Darrell thinks he can completely nerf one of the Dark Eldar Tactics!

I would say the cheesemeister at its best. I can just picture the discussions we arer going to have in our gaming group when will do this to our dark eldar player…this is going to be hilarious^^
I just cannot fathom how the European tourney folks came to the conclusion that blocking a free entry point for anything in reserve is more cheesy than being able to place an impassible terrain piece wherever you want that you can use to bring in anything in reserve without scatter.
Darrell, I can see a couple of issues with your tactic.
1. If you surround the portal, you still wouldn’t be blocking any of the flyers or skimmers that can enter ; hellions, reavers, talos etc, as they would simply be ‘flying’ over you, right?!
2. Your sitting on top tactic would work great, IF, the player is using a flat marker. However, any serious DE player should be using a hemisphere like the official marker, thus making it FAR harder to balance models on top.
And now you can buy yourself beautiful vortex markers for Storm of Magic! The hemisphere markers are the first thing I see when I visualise the webway portal.
I think it is stated in the rules that you have to use a template, but I am not sure right now have to look it up.
Neither is a problem. 1. The model’s base, the area the model theoretically occupies, must be in contact with the portal when it enters play (IIRC), so being a skimmer should make no difference to whether it can enter play. 2. In the rulebook (I forget which page) a special exception is made for circumstances where a model should be able to move somewhere, but cannot balance in that location, allowing it to be placed nearby but counting as being in its intended place. Even with a hemispherical portal you can just say your model is on top of it,… Read more »
The point is, weather they fly ,skim or float if there within the rang then they cant enter play. Whats more is skimmers all “LAND” at the beginning and end of the movemnent phases so that dosent really work either.. so yeah.. makes sence that you can block with troop or a skimmer 🙂
Well that was pretty damn cheesy haha…although I do find it a little un-sportsmanly, if that’s even a word lol. Ah well, will have to see how this pans out.
unsportsmanlike? 😀
Well theres the cheese now wheres my toast?! 😀
Yes you are on top but you can stil move out as a Dark Eldar player, it counts as the edge of the board and unless you can park youre skimmer outside the board it doesnt work.
Just wanna say… Nomnomnooom.
They have to be in base to base contact with the portal, so if the entire edge of the portal is within 1 inch of an enemy unit, then they cannot be moved to that location, and therefore cannot enter play.
They can only move after they have entered play.
that only works for ground based units. any model that can fly (e.g. flyers, skimmers, jetbikes, ect.) are still able to move passed the unit and come on from reserve according to the FAQ.

I’m not seeing it in the rulebook or DE FAQs, is it in a different one?
They don’t have to be touching the edge of the base do they? I thought the whole idea was they could move from it and they’d be okay so long as they finished their move not within 1” of a model – so surrounding it would be okay if you blocked all avenues of movement but putting a skimmer on top of it wouldn’t work – and it makes no sense…oh wait in GW’s world a Gretchin could still assault a fast moving jet fighter…so it may make sense 😉 I’d say it’s not in the spirit of the game,… Read more »
Ravager is not a transport BOW GET YOUR DARK ELDAR REFERENCES RIGHT DAMNIT
Furthermore, Darrell is being REALLY cheesy here with the skimmers, I would not approve of others using tactics that cheesy against me. Even though I don’t go to the ETC either 😛
There are 2 ways i can think of around this uber cheese. 1) Grab the limited edition portal thing from GW or make your own non-flat one and claim that the bike/skimmer must be able to balance ontop of this impassable terrain to be able to park there. 2) jump infanty and bikes of your own have the ability to ignore other models and terrain so have them pop out of the portal :P.
1) stick blue tack on the base job done 🙂
BoW Justin
And that has what to do with good sportsmanship? 😉
not much but im betting thats what Darrell would do 🙂
BoW Justin
Ha!. That makes it even worse! XD
Clearly you can’t find words like fair play and sportmanship from Darrell’s dictionary.
Oh they’re in there they just have different definitions to the ones the rest of us use. 🙂
While I’m all for good sportsmanship I can’t deny that a good cheese sandwich is fun every now and then. Even if you not serious about it a good WTF stare from an opponent can be priceless. Keeps ’em on their toes.
