thanks guys, i’ve asking a lot about this one.
Very good question to ask. The Tau book can be… complicated at times and I’ve seen many players get things wrong, particularly with wargear, partially because vehicle upgrades and infantry wargear can have the same name but different effects. Take the Target Lock for example, on vehicles it allows all weapons on the vehicle to fire at different targets but the infantry version only allows the bearer to fire at a different target from the rest of the unit.
Overly complicated for no reason IMHO, one of the main reasons they should get a new codex.
i have a small 500 point tau army (sorting out other army at the moment) which have 3 fire warrior squads in each with markerlight and target lock the idea being that sqad A can mark enemy X with marker light squad B mark enemy Y and squad C mark enemy Z then squad A shots at enemy Z, squad B shots enemy X and squad C shots enemy Y all of them useing each others marker light.
Don’t forget though, all firing by a unit must be done at the same time. So while the guy with the targetlock can fire at a separate target the rest of the unit have to fire on their target at the same time.

As per Darell’s impression that the model is holding two weapons, I think that would confuse some. The way to look at the marker light is like a real life marker light that the U.S. and some other armies use. A high power green military laser is fitted to a service rifle. They flip the laser on and keep it pointed in the area of the target they want the smart bomb/missile to hit. All the while they can still pull the trigger to fire the weapon.
