Its all about tailoring your list so that your not playing to the strength of your opponent.
What about for Grey Knights? They don’t have access to Devastator Squads to spam Missile Launchers (yes, there is the Purgation Squads, but the range is only 24″), and their Terminators can’t take Storm Shields.
How would you go about vs Eldar/Dark Eldar with Grey Knights then? Lots of Deep Striking units?
@paedan Autocannon Dreadnoughts with Psybolt Ammunition would probably be the way to go for long range fire support. for 135 points you get 4 twin-linked strength 8 ap 4 shots with a 48″ range.
Just one of these is nasty. More than one is just plain cruel.
Using both Venerable and regular Dreadnoughts, you can get 6 of these for 990 points
Tailoring lists to an opponent is a luxury you often won’t (and imo shouldn’t) have. With Eldar and Dark Eldar the advice that Landraiders are not really a good investment is correct. I would maybe reserve it to make it come on when you’ve hopefully thinned out their anti-tank power and get the termi’s to footslog or deepstrike. Dark Eldar in particular are such an alpha-strike type of force that reserving stuff becomes a powerful tactic against them that is criminally underused. If their stuff hits hard but is fragile why would you not ensure you get the first shots… Read more »
Given that most eldar (as with most armies) run mech foot-slogging TH/SS won’t be great as they would just be avoided.
Also, the heavy bolter won’t be any use against eldar vehicles as most are 12/12/10, I guess that was more for the dark eldar
@Paedan psycannons are scary to eldar, S7 lots of shots is the sweet spot (hydras are our biggest fear given metal form lol)
@Paedan: Grey Knights have plenty of stuff, remember Purgation Squads may only have a 24” range with their psycannons but can also move & fire as 2 shot assault weapons and GK’s have access to dreadnoughts, bombardments, conversion beamers etc. Against Eldar all the anti-psyker weaponry is enough to scare your opponent whose effectiveness will be reduced without Warlocks and Farseers – unless they are running a pure Aspect army of course : ) I agree with D. Missile Launcher’s still remain one of the best choices a Devastator/Tactical Squad can take, although I am developing a fetish for Plasma… Read more »
I likes Lascannons..
I think this tactic on how to beat Eldar was left out: Destroying mobility is key to ruining your Eldar (dark too) opponent’s game. LRs are pretty rubbish in general unless of course you’ve got a Templar LR Crusader with Blessed Hull, then you have no worries what-so-ever.
Have to agree with Darrell, missile launchers are great all round heavy weapon against most troops and light to medium armored vehicles but like warspawned I do have a soft spot for a Plasma Cannon.
some good tips, good stuff!
@paedan A grey knight terminator with just a nemesis force sword has a 4+ invulnerable save. So you shouldnt have to worrry to much, also you will have storm bolters instead of the stormshield giving you 2 shots to fire at an eldar unit. The main thing that should be taken to account aginst DE is that they pretty much all have a 5 up armour save which is denid by the bolters or flamers so try to fit as many as you can in yor grey knights list.
NO NO NO!!!…all wrong, im an experienced eldar player, and have dabbled in dark eldar. Any foot based marine army is just easy prey allows eldars 36″ moving transports to choose where and when they strike… At least make them have to go through armour 1st, plus banshees, fire dragons, lances, pulse lasers, prism cannons and even bladestorming avengers will tear terminators apart. The key to taking on eldar is numbers….they only have so much anti-tank firepower lots of rhinos and razorbacks is very hard to deal with (as craftworld eldar) im talking LOTS, at least 8 transports. Play the… Read more »
As a dark eldar player I find it very hard to deal with mech forces. I cant rely on lances anymore, because iven if I take 12-15 or more lances, they normally dont hit! You have to roll a 3, then a 5 then a 5 or 6 to destroy a vehicle, so theyre only good for suppressing vehicles with other results which you can get easily from haywire blasters. (unless the opponent is very mobile like a mech eldar force). The real anti-tank power is in CC for DE, especially the talos, but its very very hard to get… Read more »
Rocket Devastators are complete garbage, I’d never take them. Likewise, Stormhammer Terminators are only going to be useful if you see an Avatar or Talos in the field. Regular Terminators are even worse, they get curb-stomped by Incubi/Banshees/Harlies. You’ll probably wanna get some kind of Outflanking happening to negate the Dark Eldar’s nightshield hax, and to ensnare Craftworld Eldar (once they’re boxed in you can whittle them down). I like Khan for this, he’s an excellent combat character in his own right, and him+Biker Command squad kitted out with plasma guns, storm shield and lightning claw (powerfist on one for… Read more »
A footslogging army against Eldar/Dark Eldar is a bit like offering your opponent a free win.
Both armies are much too mobile for that to work unless you’re playing against a very inexperienced player…