What’s to stop the Dark Eldar player from paring a vehicle over the portal just the same way? Wouldn’t that be an allied vehicle, and thus not count with regards to moving onto the board? I know Dark Eldar stuff is fragile, but it would seem that if I’m there, shooting your dudes before they can get to my portal, my guys can come out. Of course, I’m not as up on 40K rules as others. Poor sportsmanship to say the least, as others said. Personally, were this done to me, I’d forfeit and never game with the person who… Read more »
Isn’t this tactic flawed? The rule says “your units arriving from reserve may move onto the board from the portal marker’s edge”. Doesn’t this basically mean I can exit it as long as I end up more than 1″ away from an opponent? What about Reavers and Hellions? If I remember correctly the FAQ said you can enter the board from reserves if you would normally be able to fly over your opponent and in cases of vehicles tank shock (I know they cannot exit the webway). So if you surround my webway can’t I basically just fly over you… Read more »
If you park a skimmer over the portal and it gets destroyed would you be cheesy enough to claim you now replace the portal with a crater?
that cracked me up ^^
Good point, but wrecked would be a better result, as the vehicle remains in place, but becomes impassable terrain itself.
If most of your opponent’s army is in reserve it might be worth crashing a wave serpent or something on top of it.
wrecked vehicles become difficult or dangerous terrain depending on the penetration result, but never impassible terrain.
Right you are, pardon me.
But basically this case shows how important it is to treat the hobby seriously in its entirety and model your portal. I did a portal for my Craftworld Eldar some time ago (for specific scenarios) from a bit of cardboard: http://www.wargaminghobby.com/article/eldar-webway-portal-4.html
Try to balance your models on top of that!
A bit too cheesy to pull in a friendly game for me, but a very nice smelling bit of cheese there.
Ultramarine Eldar Necron Alliance? I know you’re kidding Darrel, but lets not give Matt Ward any ideas, okay? I beg you BOW team, take this video down until after the Necron release. Please, don’t help Ward ruin any more of what we love.
Ok here is the thing. Darrel is right guys. Why there are so many people here that think he is wrong or are trying to find some fault with his tactic is beyond me. And if that wasnt enough, its a move officially recognised and also BANNED from euro tourns. So yes, you park something there, or suround it and nothing is getting out.
Another counter to this is (not going with arguments here) is to have a Webway cone shaped. The skimmer must be able to land on it wich is impossible with a cone shape.
This is what i mean
http://www.webdesign.org/img_articles/1074/cone.jpg
for those of you saying that if its a cone or the half sphere the tactic wouldn’t work check your rule book for the rule on wobbly model syndrome.
Bah, Who deploys it like that? Though, a wraith? I’m quite sure it says that you cannot stay on an impassable terrain somewhere in the rulebook… Then again… most likely a Space Marine complaining. Let’s not complain that a bolter can take down a Raider shall we?
I’ll park a Monolith over it….
It saddens me to see cheese tactics (as crazy as they are sometimes!) more than standard tactics, but what can you do with 40k (and especially the Cheesemeister himself at the wheel). The game needs a serious overhaul and rules clarification for 6th edition. Rules need to be clear for what you can do and what you can’t do. Areas of gray really shouldn’t exist. As far as the WWP deployment, it’s best to drop it outside 12″ of the enemy, as most DE units you’d want to bring out of a WWP have fleet so they can get in… Read more »
Makes me take up my old raiders again and have there points hover above the portal, no dangerous terrain check but enemy skimmer cant move over it as he gets within 1″ of my models.
This anti portal cheese could be used to controll the opponents army btw, just throw 2 or 3 in the open and see the opponent scurry over there, easy targets i would say.
uhhh Darrel just because you don’t test doesn’t mean you can stop on top of impassable terrain actually it specifically says they cannot stop in impassible terrain.
To me the dark eldar pulled a cheese out of their codex. Why not answer their cheese with more of for cheese? Sounds like a “i can do one better than you” thing to me
