 5 to immediately destroy the Mammoth. C.) The Mammoth’s Reinforced Armor (f 2) was not taken into consideration so the Mammoth’s front armour is actually 27, so 3 x25 damage… Read more »
It’s not often to see Darrell die a little bit inside halfway through turn 1 of a game…. Congratulations Andy 🙂
makes up for the 40k live round 😉
poor old mr cheese, gets so much stick at times but he and andy are top of the pops IMO
If mixing in a topdown camera with the normal view is too time consuming how about a big mirror strip across the back of the board to “see behind” the terrain. Or just have a higher/topdown view and when each of you is talking stick some ID tags/avatar pics at the appropriate side so non-regulars can still follow who is who and what they’re currently doing.
Representational terrain is fine, jabbaa. No need to cover up everything with lots of stuff (that would slow down the game some for them)… if they want to play a little fast and loose, using some stand-ins for thick trees and several larger boulders (rocks, mind you, I don’t want to see Darrell bring in a 50-pound boulder to smash apart Andy’s miniatures ;)) would work well, and still show off how Concealment and Cover differ and make a difference in how you gain Line of Sight and also avoid incoming direct fire.
Love the short demo. The mammoth was still alive as stated before and more terrian is needed.
Some of the forward units should have advanced while using cover while the rest provided some covering fire.
The problem is, this review was not at all representative at all. Standing there and shooting in Heavy Gear actually DOESNT DO ANYTHING in the way the game is really played. With actual terrain, it becomes a dogfight of maneuver, where gears skate and run and dodge around corners, flanking, overtaking and eliminating enemies in coordinated assaults. Two gears standing and exchanging fire will result in no damage. — Instead of standing in little craters and shooting, what should have happened if one side stood still, was the other grinds their treads and curves around cover to cover, until they… Read more »
Not the best demo of the game in parts but shows the range and lethality of gears nicely. Plus high production standard as normal
I asked at my local store re Hvy Gear and they dont currently stock it. Battletech is popular with a small group so this may also be right up their alley.
i look forward to other test games and more coverage
I have to agree with earlier posts that this looked a bit static and dull.
Short, but fun
It seems like a dull game hardly any moving, what is that all about?
BoW didn’t know how to play and gave a TERRIBLE Demo. There’s a lot of rules inaccuracies, and quite frankly, that demo was very misrepresentative. See my above comments for more details.
The game is ABOUT maneuver. And they didn’t move! What the hell.
Probably should have skipped the demo video if they were so pressed for time they couldn’t put together a proper demo. HG is a more complex game than most once you get past the basic dice rolling, in fact its basic dice rolling mechanic is pretty tame. Not sure what the business of these videos and promo weeks are, but I can’t see DP9 being happy with such a poor showing of their game. Don’t worry about terrain so much either. Just keep an eye on the monitor after you move a model to make sure the camera can see… Read more »
Another video is needed to make up for this one please go all out on the next one guys and show the game really plays
Crappy demo. This demo is the paper/rock/sissors to the regular Heavy Gear Blitz game of chess. Guys, step up or give up. Read the rules and actually learn them!
