Forge World might just get me to start an IG army
March 7, 2011 by lloyd
I was recently on the Forge World site, looking at the Cadian Hostile Environment Conversion Sets and found myself completely drawn in by the Imperial Guard Sabre Defence Platforms.
If you take a look at the pics, I think you will understand why.
Now, I’m a Tau player, but the more I look at the amount of cool goodies there are for the Guard, the more I think it’s time I expanded my forces.
Up until now, I've collected Tau, mainly because I wanted to steer clear of the mainstream Imperial armies... well mainly staying away from Space Marines I guess!
This includes Chaos, as at their core they're just "spiky Space Marines" and Space Marines just don't interest me, as they're all over the place. We have three Marine armies in the studio alone!
With this in mind, I've been wondering why I have been leaning towards collecting the Guard, as they seem to be all over the place too! In fact I use to think of them as the most boring army in 40K, but something in me has changed.
So what can it be, is it because while John's at Uni I'm no longer greeted EVERY morning with the words “Come and look at my new tank” or more likely tanks or could it be that Forge World are getting stuck in and expanding their range so much? (By the way John the new set you have in the studio are pretty damn good!)
Well... I can confirm now that it’s the latter!
Once you start browsing round the IG section on Forge World it’s hard not to get excited by the likes of the Elysian Tauros Venator (that’s a mouth full) and the Death Korps range. So I think I’m sold on IG... I could even model them into my Tau army as human auxiliary troops... well... if Warren and Andy will ever let me away from my workstation.
OK... back to the Sabre Defence Platforms. I don’t know how feasible these would be in a game, but if you’re playing something scenario based I think they would be a real visual treat protecting an emplacement and with five in the range there are plenty of options:
Have a wee look at them and let us know what you think?
I like these a lot, in fact you could make your very own John Rambo if you used a Catachan Jungle Fighter on the Heavy Stubber (or on second thoughts maybe not).

In my mind Cadians are like the Ultramarines of the IG. There is something about the IG though that does appeal to me though. I think its the thought that they are only human like any of us. Realistically how many of us can relate to the 7ft genetically engineered supermen in power armour? Not many but the humble gaurdsman is exactly the same as you are I. On the subject of the sculpts, they are nice and I love the idea of a Rambo conversion.
I think your right, I like the idea they aren’t supermen too but then I’m used to it as my Fire Warriors fall down in a stiff breeze 🙂
Yeah, Cadians do sort of fit the “poster child” IG, but that’s probably because GW no longer really advertises its metal range of IG outside of maybe some Vosroyans or Steel Legion here or there in WD articles. We need a 4th War for Armageddon so we can see some new plastic IG with gas masks/e-tools/rebreathers/greatcoats/smocks/whathaveyou. Steel Legion and the Death Korps are 2 of the cooler IG regiments, imo.
I’ve actually got two of those Saber platforms, really nice pieces, even if they sometimes just go on the board as terrain!
It’s that idea of the joe blogg ‘GI’ that got me into guard too!
The reason I started IG was simply the fact that they were human.
And on the “good” side.
They I saw the MK XI Basilisk, and I fell in love.
I LOVE ARTILLERY!!!!
the defence platforms look really cool , and i’m thinking about using them for a ‘Necron version of aun’va ‘ . If you cut off the support legs and the gun ,nand used some green stuff to make it more necronish , it would look great . does anyone have any other ideas about it ?
I´m not a IG player but I have the codex and i really like them,. Most for the case of tanks, the reason their human and the awesome forge world models. To the topic of the Saber platforms. They are really cool. and i think they would make great for a Planetstrike game. What do you rest think? (sorry for bad english grammar)
I got IG just an excuse to buy a Stormblade, which is hands down my favorite 40k vehicle ever
The automatic loading and mechanical traversal capabilities of these platforms would seem to negate the need for additional crew. That said, wouldn’t mean that these would have a single wound? Or are they instead considered to be open topped vehicles?
There are actually detaild rules for the platforms in the Imperial armour volume 4. However, the rules where written for the last edition of the 40k rule book, so some rules dont fit with the new edition.
Cool, thanks for the information. Hopefully the rules don’t position them as glass cannons. Here’s hoping for an FAQ to clarify those old rules.
The rules for the sabres are effectively identical to the rules for all artillery units in the 40k rulebook, with the exception that you can’t move them, which causes problems if the crew have to fall back- there’s nothing in the IA books or the 40k rules to account for it so you’re left to run a house rule. Personally I’d take the guns as destroyed-either spiked by the crew or made easy targets- any time the crew fall back, but give the unit an option of a commissar at the same points cost, weapon options and stat line as… Read more »
its the new hostile troops which has just got me to start a new IG army. I have decided to have a highly converted FW IG army.
Those Saber defense cannons look lovely, really nice, might just buy one to paint, let alone start an IG army. And at £20.40 that’s almost affordable too 😉
I want some of these. I would replace the coward guard guy with a brave spacewolf
Yup, puny space wolves would need a whole platform to hold up their guns, not like proper marines. ZING!
haha I logged in just to thumb that up 😛
Nah Space Wolves aren’t brave, the Emperor (Blessed Be His Name) said it, “and they shall know no fear”. The whole point of courage is to overcome fear, being immune to fear just makes you a madman. Also, they pee everywhere (but they’re so cute running all over the place when we play “go fetch!” with a lasgun). Anyway I’m an IG player (just because I love infantry, I don’t even like tanks, most of the time I just field tons and tons of dudes and watch em get torn appart with an evil smile) and I love those models… Read more »
I love Forge World’s Imperial Guard stuff, especially the Death Korps of Krieg units. I just wish they had more Catachan stuff, the only thing they have for them are Chaos conversions (which look nice btw).
@defendedbeef Oh I know, the Death Korps are just sick; terribly expensive though. Plus, I’d never paint them for fear of screwing it up…
yeah the common consensus seems to be everyone likes death korps and (fewer but still a lot) the steel legion. Next IG codex should definitely have them in plastic, but FW makes a lot from death korps so it might not happen…
Forge world got me started on a death korps army. Wanted something different to the tau firing line, so have built a list of tanks [no sponsons, so can move up], arty to pound the s**t out of the enemy cc units. And then a hades and engineer unit to get inclose fast. Gas grenade and shotgun them up…
Slow to make up and fragile. Resin is not plastic…
But the results are amazing. Hope to post some photos soon.
Come Llyod pickup the tank baton, whilst John is at the learnsitute!
I too have thought about starting a Guard Army. I espeacially like the death korps of kreig. I would have a WW1 style army full of Heavy bolter nests. Mortor Squads, Massive artillary and loads and loads troops to run forward and catch bullets.
but then I look over to my Large collection of Tau..and say Nah! With the money I would rather get a Heavy Rail gun Tiger shark super heavy flyer! yeah 🙂
Tiger Shark mmmmmm
Would just love one those babies.
If I was a Tau player, had enough money and space i my room, i would buy the Manta. Just look at all that fire power!
In my opinion, they need to commission Kev White to sculpt a load of Female Cadians ( Or any other Femaile Imp Guard.
I’d spend sooooo much money with Forge World if they did.
Note to self, don’t try and spell when you’ve got a meigraine.
