Studio McVey Release Limited Edition Miniature
September 22, 2011 by dracs
Studio McVey have a new addition to their Limited Edition Resin series. Meet Katya.
This is an absolutely brilliant miniature from Studio McVey and I think that it is a more than worthy addition to their range. In short I want one.
So do you guys like the look of this miniature? Are there any gaming uses for it that you can think of?

that’s excellent – brilliant pose
Do want 🙂
A nice Yuan Yuan proxy for Infinity I’d say.
Gratz to the guys at Studio McVey
yet another winner
Its a great sculpt and very innovative pose, but I really fail to see why this needs to be a premium piece. It looks like something that would easily blend in to reaper’s chronoscope line. For that matter why make a great model limited edition in the first place? Share your art with the world, not just the first 750 people. It also gets under my skin how overhyped these models get. I have nothing but respect for the artists working for studio McVey, especially the man himself, but why do their limited releases -as great as they are- get… Read more »
To be fair if you haven’t had one of their mini’s in your hand then I can see why you would find it hard to understand why they receive so much praise. The quality of the casting and the detail on them makes Finecast look like it was sculpted by a blind monkey imo and although they are on the higher side cost wise they aren’t all that much more expensive than Finecast. I just purchased The Dark Emissary for £24.99 which I consider good for a limited model when compared to the Chaos Lord On Deamonic Mount from GW… Read more »
Absolutely. The McVey minis are worth EVERY penny. And then some.
Which is more than you can say for Finecast and its ilk…

To be fair I’ve never seen a finecast model in person either -I don’t even know anyone that plays GW’s games any more. I’ll take you guys’ word for it on the level of detail. There are many things the camera doesn’t capture so I can see why certain details would be obscured.
I have seen them. They don’t compare.

What’s more, some of their limited releases get re-cast in their main range.
This one is generic enough that it may yet happen…

I think she’d do well in Infinity. How can I squeeze her into my Haqq army, hmmm?
Odalesque possibly? Or maybe a hassassin Muyib
She could even be a Nomad… Pretty much the same equipment.
I wonder about the scale, though…
BoW Romain
Good innovate concept for model, good rifle to body ratio, neutral pose, improbable but not unlikely especially with small calibre ammo, horribly big knife, grenades and rifle magazine pouch, why? the model is otherwise in scale, why a knife holder that is as wide or wider than the assault rifle? I can understand the magazine pouch, but the grenades too are too big the concept on their blog have them in scale, the fast descend harness ring is also a bit big.
You might thing it is harsh, but this is a limited release collectors resin cast.
Unless it’s a big ass knife 😉 But you’re right. When comparing this mini to the Kara’s Last Stand, Katya slips a little too much on the fantastic side. It doesn’t help that she’s firing an assault rifle with one hand and wearing high heels. There are some nice touches to Katya, like the figure eight decender and the rope is modelled correctly. I like the pose, but the said stuff stucks out too much and spirals the mini from superb to mediocre. All in all, I don’t think this is much of a gaming miniature. The rope just looks… Read more »
It’s a Swiss Army Machette
More like a cleaver 😉
Nice, I can even see her as a member of the 1st Highland SAS, but I agree with @psychoticstorm that the knife does stand out in the size like a biker at a nuns convent
The zip line is good idea.
Anyone who has fired an assault rifle, knows that pose is ridiculous.
That aside, it is a really cool pose. 😀
would’ve looked a lot nicer (and realistic) with a pistol instead of the AK47
Given the quality of the sculpts and casting they are not expensive
The one I have, including packaging and postage, was cheaper than a Finecast blister.
Some of the limited editions have not sold out which suggests those that really want them get them.
Suspect this will be popular so get it while you can
It is annoying to miss out as I have done on a beautiful model, but my fault for prevaricating.
Moral of the story: Dither ye not!
Plus this is the first model in the history of wargaming to perform the Indian rope trick afaik
I think one of the other posters here mentions that this is a miniature for collectors, for painting and display! I agree, and I think it’s a great model. Now why, o’ why doesn’t Studio McVey make 54mm scale minis! I mean, if they really intedn these pieces to be display pieces is 28mm scale really an ideal display scale? Firstly you have to exaggerate things like grenades etc so that they show up on a mini this size, and of course, to justify the status of limited miniature (costing a pretty penny) they have to make it detailed enough… Read more »
Infinity has shown that this is not the case and models do not need to be heroically proportioned in 28-300 mm for detail to show, going further back the plastic modelling hobby has shown years before CB that that similarly scaled miniatures do not need to have either exaggerated proportions or equipment for it to show on the model.
Having limited runs is advantageous, as the moulds don’t have time to wear out, so you know you’re getting perfectly cast miniatures. Every peice i’ve gotten from mcvey has been completely free of mouldlines of any degree.
The more I see this the more it stands out. She must have a hormone imbalance as thats some big sideburns she has 😛
She’s really Elvis.
Elvis didn’t die, he just had a sex change and joined the SAS.
Swinging Absailling Singers?
Thank you very much /Elvisimpersonation
Doh!
Why does it always sound more like Tommy Cooper than Elvis when I do that!? 🙁
What? When you do it *jus’likethat*
🙂
lol
she’s gonna do the cut a rope, tie them together, trick
Rope, knife, knife, rope huhuhuhu
Color me impressed.
One two three…
‘Mickymoo can do the do, and NOTHING he EVER does is POO!’
Still true all these years laters, God Bless Mr McVey and all who work with him!
