Save the Captain – MWG Stop-Motion Animation!
December 12, 2011 by lloyd
Dave form MiniWarGaming has been busy for a month on the production of this Stop-Motion Animation… it’s almost like Ardman Animation has moved into 40K!
But as the production for the 1:30 min animation takes such a long time, Dave is curious to know what you guys think of it. Primarily did it entertain you and would you watch more?
If it’s something you think he should keep doing drop your thoughts in a comment below.

Hmm, I think he needs to go back to what-ever he was doing before hand…….
It’s awesome enough but I prefere stop motion to have less computer effects; more cotton wool. I’ve seen entire batreps done in stop motion and been fully impressed before.
As for minwargamingdave, good to see you’re keeping yourself busy with new projects, plenty of old terrain and stuff in your archives so you should continue with such stop motion projects simply to keep YOURSELF entertained.
Its ok, I thought it was a little boring for the first minute but it picked up for the last few seconds.
Do you know what program he is using to make this? If BeastsofWar wanted to do somthing like this drop the guys at stopmotion pro (http://www.stopmotionpro.com) a line. They are really nice bunch of people and normal give away free copies of the program in return for some advertising!
I dont work for them by the way, just a fan of the company!
He said in the video that he is using Adobe After Affects.
Aardman it is not. A reasonable first effort, but not really anything worth writing home about so to speak. Too much shinny effects to cover for little actual animation.
My girlfriend is a teacher and uses stop motion alot, I asked her if she would ever use any of mine or her own 40k minis but she said the lack of moving parts would make it difficult and boring. I suspect this is why Dave has gone all flash but is lacking any bang.
Meh, maybe if he pinned all the parts and moved them between shoots, but otherwise waste of time. Make battlereps instead.
I think Dave should try magnetizing his bits to allow posing of the arms and such. He could also take a tip from “Robot Chicken” and give his characters mouths. Maybe even look into Dragonframe stop motion software if he’s really serious about all this.
Not bad Dave, no drunken Tau I see however? Hmmm.
The best part was when the captain walked into the landraider. His waddle was just so funny. I had a friend that tried to do animation with a comic book and that was crap. This is a masterpiece compared to others I’ve seen. The goofier the better IMO.
i thought it was really cool, and i’d like to see more. i liked the effects. i do think pinning, or magnets could add a lot of life, maybe not pouths but a glowing vox grill to indicate the speaker. my advice- its all about the story. you hafta start there- good story. the visuals are not that impt. look at south park! so take your pick from the lexicon of GW fiction. id love to see a boarding action. kudos. do another one, get a sponsor! i think you could make 4 sets of legs for each character and… Read more »
It’s almost as entertaining as Ultramarines: The Movie.
The plots pretty much the same just condensed ;p
Good video but marines are vanilla and boring in narrative in my opinion (videos and books!). How about an Ork one as they are really strong characters, or neurotic necrons that I would love to see 🙂
You can have all the flash bang whiz pow graphixy hoo ha your cpu can churn, but without a story, you’ve got dog breath flavored toe jam on poop toast. And the whine plead at the end was just blech!
Not too bad, I thought the marines were too military in their dialogue and not quite churchy enough but then so were some of the DoW ones.
The walking animation was a little comical but then again it’s a wargames figure.
the after effects are pretty impressive but the stop motion lets it down a fair bit
